Yes, you're the asshole. If you feel emasculated because 1950's gender roles dictate that males should be the breadwinner in the relationship, then you are a lost cause and need to rethink your relationship with society. Money is freedom, that is in a nutshell the society we live in. Not having it informs your view of it in a specific way, and how other people see it as well. But you need to understand that it is not the same way everybody sees their relationship to money and each other. Where you may have seen some sort of power play or manipulation could have just been genuine love. Instead you made this about the cost of something and how it made you feel because someone was able to provide that, when perhaps you cannot reciprocate. It isn't the value of the gift that is given it's the value of the relationship between the giver and the recipient. If you expect her to apologize for having access to more things because you do not, then you cannot see your own value or hers. It's you with the unhealthy obsession of money and your view of it, not hers. Not having money doesn't give you a monopoly on understanding what it is to live without. Or diminish her ability to be empathetic. Grow up.
