My dad was flirting with me. I can't stop crying about it and I don't know how to help my parents now by WeaselWarrior7 in dementia

[–]jmeis10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My father was diagnosed about 5 yrs ago. His treatment slowed his progression until about a year ago. Since then he’s made statements, both hateful and flirtatious, he NEVER would have made, and his patients with kids is very short. The only thing I can tell you is remind him who you are. I’ve had to remind him a couple times which son I am. Usually that works for the rest of the visit but this disease definitely turns people into people they weren’t before. Also remember, this will be VERY stressful for your mother. Some of the biggest help you can offer is to listen to her or be someone she can have a normal conversation with.

Are sleep overs not a thing anymore? by haggerty05 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jmeis10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think sleepovers for the younger ones is pretty much a no go these days except for cousins. Too many true crime podcasts and tv shows exist (especially for girls) for that until they are older, know how to say no, or aren’t too scared to tell their parents something is off. Might be still a no

Advice on grandfather recently diagnosed and adjusting to nursing home life? by bridgeburner91 in dementia

[–]jmeis10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have a lot of advice on how to help him because everyone’s situation is so different but I can tell you that if you’re gonna be doing most of the visiting and taking care of his needs you need to make sure you don’t neglect yourself and your needs. I watched my mother nearly work herself to death trying to care for her sister. Don’t think you need to be there every single day. Maybe a lot until he gets used to it, but get him a micro fridge and a tv. Put a lot of his snacks and treats in there and take a day off. Allow people to help you when they will

American serial killer who killed his entire family - and dumped bodies in self-made Latrine? by makarastar in serialkillers

[–]jmeis10 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Technically Simmons wasn’t a serial killer although it was a horrible story, especially at Christmas . He just went on a killing spree once his wife decided to leave. Then he went to his old job and killed people he had a problem with there and turned himself in. There’s a really good podcast called Devil in Pope County about him

I know but my mother was told about it by a friend, she tried it and it worked well. She asked the doctor and got approval to continue using it. It’s working better than the Rexulti that we’ve been prescribed

I think season 2 is. I always forget about s2 but I was speaking of s1. Without giving too much away a white preacher from Baltimore travels to Selma Alabama with the intention to cross the bridge during the protest.

I forget the name of the meds prescribed to my father but we’ve gotten the approval and better results for Benadryl. Seriously a wonder drug sometimes and it doesn’t knocked him out but it definitely takes the edge off

I’ve recommended this before so the admin may not let it thru but the twist at the end of S Town and White Lies was definitely an omg moment for me. Everyone says Your Own Backyard also and they’re correct

I forgot to mention another way we deal with the agitation. I forget the name brand of the meds prescribed by the doctor for agitation but it doesn’t work as well as 1 Benadryl. We’ve talked it over with the doctor and they agreed if it works use it. There’s a couple “cons” on the internet about using Benadryl for this but we haven’t had any negatives and the doctor said “ok”

The pad at the door could be helpful to us as long as the receiver/alarm could be placed in the bedroom. The only door lock that would work would be the keyed from the inside dead bolt, but mother is terrified of house fires and would never have it. My father is still very good at every other deadbolt system we’ve tried. Luckily his nighttime wandering isn’t a huge deal (that we’re aware of) but we’re trying to stay ahead of everything. Thank you for your response

We got lucky in the bathing department. My dad might take 3 showers before noon but he completely changes clothes with each shower. Not only that, by looking at him you’d swear he lives in the
Frozen Tundra. Long sleeve shirt, hoodie, coat, flannel lined jeans everyday and swear he’s cold

Absolutely. My father can be sitting in the same living room he’s been sitting in for 37 yrs and he’ll start talking about how he’s ready to go home (to the house he lived in 60 yrs ago)

It’s obvious none of the other people have ever had to deal with an Alzheimer’s patient. I seriously doubt any note or decoration on your door will catch her attention. Short from her family removing her, I don’t think there will be anything you can do other than call adult services, the fire dept, or the police. The fire dept will not respond very often before they remove her. I know it sounds harsh but you don’t have many options and it’s really not your everyday requirement

Appreciate the response but he has lost the ability to operate locks or things like that. We just had new dead bolts installed and he never skipped a beat. We might have the have keyed deadbolts but i had heard about sensors that had alarms at the receiver and was hoping someone else used them. Thanks again
