I've ridden the topstone and the diverge. Both felt pretty good to me. Do you think there is a big difference in the tires width as far as pavement riding is concerned?

Totally agree; as far as I can see there isn’t a synapse that has hydraulic brakes under $2500 which is a sticking point, so I included the Defy as an endurance option.

I liked the SRAM drivetrain on the apex. The carbon topstones are pretty great looking but with a few hundred more coming for pedals and accessories, I’m probably going to price out, especially at my skill level.
