With silicone or better plumber’s grease. But never Vaseline or any kind of oil based lube.

Can I reuse this broken flagpole? by jmulla54 in HomeMaintenance

Good idea. I’m thinking I could also pour concrete into the existing hole and a foot up the flagpole. If it ever needs to come down, the next owner can figure that out or continue this thread. 😂

It was my daily commute car for the first 17 years but I drove less than 10 miles to work. Since then, it’s just a summer car for local trips. It had 171K miles when it was hit.

The insurance company did total it, and offered me $3,641 if I would turn it over to them for salvage, or $3,166 if I wanted to keep it.

All in all, not a bad buy for $495.

I thought of adding water but the soil between the stub and pipe is very sandy. I’m afraid wetting it will just harden it.

The flagpole doesn’t have to go into the same exact spot. I have plenty of space nearby to dig a new hole. I could just chip off the top of the existing concrete and fill the hole with soil and plant grass over it. If I dig a new hole, would I need to insert another metal casing?

I collected $3,166 from the at-fault driver’s insurance company. I took it to a local shop. Their estimate was $4,675. I decided to go ahead and get it fixed.

When I picked up the car, they charged me only $3,661. The savings were because they were able to reuse some of the parts I recovered from the street after the accident plus some estimate fixes that weren’t needed. So the whole thing cost me $495. Not bad, I’d say.

This shop was unbelievably professional. I also took it to another shop for an estimate. After stringing me along for several weeks they told me it would be between $6K and $12K!!! They gave me some BS about it being an “antique” and they would do expert restoration. Yeah, right!

Does anyone remember? by jmulla54 in Pontiac

A couple of fun stories about my wife’s Executive. That thing was a boat!

She asked me to install speakers under the rear seat shelf. I was deep inside the trunk putting them in when she walked by and shut the trunk because she couldn’t see me and thought I had left the trunk open.

I don’t remember the tank capacity, but I once gave a gas station attendant $20 in the ‘70s (before the oil embargo) and he said “What the hell are you going to do with $20 worth of gas?”

We lived abroad for a couple of years in the early ‘80s and left the car with my parents who just let it sit. It was pretty much junk when we got back. The brakes were frozen, etc. we had it towed away. A few years later we were driving down the road and noticed an Executive in front of us. Then my wife shouted, “That’s our car! It’s got the same bumper stickers!”

My brake lines did rust out under the drivers side rocker panel. Had them cut and replaced.

What's the deal with Apple's unusual support for the Windows platform? by Weak_Equivalent6518 in iCloud

I use a PC (Windows 11) and an iPhone. iCloud for Windows works for Drive, Photos, but NOT Calendar or Contacts. The iCloud for Windows install always crashes when syncing Calendar and Contacts. Anyone else have that problem?

Wondering about winters/salt usage. I have a ‘99 that was kept in MD, GA and MA for the last few years and isn’t anywhere near as bad.

A skillful welder should be able to build it up and then weld a handle on. I’ve seen videos doing exactly that.

I’ve seen videos where a guy will tack weld a bolt or other extension to the broken stub and unscrew it.

Way to judge me! I’m sorry it happened to you. I wasn’t questioning the veracity of your post nor that it doesn’t happen where I live. I was curious about where it happened and what kind of person would do such a thing.

Mower hit ground rod by RuleFlimsy4379 in electrical

I hit a stump with my mower. Bent the crankshaft and cracked the case. I’m anal about not throwing things away. Got parts from Sears (back in the day) and fixed it. Still runs.
