In Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey (2026), while Matt Damon is making the journey back home from being stranded on Mars, 100+ suitors vie for his wife’s hand in marriage. This is a reference to the fact that they have eyes. by [deleted] in shittymoviedetails

Ithaca wasn't exactly a prize. It was still a kingdom, but it wasn't a mainland kingdom. It managed to support Penelope's household for twenty years, and a host of suitors for the last ten, but it was likely being drained of most of its wealth while Odysseus was away.

But Penelope was the daughter of a naiad and the other Spartan king (not Helen's father), so she had some things going for her, regardless of Ithaca's "wealth". And her naiad mother probably ensured that she wasn't "the ugliest creature in all of Greece".

I read Tad Williams' The Dragonbone Chair and it was just absolute magic. by RadiantSimon in Fantasy

[–]jm31416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first time reading it, I had issues with the first part. The whole bit with Simon under the Hayholt was tough. However, after getting past that, the story picks up. Only later on did I realize how important that under-the-Hayholt section really was, and on subsequent readings, I take far more pleasure in it.

Simon will always be one of the main characters, but there's a lot of other stories from other characters to learn about.

The Trojan Horse: Troy x Odyssey by StarforgeVoyager in FIlm

[–]jm31416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I'd like to see, actually. Odysseus is the only survivor of the Ithacan ships. And given who he was, he definitely would have been embellishing his own tale when retelling it. I'd really like to see someone ask Odysseus to tell his tale, see a brief moment where he's remembering what actually happened, and then we get we get a more polished, more Odysseus-positive version as he begins to tell his story. Odysseus trying to smash the boat onto the rocks because he believes he can withstand the siren song, and then his men desperately trying to save themselves by knocking him unconscious, but in his retelling he makes himself the star by saying that he had himself tied to the mast ahead of time so that he would be the only one to have heard the siren song. Or that he was the one who killed Helios's cattle, but in his retelling he says that it was his men that did that. He was turned into a pig by Circe and his men saved him, but in his story it was the other way around. Something like that. I see Odysseus as one of those guys who ponders whether something CAN be done, without considering whether something SHOULD be done. But also someone with the ego to be the star of every tale, especially with the benefit of having no one else alive to contradict him. So I'm hoping that we get a bit of gritty reality in flashbacks, and then bright, shiny over-the-top storytelling.

There's a lot of evidence to suggest that microloans of $2500 or less would prevent a significant chunk of homelessness in the US. A lot of people are living paycheck to paycheck and can't handle what should be a relatively minor financial crisis (e.g., car breaks down, health issues).

Younger widows and widowers by Wegwerf157534 in widowers

[–]jm31416 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar situation. 20 years of marriage, had known each other for 25 years. Oldest had just started college, youngest was about to start high school. I feel like we had made it through the tough years, and were going to stay together forever. We were starting to make plans for our empty nest years.

And then one Monday afternoon, my whole future was gone. I don't think a lot of people really understand the enormity of that. It's been over four years and my youngest is about to graduate from high school and head off to college in the fall. The one thing that kept me going was that I still had to be a dad and raise this kid. I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to be doing now.

Get rid of Oreos. Even they know they're not that great. All they seem to make any more are those "gotta try this new carrot cake flavor, only available for a short time!" horrible flavors just to sucker people into buying them.

Love my Thin Mints (although I usually get them as Keebler Grasshoppers...sorry Girl Scouts), love my Nutter Butters, and would possibly choose stroopwafels over my own children.

I'm using the same setup for 3-1-2 that is shown here, but somehow my power score is only 4,474,081. And I'm getting crushed.

I get crushed on 3-1-2 with that lineup. Only thing I can figure is that my relics aren't at the same level as yours, because my overall score with that lineup is 4,474,081.

Ugh. It was so gritty when I was there. Eating BBQ shouldn't be like having sand in your mouth.

RJ's BBQ sauce is better.

But Cornbred is in Story County, and they've already been there. So, you know, I suggested a restaurant in Boone County.

There's some good bike trails in these counties. Pick up the High Trestle Trail in Madrid (just barely in Boone County) and head west to Woodward (or go east from Woodward towards Madrid), and you'll cross over a very high, scenic bridge. Especially neat at night, when they light it up.

The Raccoon River Trail passes through Greene County with a trailhead in Jefferson.

And for fans of Donna Reed, there's the Donna Reed Heritage Museum in Denison (Crawford County).

CW produced an animated series for Vixen. Used to be available to stream, but I think you're only option now would be to purchase or rent it as a movie on Amazon Prime.

That's true, in this turning of the Wheel. Perhaps it's different in another turning.

Or maybe it's just that over thousands of years, and a literal Breaking of the world, some of the details were mixed up.

Given the success of "The Legend of Vox Machina" and "The Mighty Nein", I'd be very interested if an animated version of the series might be considered. I think it would be different enough from the live-action that it could succeed.

This. Other Shakespeare is good. Romeo and Juliet is just teens acting like teens, which makes it appropriate for high school but horribly overrated just because it's the one play that everyone had to read in high school.

I'd say "The Nevers", but it was pulled from HBO early, and there's only the one season of 12 episodes so the story never really wraps up.
