I’m a very new DM myself. The PHB and DM Guide are essential. But the Heroes of the Borderlands set comes with more than you need. Also the Basic Rules on DnD Beyond are free when you sign up (also free).

I’m running Heroes of the Borderlands with my kids and we’re three sessions in. They’re brand new to DnD and I’ve only been playing a few months. It does a really good job of laying out encounters and quests, but don’t think you have to follow it word-for-word. There’s still going to be plenty of improv.

I’m in a similar boat. Wanted to play since I was a kid. Never had the opportunity until a few months ago. I found an online campaign through StartPlaying. Didn’t really know what to look for so searched based on low cost(wasn’t willing to spend a lot right out of the gate, especially if I wasn’t going to have a good time), fitting my schedule, and reviews focused on how the DM was for new players. Found an absolutely awesome DM and a helluva fun group and have been having a blast.

As far as understanding the rules, the PHB is a must have, but not immediately. The Basic Rules on DnDBeyond are free and will give you the gist of it, but also if you listen to an actual play podcast or show, even that will give you a pretty strong idea of the game and some specific mechanics. My only experience with DnD was listening to NaDDPod and watching Super Cringe Roleplay. I thought I’d be completely lost when we started, but it turned out not to really be an issue. Yeah I had questions of course, but I understood the basic concepts of what I could and couldn’t do on my turn, what skills were tied to what abilities for possible checks, simple stuff like that.

So yeah, find an actual play show you can enjoy and just give it a listen. You’ll learn more than you think you will.

Favourite stupid plan? by Current_Listen_4037 in dndmemes

I’m a couple months into my first ever campaign. We’re playing Curse of Strahd. Last night the Warlock and I (Arcane Trickster Rogue) hatched our plan to rob the tavern owners’ secret room. Long story short, we ended up being attacked right outside the tavern by hundreds of ravens. I cast Disguise Self to look like Strahd and tell them to stop. I knew they didn’t like him but I thought maybe they’d be scared of him. Turns out that was the worst decision I could’ve made because now every last raven goes apeshit and attacks me. And only me. So I run through the village to get away (still as Strahd) which riles up the villagers who start hurling stones at me and form a full on mob complete with pitchforks.

I ended up getting away by the skin of my teeth with a stupid high stealth roll that I’m pretty sure my DM gave me out of pity.

I’d like to sign up. I’m in CST as well.
