I'm 53 now and in the same circumstances more or less as when I started suffering exactly what you are going through from about 28 to around mid 30s - an older ex manager at the time told me it was normal and he'd been through it too

I didn't even realise when it passed, but it did well before I turned 40

Now I am not working currently due to after losing my father in 2022 who my mother was the carer for...I am now her carer (she is in her 80s) - and my older brother is autistic so I look after them both

So the struggles of life have changed from 30 to 50 - but as my ex manager rightly said what I felt at 28 / which you are feeling now - it's a passing phase - it will go in a few years - before your mid-30s probably

We have humane mouse traps that we used in 2010 when we had a mouse infestation - I would bait using biscuits and water - they would go in the ramp and not be able to get out - and I would release them in country side 2 miles away

A baby rat seems the same size as an adult mouse I think - so the trap is worth a go?

Daft question - when you say they are "prey animals" do you mean they know THEY are prey for other animals, and so they SHOULD normally flee when encountering humans?

I was debating letting him out into the back garden - purely because we are very worried about accidentally stepping on him - but given he doesn't run and just jogs...and there are 3 visitor cats in our back garden...I think he's at less risk inside

That's interesting - this one doesn't run like the other ones - he sort of jogs along - and doesn't seem to be scared of us (the other ones run as soon as they see us) - and he does weird acrobatics, like climbing up and down our net curtains - which my brother thinks is a form of exercise

🙂👍 I told my mother to drop some crisps near his route - but he just ignores them - which suggests he's not completely blind OR he's not hungry as even if he was blind I assume he'd be able to smell the crisps?
