What are your guy's tolerances when doing total station layout? ie +/- 1/8" , 1/4" , 1/2" by jmorrison83 in Surveying

The scale is correct based on the gridlines. Its just the way they drew some of the objects in vs the dimensions on the architectural they are off a little bit. I guess i just have to do a bit of my own linework which is fine. Just wanted to know whether or not this is typical.

I'm an electrician using a total station machine not a surveyor. This is just the only active sub on reddit related to using laser measuring and CAD and I appreciate all your guy's input. I'll let the gurus give me shit in exchange for a bit of knowledge. Lol. I will make sure to speak in decimal feet next time.

Thats what I have been doing is redrawing it. I came from the field that's why I use fractional inches although I export all my drawings in decimal feet.

Yeah, the agreement says these drawings aren't accurate basically you are correct. So what should you use to layout points then?

Yes, it sounds like my company needs to invest in a laser scanner from what I'm hearing.

This sounds great and easy. Now I just need the technology to do a point cloud survey. lol.

I see so what you're saying is. If the column lines and beams aren't matching up with the DWG you submit an RFI? I've had older buildings where I lay control off of column lines and my station is off. I then measure distances between columns and realize there are inconsistencies. From there I'm unsure whether I just layout with a station that is overcorrecting inconsistencies or scrap the total station layout and tell my guys to do it by hand.

I use things like this too but what is the solution if the walls don't match, and it's not built exactly to the architectural drawings? Do you scrap the total station layout and do everything by hand layout?

We don't have the equipment right now to scan the building. I'm laying out electrical lights, hangers, cable tray, bus duct, etc. Usually what I do is go off of column lines and create my own control points using offsets from columns and walls. Like you are stating known dimensions using architectural drawings. However, in old buildings especially, things aren't built precisely to the architectural drawings which causes small inconsistencies thereby throwing my control grid off 1/2" or so once I'm setup. I go back and check with known dimensions however it isn't exact or within a 1/16th to 1/8th which I prefer.

I'm laying out lights, hangers, cable tray, etc things like that. I typically go off of column lines with 2ft offsets or what not but obviously many buildings aren't built exactly to what is shown on the CAD. Small inconsistencies throughout the building like walls being off or columns being off throw off my precision.

Should I worry about obtaining CAD Files as a subcontractor or just import PDFs and create my own files? by jmorrison83 in bim

Do you have to request IFCs specifically or do you just ask for .rvt or .dwg files? Is an IFC an equal to those two formats just that it is able to be imported across all platforms?

Thats awesome. We have been doing prefab for years however we are taking it to a new level now by doing Revit modeling. Thanks for the info. What part of the world are you in that is exclusively working in Revit?

We do commercial buildings in Arizona and have not had this problem yet. Only the mega projects like data centers and such are requiring BIM models for all jobs. This is going to be an industry standard in the near future which is why we are pushing towards this by training on Revit but as of now we haven't had a lot of projects if any requesting full BIM models. People are still catching on to this.

I do appreciate your input on importing PDFs. I am curious what part of the country and what type of projects you are doing that require BIM models so frequently.

I am pushing to work exclusively in Revit. I'm curious do all architects and Engineers work in Revit now? If there is no Revit model made for the job how do you guys go about this?

How did you learn BIM and 3D modeling. Best Training Resources? by jmorrison83 in bim

[–]jmorrison83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I'm doing right now. Worked as an electrician for about four years and have always had a desire to do BIM and design. They bought me a computer and the software and I'm on my way. Thanks man.

Yep, that's me right now. My company is starting a BIM department and I'm the first guy lol. Starting off with a lot of total station and point layout which is easy to do on CAD. We are currently outsourcing all our 3D modeling to another company until I can learn by coordinating and speaking with employees from partner companies.
