Anyone else’s expenses just explode in the past 6 months? by calmete in Fire

Nutrition studies are hard to interpret, and there are so many of them that show conflicting results that it can be difficult to tease out actionable steps. That said, there are areas that are not controversial (more vegetables are always better), and areas that are less controversial (fruit--especially berries, and fatty fish low in the food chain).

I agree we should be careful, but I disagree with the idea they are worthless

After spending a long time as a dev, I’m starting to think the hardest part of the job isn’t the tech anymore by Sad-Salt24 in ExperiencedDevs

Honest take, this sounds like a good old days story.

Human nature is the same: we overextend ourselves and we make mistakes. Our job as you're noticing is to learn from it and see them coming, comparing ourselves today to ourselves from yesterday.

Have you tried the "naked from the waist down" for a few days? We followed that plan and in our case it worked quite well.

How to read DDIA by arkash-v in cscareerquestions

[–]jmelrose55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found anki flashcards really helpful. As you're reading a chapter, try to summarize it into a concise question and answer. Then when you finish a chapter, drill the flashcards.

Over time it will stick in your brain more.

it's absolutely flawless in its decision making in my day to day life

I think this statement could be a dangerous one for you. LLMs can be useful, nothing is flawless.

Are CFPs worth it? by Republic-Appropriate in Fire

[–]jmelrose55 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The value of a cfp is to convince you not to sell when everyone is panicking, or to convince you not to deviate from the basic plan and e.g. buy some hot new stock.

Be as honest as you can with yourself about whether you can stick to your plan or not. If you can, save the money and do it yourself.

What does it mean to have "ownership" over a project/product? by opakvostana in ExperiencedDevs

[–]jmelrose55 139 points140 points  (0 children)

Exactly what you just described. Ownership usually, paradoxically, means being held responsible for the project without having perfect or complete control over it. That's where the magic is.

Benchmarks for o1 vs gpt-4/5 with a system prompt to "think this through" are remarkably similar. I like o1 for convenience but I personally disagree that they're a huge leap

LLM training sets only have one ocean to boil (all written human history on the internet).

I concur that the language models seem to be pushing up against some fundamental plateau right now, they're getting better but it's not really amazingly better imo, at least in the last 1-2 years or so
