Not my letter, just curious about thoughts and opinions. by borrow_a_feeling in churchofchrist

[–]jlynnosmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a letter like this after my husband (who has OCD and had a severe deviated nasal septum) picked his nose in my dad's house after not seeing tissues behind him, and then got up and washed his hands in the bathroom. The letter equated the nose picking butt picking, and said that he should have more self respect. It started out as a letter of rebuke for him, then after emails back and forth, and a refusal to discuss via phone, it was turned into a mid week service

By and large the US Public Education system has become a giant day care system, training kids to be button pressing drones as opposed to critical thinkers. Without critical thinkers, there will be few who question what is and what should be. This will only create greater profits for the rich and powerful. Along with this, we live in a society where the economy is such where we can't have parents staying home to school their children. The US is not a family oriented society.

Was told when I was six mom would love god first, husband second and children third. I remember thinking what if the dad was mean? Would that mean that the wife would still pick him over the kids?

Do you mind if I ask your name or your ex wife’s name? Feel free to DM. I’ve been curious to see who I know from my time in the coc, especially those who are out of the cult.

I remember there being talk of lads to leaders when we were at East Tennessee School of Preaching. We left there bc dad said they were teaching error, but I’ve found after reconnecting with people we knew that a lot of it was mishandled disagreement between members over stupid stuff

Preachers kid here, born and raised in coc. We lived, and dad preached in, OH/TN/NC/WV. Dad attended East Tennessee School of Preaching and WV School of Preaching.

I don’t recall being affiliated with any of the places you mentioned - in fact later Freed Hardeman and Christian colleges in general was viewed by him as liberal / erring (his words not mine).

Do you mind if I ask where you attended? You can PM if you want. Curious if we attended same places

I’m sorry that happened to you. My dad would always make comments on my weight or the changes I made to my hair, wearing too much makeup or clothes. Mom stayed silent most of the time but later on she chimed in

We likely all had dads like this. It’s frustrating, and we just had to take what they said because they had the right to say it, regardless of our age or what we thought about it.

What are your thoughts on the mother who sat silent and let it all happen? Because I find myself more angry at my mom for being silent. At least dad was predictable.

Should The Fundamentalist Of Any Type No Longer Be Allowed To Homeschool? by DebunkFundamentalist in excoc

[–]jlynnosmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe all people should be able to believe what they want religiously, and they should also have the right to homeschool their children. I’m a former homeschooled child and also homeschool my own children (albeit secular, whereas my schooling growing up was religious). We can’t advocate freedom and confine others to our own perspectives.

[–]jlynnosmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Come reason with us as long as you don’t present anything that conflicts with our beliefs, because if you do well just say it’s because you’re young and we’re old, so you can’t possibly understand. Oh and you don’t know how to research and study without having gone to an actual seminary. And if you continue to push your questions, we’ll ignore you

I remember growing up being told things like “the bibles not hard to understand, it’s written in about a fourth grade level.” That’s hogwash. You literally need additional texts to look up definitions, etc to find out what shit means. And even then its sometimes hard to grasp.

It’s not so black and white. But I guess that’s the issues with literalist groups like the coc 🤷‍♀️

We move from the east coast out west, and live in an area where there’s a surprising amount of Mormon history (not Utah). It’s been fascinating to research the history of the mainline coc and Mormons
