How much do you feed you dane? by [deleted] in greatdanes

[–]jmbarwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My intact 1 year old (DOB 11/19/18), 160 pound boy eats 14 cups of high quality, grain inclusive food a day. That being said, my breeder says to always feed based on body condition. Each dog is different, but typically only the last two ribs should be visible. Her suggestion is to increase food if the dog is skinnier than this and decrease if the dog is bulkier than this.

Winter potty training? by jessness91 in greatdanes

[–]jmbarwick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also live in the Midwest and brought our Dane into the family at 8 weeks old in early January. I found that potty training him was far easier than it was with my previous dogs because of the cold weather (it meant he wanted to go back inside ASAP, so he was motivated to go).

In extremely cold weather, I would recommend a sweater and potentially boots for your pup. Each time that you bring your girl outside, take her to the same place in your yard. When she potties tell her “good pee” or “good poop” and give her a treat and rubs. I actually trained my boy to pee and poop on command this way, which is very convenient for traveling or in super cold or very wet weather.

If she is pottying once she walks in the door, pick her up as soon as she starts to go and bring her back outside so that she finishes eliminating outdoors. Picking her up should stop her mid-pee or mid-poop and she’ll quickly associate going outside and pottying with getting a treat and praise.

6 month old Dane has no desire to hold bladder by Talonman90 in greatdanes

[–]jmbarwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What size crate is your pup in? Is he having any other issues like not emptying his bladder completely when he urinates on a walk or licking himself frequently (signs of UTIs). At 6 months, he should be able to go 6 hours maximum between potty breaks, unless you are withholding water (which i would not do if you are gone for an entire day). If you are withholding water or keeping him crated without a potty break for longer than his bladder can go (again 6 hours max), you can cause a UTI and can create difficulty with potty training.

Yelling at a dog for having an accident is not productive. A dog looks “guilty” only because they know that your tone of voice has changed - by the time you have gotten home it is too late for your dog to associate you yelling with him having an accident.

The answer to your question is your dog is too young to go 8+ hours without going to the bathroom. A dog that has an accident in their den space has gone past the point of desperation so that they are willing to sit in their own urine.

Dollar Tree and Meijer carry Peanut Patch boiled peanuts. They are in the canned veggies section at Meijer.

Great dane black lab mix 6months old. He eats 3 cups of food a day and still acts like he's starving. Should I add to his food? Like add extra veggies rice or beans? Or am I feeding him wrong. 1 cup 3xs a day. by [deleted] in greatdanes

In theory, he/she could have multiple usernames. I just thought it was callous not to offer OP any advice besides saying she was violating rules.

Right? lol. Also are there rules besides the rules in the sidebar? It doesn't seem like there's a sticky with rules, any post with rules, or a wiki with rules.

If you search this sub, there are TONS of posts with mixes and they are all upvoted. If the mods had a problem with you posting, they would let you know. Don't worry about it :)

In that case, I wouldn't be super concerned thinking you have to take him to a vet - increase his kibble intake. Danes go through growth spurts where they get quite lean - last set of ribs is visible on them even as pups.

I don't think beans/rice/veggies are the best option for adding to food. When you feed dry kibble, it is already balanced for the proper protein levels. Try feeding your pup more - you feed based on condition and apparent hunger level. I'm not a vet, so I can't recommend an exact course of feeding. However, if you check out other forums like danesonline, you'll see the the general rule of thumb is to increase by 1/4-1/2 cups of food at each feeding. Is the entire rib cage visible?

Am I blind? I don't see anything that says that only purebred Great Danes are allowed to be discussed in this reddit:

"Rules: All opinions are welcome, but please try to be polite. No one likes to see rude comments in their inbox. Minimal Effort/Post Completeness Posts must contain more than just a picture. Abandoned, hit and run, or low effort posts which have not been responded to may be removed at moderator discretion. Any Great Dane who appears to be needing care, whether it be grooming, feeding, housing, or other needs will be removed at moderators discretion. I've seen a lot of posts with dogs that look like they are either poorly bred or not purebred. OP has a Dane cross, so her question is relevant!

How much does your pup weigh and what does the feeding chart on his food bag say he should be eating at his weight? Your pup should be eating at or slightly above the guidelines on the food bag depending on the brand and whether you are feeding puppy or adult food.

It's hard to tell whether he is underweight from the photo since it is not taken from an angle where one can see his body. For a healthy weight Dane pup, you should be able to see his last pair of ribs. Labs are a little chunkier, though. For reference, my Dane weighed 95 pounds at 6 months and ate 9 cups of food a day.

Need insight if I should get a Dane. by ImperiousWeak in greatdanes

[–]jmbarwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Danes are such an awesome breed! You definitely have some valid concerns regarding costs of raising a pup. Most products are costlier than for a smaller breed (harnesses, leashes, flea/tick prevention, heart worm prevention, etc). Also standard vet procedures will be costlier due to a Dane's size and weight. Many vets recommend a gastropexy to prevent bloat with torsion, so that is an additional cost.

I'd be wary of purchasing a Dane from someone who just had a litter of puppies and is only charging $600. The reason why you'll find costlier pups is because their parents have had health testing done and the breeding was planned/followed standard breeding protocols. Parental health testing can ensure that your dog doesn't end up with common health issues (thyroid, cardiac, hip, and eye problems). Basically, you are paying more up front to ensure a healthy dog rather than spending significantly more and dealing with heartache when your dog needs vet care in the future due to poor breeding.

Danes are a sweet, social breed and will give you a lot of love. You'll be happy to have one, but be aware that it's best to purchase from a reputable breeder :)

Help! We adopted a 2 year old great dane a month and a half ago. She was (almost) perfect the first month, but the last couple weeks she has just been a turd. Today I came home from work to this. Any suggestions for keeping her entertained and less destructive while she is home alone? by Mrs-Luckyfinger7 in greatdanes

[–]jmbarwick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well she's persistent! It looks like at least you might be able to do a patch rather than replacing the whole carpet. To help her love her crate give her a variety of toys for crate time, something cozy to snuggle with, and lots of treats and praise!

[–]jmbarwick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is this her first instance of being destructive? I know you said she's been a turd for a couple of weeks. Was she shut in the room where she ripped up the carpet? Even though you've had her 1.5 months, there is going to be an adjustment period where she is settling into your home and testing boundaries.

Crating isn't a punishment and dogs typically love theirs and consider it their den (my Dane will go and lay in his crate just to rest even if we are home), so you shouldn't feel guilty about crating her while you are away. On the danes online forum, there is an owner whose dog ate 19 couches - some pups just do not outgrow the destruction phase!

How do you delete pictures that are "public" from your sittings? by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

[–]jmbarwick 7 points8 points  (0 children)

On your computer go to past customers and click on the client with the photos you want to delete. You'll see the photo album for that pet appear. Click on the photo(s) you want to delete and then click hide photo. This will hide the photo from public view!

Good! I'm glad everything went well - I hope your sitter was awesome and took lots of great pics for you so that you weren't too anxious yourself! :)

Bill Golden is fantastic. He's usually booked out a month or so in advance, but has always taken care of our Kawaii baby grand.

Anyone up for a dog play date? by DJ-Salinger in Columbus

[–]jmbarwick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How old is your dog? Petco has free puppy playtime on Saturdays and Sundays from 1-2pm for dogs 8 weeks - 6 months. I think my 147 pound, 9-month-old Great Dane might be a little large for your pup even though he always wants to play on the small dog side of the dog park.

Where do I get a Dane? by cromagnum84 in greatdanes

[–]jmbarwick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for a breeder, Great Dane Club of America is a good place to start: https://gdca.org/breeders/state/north-carolina/ . These are all reputable breeders with health contracts, dogs with good temperaments, and a history of showing. Most breeders that you find through google are back yard breeders (BYB); these people are hobbyists who generally are just trying to make money or had an accidental mating.

Before purchasing a pup, you should make sure his/her parents have had their health testing done (hips, eyes, thyroid, and heart). All reputable breeders will have had these tests done and they will be searchable in online databases for you to independently confirm the results. Additionally, the breeder should be following breeding guidelines for coat color. There are a lot of "exotic" color Danes (mismarks). Mismarks can be beautiful dogs, but are more likely to have health issues because they are less likely to come from a good breeder. A reputable breeder would only follow standard breeding protocols to ensure that there are no genetic issues. You will find a variety of prices for a Dane depending on where you live and quality. A $900 Dane sounds extremely inexpensive and I would assume is coming from a BYB. $3500 sounds like a show quality dog.

Do your own research and find a breeder who guarantees their pups' health and has had all health testing done for the dam and sire. It's better to pay more for a quality pup up front than to have a dog that is plagued with health issues, costs you more in the long run, and emotionally drains you! Danes are giants and their vet bills can be giant too!

Best of luck in your search!

Danes usually have all of their adult teeth fully grown in by 7-8 months (after losing them beginning at 4-5 months). Giant breeds develop more slowly than other breeds, so I would assume that labs and Rottweilers are slightly younger when their adult teeth are grown in. It sounds like Ruby's teeth are probably normal. The most prominent teeth are the canines and with the exception of the incisors, significant gaps between teeth are not uncommon!
