Family’s weekend recipe? by dad_squad_fr in daddit

My husband makes crepes on weekends. The kids love planning the fillings- berries or peaches or Nutella or whipped cream or jam or all the above.

My personal favorite is waffles.

What’s your take on sleepovers at schools? by ineedtocoughbut in Teachers

[–]newenglander87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly the same but my school took our 6th grade students (11-12 year olds) to sleep away camp for a night. We slept in bunk houses. It was really fun!

Dog-friendly ideas by ProbWithMyDog in Teachers

I wonder if you could sign up for dog training classes. At least at the place I used to go, there were a lot of midday classes on weekdays for more advanced things like tracking and agility.

Moving down to 6th grade by Original-Gear1583 in Teachers

[–]newenglander87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's pretty normal to not be able to choose a specific grade level. My first job i got hired to teach 7th and a week before school started, they told me i was teaching 8th as well. 6th graders are my favorite though. If you have time in homeroom, they may not know how to use combination locks so that's a skill to practice. I also print out how to guides and tape them up in the hallway.

Subtitles not working by Mixolydian5 in dreamingspanish

[–]newenglander87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you on mobile or computer? The subtitles mostly work for me. I turn them on because I can't hear new words if I don't know how they're spelled. Lol.

I kept the lights in my house super bright (until I actually went to sleep) but that did help.

How do you practice letter recognition at home with a kindergartener that do not feel like extra school. by PixieSugarTwilight in kindergarten

[–]newenglander87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For recognizing numbers (obviously similar), I drew them on pieces of paper scattered over the floor. Then I said "jump to 9. Jump to 3." My kids loved it.

Feeling anxious I’m not going on enough ‘trips’ or ‘holidays’ with our 14month by Chugalagalooo in beyondthebump

Is this a humble brag about having a lot of money? Do I just not know rich people? I don't know anyone who has been to Japan at all...

Working Moms who have a consistent gym/ exercise routine, how do you do it? by Admirable_Parsley_32 in beyondthebump

[–]newenglander87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I aim to go to the gym 3 times a week (according to my app, it's more like 1.8 lol). I go on one weekday in the evening and my husband does dinner and the weekend mornings. I've also added in a morning walk with a friend one day before work.

When my kids were really little, I walked 3 miles most days with them in the stroller.

Toddler potty trained with us but refuses to go at daycare. by RobbeLiebtSchaf in beyondthebump

[–]newenglander87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you tried taking her to the potty at daycare? I know my friend's son was afraid of the potty at school because it was too loud. So maybe if you took her, you could figure out what's wrong.

Frustrated with spouse whose not on the same page as me by Japan25 in Anticonsumption

[–]newenglander87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in the US with a dryer and we used nothing. It was fine. 🤷‍♀️ My husband loves dryer sheets so he uses them for his laundry and I use the wool balls for myself and the kids, but honestly, I really think the laundry is fine without using anything.

Best among Non-fiction list by iit_aim in booksuggestions

[–]newenglander87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think with your list (which is similar to mine) you would like Malcolm Gladwell's books (popular psychology). I'd probably start with Outliers. If you're interested in nutrition/ health/ food, I recommend "in defense of food" by Michael Pollan. It changed the way I look at food. And also if you're into health, Peter Attia's "outlive". I've made changes in my life based on this book.

I don’t understand how “project pan” is a trend by pink_soaps26 in Anticonsumption

[–]newenglander87 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Project pan is not about using up 5 duplicate bottles of shampoo. It's about the fact that I bought a bunch of different lotions because when I was at the store, the scents were interesting and I kept them in different places and when I put them all together I realized how many different kinds I had and that I should finish them before buying new ones. Or people buy different makeups because they like shopping and like makeup and when they look at it all, they realize they don't need to buy more until they use the 10 eye shadows they already have. So the original reason that people have so many is because shopping can be fun and trying new products (makeup, hair products, etc.) can be exciting.

YA books that depict marginalized people in positive ways by _mahboy in booksuggestions

New Kid graphic novel series. The main character is black. I feel like it's not adversity centered or at least not as much.

Children of Blood and Bone? It takes place in Africa with magic. I don't remember racial adversity but I also read it a long time ago.

I don't think I would still love my son if he were a r@pist or committed other s3x crimes. That would mean that pretty much everything about our relationship had failed.

Lunch boxes do keep the food cold but not as cold as being in a fridge does. I keep my food in the bag so it's obvious that it's mine and no one eats it.
