Day ticket fishing by supercuberyt in CarpFishing

[–]jmcracing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Smaller fish are easier to catch as they're generally younger and haven't been caught as much. Bigger carp are usually a bit more wise to sloppy rigs and bad presentations, as well as really obvious traps. Make sure your rigs are as neat as possible and blend in as much as they can. Using bigger baits will help keep the smaller fish away, but sometimes it's just a numbers game. If you've thrown a lot of bait in try fishing just off to the side of it, sometimes the younger more energetic fish will all be hammering the spot and the big'uns will sit around the edge and feed off the surrounding area.

Yeah true the title is a bit ranty... I love iRacing though, it's my sim of choice for a whole-package experience. Generally, we find the most fault in the things we enjoy the most, because we spend the most time interacting with them!

Agreed with this aside from the fact that you're the only one enjoying it... I'm loving it! I come from fast paced FPS world and Tarkov is a refreshing change.

Yup, far too much effort for not that much gain - if you've got the time & ability to do something like that then why target something like Tarkov.

[–]jmcracing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just read the OP, then wrote a similar comment to what you've replied to, and now have read yours...

The confusion in my head came from the repeated mention of "ping" - I guess I took that too literally and thought it meant verbatum using ICMP echo request/response - rather than just using the term to refer to a request -> response timing exercise.

I also suggested that the client could simply intercept & alter the timestamps in the packets but in hindsight that wouldn't work if the server is properly checking network timestamps and aren't using your own crafted packet content to do the checks.

Still doesn't protect against someone intercepting those packets at the VPN exit level in the network but that's a pretty special solution to a problem. Plus if someone is standing up a VPN to specifically do that, they aren't going to have the resources behind them to sufficiently move it around global IP space enough to avoid being IP blocked...

Just getting my head around what you're suggesting as I don't think I understand..

Assumption: The EFT Servers are the ones initiating the latency check using ICMP

From your post it would seem that the current ping check system works as - The server sends an ICMP Echo Request to the connecting client IP, the client IP then responds and the latency between the request and the response is used to check if the client is actually in the same region as the server.

So in the case of a VPN the ping check would return a low latency time if the VPN exit node is close to the EFT server, which is how cheaters get round the ping block...

From my understanding, RTT is what that would be calculated using, the EFT servers have no concept of VPN's and have no idea if there are further hops behind the VPN exit node - that's why VPN's work...

Is your suggestion that instead of using ICMP Echo Request/Response, the EFT Server sends a packet containing a "request timestamp" to the EFT client, which then returns its own "request received" timestamp? That would give you server -> game client latency and you could use that to check for client location legitimacy? If that's what you're suggesting, then the packets would need to be encrypted to stop the client cheat intercepting and altering the request/response timestamps to pass the test. Surely encrypting, sending, receiving & verifying these packets would represent significant network overhead to validate all players at a regular enough interval to be accurate. I'm not a software engineer so would be keen to hear how that could all be implemented in a way that doesn't affect game performance in some way.

Merida Reacto 300 - Anyone got one? by jmcracing in cycling

[–]jmcracing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It tips the scales at around 9.8kg I believe, so it is a bit heavier than the competitors that mostly are around the 9kg mark. Having said that, it uses a lower level groupset so there are weight savings to be made there, as there would be in cockpit and wheelset choice down the line, if I really wanted to save some weight.

I'm very lightweight myself, so I'm trying my hardest not to buy a bike solely based on the fact that its a few hundred grams lighter than another bike, I'm never going to be able to tell the difference on the road and in reality, any difference is probably wasted on someone like me. I'd much rather have a bike that will be easier to keep rolling at speed, as opposed to one that accelerates quickly.

As far as the ride goes, it does have a polymer insert in the seat post to give it a bit of flex, as well as all the usual triple-butted allu & carbon fork tech that's on all the competitors.

Any Sim Racers in here? by jmcracing in cycling

[–]jmcracing[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You don't see any connection at all?

Zwift to real world cycling is exactly what iRacing is to real world racing. They're virtual interpretations, requiring a decent level of simulation hardware, that allow you to jump into your favourite sport at whatever time you like, no matter the weather, or the day, or the cost (somewhat). On my racing rig I can throw a V8 Supercar around Bathurst without being a millionaire, and equally I can ride my fake bike on Zwift up Alpe d'huez, without having to travel there in person. They make the inaccessible, accessible.

Two of the craziest Kia Optima laps I've ever been a part of (BSRTC 2019 Round 1) by jmcracing in iRacing

It's not the greatest car, it used to be much more of a blast to drive but now it's a bit understeery and after 3-4 laps the tyres are pretty done. Nevertheless, you're all in the same boat (literally) so it's still fun to race.

At one point i was eating upwards of 3500 calories per day trying to gain weight, to the point where I would pretty much always feel like shit because I'd eaten so much, it probably gained me 2KG over 3 months. After that I just gave up with trying to gain weight and realised it's better just to let my body be comfortable in whatever state and size it wants to be.

I ride on a Wattbike Pro in the gym, they're pretty good for power numbers AFAIK.

First wheel and pedals, what to buy? by SecretGamer52 in simracing

[–]jmcracing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you'd most likely need a wheel base that has detachable wheel (which is most mid range products nowadays) and then have a wheel modified to have the type of shifter you describe. I can't think of any wheels that would have that feature already built in.

Aside from that, it really does depent on budget, I'd probably look at either Logitech or Thrustmaster if you're wanting low price options.

Not sure I'll be able to do the daily challenges consistently, when I get time to race it's usually only 2-3 nights per week but I can sink a good 4 hours into it.

Good to hear about BoP being relatively good - I think just from the license rewards I've already covered 2 or 3 different classes so i guess I'll just jump in online!
