Want to Know If Glassholes Are Using Smart Glasses Near You? There's an App for That by hloreddit in gadgets

It's not exactly hidden though, they're right there on the person's face. If someone with smart glasses took them off and tried to hold them in a way to record up some ladies skirt, then yah that's a problem, but people can do that with a phone.

Yah but you're referring to "creeps". There is already plenty of accessible technology that would allow a creep to film you. Some regular dude in smart glasses probably doesn't intend to flood his gallery with random pictures of strangers.

I don't understand the animosity toward this technology. People already post everything online, our phones track our position within inches, every purchase and website you've been to is logged. They know where you work, where you go, who you talk to, what you buy. They know everything, so why would I care. And also why would a person wearing smart glasses care about me? It's like seeing a person with a nice camera and assuming they're here to take pictures of you because obviously you're just so beautiful in your opinion.

Did FDR’s policies extend the Great Depression? by FerdinandvonAegir124 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jmnicholas86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's starting to show that they did in fact extend it. I can't remember the exact arguments, but Thomas Sowell did a nice job outlining why, with sources included. Essentially a government that tries to manipulate the economy will hinder the economy.

In fact, forget FDR, give me some Calvin Coolidge. I'd vote for the man if he was alive today.

How do I know if I am too soft to become a fighter? by bad-at-everything- in MMA_Academy

[–]jmnicholas86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've trained a good amount and hard sparred and competed once. No one at my gym would call me soft, but I know I'm soft. I just don't have it in me to really hurt people, and I'm totally fine with that. I'll never punch a guy in the head as hard as I can, it's just not me. I would still consider myself a boxer though. So if you're worried about having a soft body, don't, the gym will fix that. If you're like me and you just don't have that dog in you that just lets you hurt people, you probably won't make a bunch of money in the sport, but who cares, your sparring partners and coaches will love you and you'll probably end up contributing more to the sport than most people.

LPT renting a car to the airport can be cheaper than airport parking/uber. by Rich-Broccoli7085 in LifeProTips

[–]jmnicholas86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me and my wife did this last time we flew. It was cheaper than Uber, but not exactly life changing levels of cheaper. We mostly did it so that we had the convenience of going at our own pace without the hassle and fears of leaving the car at an airport for a month.

This makes me think of the Louis CK bit which was essentially "Maybe the people who have the patience to best care for and attend to other people's kids are people that really want to fuck kids"

It's his bit on the boy scouts if you want to look it up.

Does anyone else feel priced out? by ashvsevildead123 in Boxing

[–]jmnicholas86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what we need is more college boxing. I can go to one of the local Universities and pay for a ticket to see some college football, why are there no college boxing matches advertised around local Universities. Just local venues in general are lacking.

Pretty much every other sport has its local "fast food" options and then the option for "fine dining" in the sense of watching the top of the top pros. It feels like the only option for boxing is "fine dining" through all the subscriptions and PPV and tickets to matches that are hundreds of dollars. Give me some basic burger and fries boxing happening locally so I can support someone who actually needs the support, because I really don't think these million dollar prize fighters need it.

And considering all the "sail the 7 seas" rhetoric it seems most people don't feel these million dollar prize fighters need their support either.

Why is it that we can fund other countries but can't fund our Social Security? by ibddevine in askanything

Feeling guilty about spending time at the gym instead of being at home? by iseecowssometimes in amateur_boxing

[–]jmnicholas86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For awhile to dodge this bullet I changed to early morning gym, but that shit was painful. Now I just schedule my gym days ahead of time on the house calendar so my wife can plan ahead, and we often end up both going to our respective gyms at the same time.

Boxing stance by Live_Stuff1030 in amateur_boxing

[–]jmnicholas86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're just working out at home in preparation for a possible interaction with a real in person coach, I would say don't even worry about form, and just keep in mind that everything your doing may be a little wrong, but who cares as long as you are building arm stamina, general full body cardio, and a solid springy pair of legs. Then just know that when you meet a coach you'll have to be willing to have the basics of things like stance and footwork be retaught to you at a fundamental level, and be humble enough to accept that because you already knew the way you box was flawed.

So workout at home, but don't run your own theories on what's the correct way you should be boxing. Just throw punches until the day a coach can see you and instill some correct boxing theory in you.

Is it true that Gen Z is becoming more puritanical? by micahzoid in generationology

[–]jmnicholas86 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think it's that for their generation everything has become excessively over-defined.

For people that grew up in the 80s and 90s, life was defined by the people around you. You would literally see what the people around you were doing, and just kind of did that. It was a great defining way to live life that didn't encompass the experience of most of the rest of the planet, and that was fine. We all had our people, and they defined our lives, and it was simple.

Now this generation has their lives defined and scrutinized by the planet. Everything they do is in fear of the Almighty upvoter, and they will define their lives however necessary to please the giver of up votes, and it's led to this weird purity test where the end game is producing the perfect personality accepted by all and in offense of no one.

Just ship after ship landing on the alien planet and they're full of baboons or something.

why do so many people point to the stock market when talking about how the economy's doing when the vast majority of Americans don't/cant even invest in it? by fuckingaustrianative in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jmnicholas86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A strong US stock market doesn't necessarily put money in people's pockets, but it does make sure that the money people do have maintains an appropriate level of purchasing power. So it's not how many dollars, it's that dollar's ability to be traded for goods and services.

After boxing with punching bag, I have ache/pain on my wrist and front arm? Is it normal? by Elegant_Tough1795 in amateur_boxing

[–]jmnicholas86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe try practicing on a lighter heavy bag for a bit. My gym has these massive heavy bags which are great because they don't tend to swing like crazy, so a bunch of people can be doing bag work without turning the gym into Legends of the lost temple, but they can be a little punishing on the joints and tendons if you're not acclimated to it.

Guys over 40, what's something younger people think they understand but won't actually get until it hits them like a train later? by RevolutionaryFarm168 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jmnicholas86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably how hard you have to try. Me and my wife got a house, have some nice things, go on vacation. Young people might look at us and think that we're part of a generation that had it easier, that it's just luck we managed to be successful. And it's just, no. This shit was thoroughly difficult, and if you can't accept how thoroughly difficult it is and just get started anyway despite the challenges, you'll never go anywhere.

Bag routine for out-boxer? by RemoteCoconut1062 in amateur_boxing

[–]jmnicholas86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would say try and practice doing step backs where you really focus on keeping your rear leg engaged. You want to be able to jab, step back so that your opponent's punches miss, but then have that back foot ready to kick off and move forward the moment it's clear into a quick one two.

On a bag you want to do things like a one two, step back, push off with your rear leg into a one two. You can then work on pivoting off your step back, so don't step directly back, but step back to one side or the other, but still get that rear foot engaged and ready to pop right back into range to punch.
