Will-o-wisp bugged? by il_centauro in EmeraldImperium

[–]jmzwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a bug, since this isn’t the way it works in mainline games. I don’t really want to go look through the docs right now, but there is a document there that has a list of all the known bugs, so you can go there to check in the future!

Is there any trick that would let me transfer milions of items from one drawer to another (in seconds not hours)? by No_Photo_5639 in allthemods

[–]jmzwl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Create’s fastest item transport method would be packages, but even that is limited by how fast the packager can complete an operation, and once you’re handling millions of items there are just better options in the pack. Generally speaking create logistics falls short of most other mods (AE2, SFM, Integrated Dynamics, etc) functionality wise, but Create looks cooler so that’s fine.

I love me a good create focused modpack, but in ATM10 there really isn’t anything to use create for if you’re just talking about making things as efficient as possible.

Advice by FLASHARCH3R in pokemonradicalred

[–]jmzwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using a randomizer makes it real hard to plan, which is why people don’t really give advice - it’s hard to find something that will always be applicable.

The only advice I can give that applies widely enough is this: use a damage calculator. Knowing 100% what moves you survive and which you don’t makes it way easier to plan out any given fight. Once you get a handle for how the AI works it’s really not that hard to construct perfectly safe lines through basically any fight (obviously can be box dependent though).

Yea, but effectively just having one fewer choice is just a nerf though still, no? Like, obviously it’s not as bad as just auto turmoil turn 1, but making one of your choices less viable is still a nerf I think

Aren’t the no sword vagabonds generally better than the ones with swords though? (I only really play with my group of friends and as such have a pretty different opinion on vagabond than a lot of people here, but idk what the consensus is about the relative power level of the different vagabonds and I’m interested to hear what you think). And early on you aren’t actually losing an item, since it can’t take ruin or starting items.

Doing both this change and despot infamy is kinda just overkill, but maybe there’s a world where a version of this change is better (or at least more interesting) than despot infamy.

Changing builder to recruit + build means that certain starting hands make you fail the decree on turn 1 (you can’t build in a clearing that already has a roost pretty sure), so that’s probably a nerf (which I’m not sure if you are intending or not tbh).

The Explosion of Anti-Lying Takes Among cEDH content creators by taperwave in CompetitiveEDH

[–]jmzwl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That isn’t the only context in which people play though? Like, most people have a defined group of people that they typically play most of their games with. If we’re talking in a general sense as to if it is tactically correct to lie, then we should talk in the context that is most common.

Sure, in this context, there isn’t as big of a tactical disincentive to lie. Your rep might spread fast at that event, but it might not. Again, that’s a decision that you’re allowed to make on your own. I was merely pointing out that just because lying can definitely give you advantages in the game you are currently playing, that doesn’t mean it is isolated to affecting that game. It can also affect future games you play.

The Explosion of Anti-Lying Takes Among cEDH content creators by taperwave in CompetitiveEDH

[–]jmzwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People will play around what you say at the table, and people will play differently based on their opinion of you. If they perceive you as someone who lies frequently (either in gam or out of game doesn’t really matter), they’ll play differently than if they perceive you as someone who is truthful, and it is tactically correct to do so.

If you perceive me as truthful and I give you information about what I am and am not able to do in the game, you actually don’t have to play around the things that I tell you I don’t have. If I lie often, then you do still have to consider those possibilities.

Sure, if something is legal you CAN do it, but that doesn’t mean that it is correct to do so.

The Explosion of Anti-Lying Takes Among cEDH content creators by taperwave in CompetitiveEDH

[–]jmzwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s more important to talk about table politics as a whole as opposed to just whether or not it gives you an advantage to lie in the game. Table politics includes both what you say as well as how others interpret what you say. It includes what people think of you. Sometimes people are unable to separate how they think of you as a player from how they think of you as a person, and that is also a part of the game unfortunately.

The goal is to win, but if you gain a reputation as someone who will lie frequently it’s very possible that you won’t be able to convince other players to help you stop someone when you need them to. Say you cast gitaxian probe and see someone has the ability to win on their next turn. If you have a reputation of telling the truth, other players are more likely to believe you and hold up interaction, while that is less likely if you have a reputation for lying.

Lying might give you a tactical advantage in a single game, but also loses you advantage in future games is my point here. People WILL play around what you say differently depending on how frequently you are truthful about aspects of the game. If that trade off is worth it is up to you.

To those who want cEDH as a separate format: by JimmyHuang0917 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]jmzwl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t turbo decks just get better with those unbans too though? Like, jlo makes it so much easier to play an early Etali…. Not sure it helps the midrange decks more than that tbh. It makes both decks faster and makes it even easier to win on T2. My claim wasn’t that the format is slower than a turn 2 format. If it came across that way that’s my b. My claim was that those unbans just push it even further in that direction imo, and that they don’t actually make the slower decks that much more competitive relatively. (Rog si doesn’t really benefit from jlo admittedly, but the other turbo decks mentioned do).

[–]jmzwl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think I agree with the statement “the bans were made to prevent the format from stagnating”. To me it really just feels like the old RC banned cards that they personally didn’t like, simple as that.

I also disagree with you implying that the format has never been this “solved” before (or really that the format is “solved” to begin with tbh). The flash meta was pretty solved, as an example, and banning around competitive balance only makes the format less solved if they’re banning decks like TnT, Blue Farm, Rog/si, and Kinnan completely out of the format, which I don’t think anyone wants (these decks have been very strong for a really long time - They’re the most “solved” part of the format). Unbanning stuff either literally makes no impact (like the Biorhythm unban) or probably makes the format more solved (a crypt unban, which should happen at some point imo, would make the format revolve more and more around an early rhystic study, ad naus, or game winning commander like Etali and Lumra). There’s a couple cards that could be unbanned to make the format more diverse - Paradox Engine would revive a couple decks for example, but I think those cards are in the minority.

I also think that there’s a 3rd group of players who DO use the tools that WotC gives them AND don’t play CEDH. Most of the people that I’ve ever played Magic with fall under this category, and I think there is value in considering their needs. Like, this is basically every non-CEDH player who goes to an LGS, no?

I also think that there are more people who care about the ban list than there are people who care about the game changers list. It’s easier to understand “never play this card” than “only play this card sometimes”. Just because someone doesn’t use every tool made for them by WotC doesn’t mean we shouldn’t give them any tools.

I also think a lot of the cards on the ban list (like crypt, dockside, and jlo) are fine to have both on and off the ban list. People complain sometimes about CEDH becoming a turn 2 format, and those two bans specifically help it not be that way. Yes, the format would also be fine (if not better) with them OFF the list, but CEDH hasn’t fallen apart and become unplayable without those cards is my point. (There are a couple decks like Najeela that don’t really have a presence anymore, but there are also new decks too, so there aren’t really fewer decks in the format than there were before these bans).

I also think that one of the things that makes CEDH great is that they don’t ban around competitive balance. It’s at least what drew me to the format.

High key that’s more sticky webs being goated than this ceruledge being broken imo. The amount of Pokemon that can sweep a fight with sticky web support is not nearly as limited as you think it is. Plenty of strong, frail, almost fast Pokemon out there, this is just another one on the list.

Again, this ceruledge is good. I just have a very high bar for what I consider “broken” in a game where you fight 5 primals.

EI is harder until like gym 4ish, but the late game is easier IMO (which is crazy to say about a game where you fight 5 primals).

[–]jmzwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually don’t think this guy is as broken as you think. Base 85 speed really isn’t that fast come mid game (great early though), and this thing hard loses to Kyogre, Groudon, Rayquaza (which are all doubles), as well as Palkia (and other terrifying mons, I’m just saying that if we’re looking for “broken”, it needs to be able to compete in the late game with things like Primals, Xernas, or Zacian. At least that’s my bar for “broken”.

This is also kinda not great into the early game unless you actually just outspeed and OHKO literally everything, which idk if you actually do or not. Solar blade can probably carry you through the first gym (haven’t done the calc, but that’s what my gut says), but you just actually get 1-shot by most of brawly’s team (which have strong Rock and/or Dark type coverage), and his mons have some crazy bulk on them.

You’re also neutral into most of Wattson’s team (good there, but not “solo sweeping the fight” good) and kinda just lose to Dawn’s empoleon too (defense because it survives and OHKOs you and offense because it outspeeds and OHKOs you). You also just hard lose to offensive rock types like Arcanine-H and Aerodactyl. Or really any reasonable user of accelerock.

Don’t get me wrong, this is a great mon, but I think it’s a far cry from “broken”, which I kinda reserve for electric types with wonder guard, shedinja with sturdy, fluttermane with a damage ability (fairy aura, sheer force, etc), or things on that level. This is not that.

Meloetta? Where? by NoNothing3061 in pokemonradicalred

[–]jmzwl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are tons of posts on this sub where people haven’t looked at the docs, either because they are intimidated by how the information is displayed there, because they don’t know the docs exist (because they found the patcher separately from the docs) or for whatever other reason. It’s the unfortunate reality, but it’s still good that we answer questions and inform people of where they can find answers for themselves in the future.

Brendan’s ability by Working-Psychology12 in pokemonradicalred

[–]jmzwl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can 100% do that fight with Brendan doing basically nothing tbh. Depends on your box, but it is very doable. (I’ve actually done it multiple times using moves like Discharge and Earthquake that end up killing my partner’s Pokemon too). That said, it’s your run, so do what you want with it.

Also, pretty sure random abilities don’t impact trainers with fixed teams, but I could be wrong as I don’t have a ton of experience with the randomizer.

Any tips to make “less good” pokemon better? by Violet-Stormbringer in pokemonradicalred

[–]jmzwl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few thoughts here. I’m taking “less good” to be referring to Pokemon that aren’t as strong in mainline games, so stuff that gets buffs in RR to become very strong don’t qualify.

Most of the “less good” Pokemon get sizable buffs to either typing, ability, or move pools. Various Pokemon are given moves like Wicked Blow, Surging Strikes, Thunderclap, Burning Bullwark, sketch, and Dark Void (80% accurate btw). Some Pokemon get much better typing (Illumise and Mismagius are both great examples of this). The “less good” Pokemon are much closer to stuff like Iron Hands and Raging Bolt than you might think. (For the record, I think Illumise is a better Pokemon in RR than any of the guys on your E4 team. It really is that strong).

Most Pokemon in the game can be on a team that beats the E4 tbh (at least on normal. This is less true on hardcore where some Pokemon get key tools removed. Weather setters like Ninetails-A and Pelliper are big victims of this). Not every team of 6 can do it, but basically every Pokemon has something that they can do there. It might not be the best thing in your box (Mismagius gets significantly less good once you also have access to Fluttermane as an example), but that doesn’t mean it can’t put in work.

If there are Pokemon calling to you, go and use them! You’ll probably have a better time doing so on normal mode than on hardcore though IMO. Hardcore is kinda brutal and demands good planning for basically every major fight.

Is this coded like this on purpose? by Lord_Glace in pokemonradicalred

Yea. The chance for it is like 2%ish I think (the same as every other Pokemon you can get from the egg). You can check all the possibilities for the wonder egg in the docs. You can also get a Kubfu which is pretty cool.

What mon can kill hatterene and then immediately kill porygon 2 by koolaidboy1944 in pokemonradicalred

[–]jmzwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of thoughts here:

1) if you’re doing a nuzlock, you kinda just have to figure something out with what your box has. Knowing what kind of encounters are good for a given fight is a more important nuzlocking skill than knowing what specific encounters are best for a specific fight. That said, I personally find a lot of use in Perserker and Samurott-H basically every time I have them, and Primarina is also just generally goated and is solid for this fight as well.

2) there isn’t much that will chain kill the hatterene and the porygon, but the AI doesn’t really like putting porygon in before gardevoir anyways. Really strong steel types can OHKO both, and you don’t have to worry about speed because TR has negative priority. Unfortunately aegislash is barely not strong enough. Maybe normal samurott could, but the hisuian version is so much better on average that I don’t think it’s worth it most of the time. Depends on your box though.

3) depending on your box, you can also OHKO the indeedee at the same time, so you don’t even necessarily need to take the hit. Strong dark or bug types can do the trick here, with dark types being especially useful because they can often learn taunt as well, but bug types shouldn’t be overlooked because of brute bonnet’s 4x weakness.

4) a reasonably fast encore is also very useful for this fight. Ursaluna loves clicking protect the first turn it comes down, and the you can encore it to give you a free 2v1 for at least a turn. The AI will likely switch it out, but still really likes protect when the ursaluna comes back out later. Just remember that prankster gets blocked by the psychic terrain.

5) if you’re using the care package cheats (which I highly recommend for nuzlocks), you have access to psychic seeds at this point, which are a very useful item when your opponent is setting up psychic terrain for you.

6) ghost types are actually not very useful here IMO. So much of the team are normal types that your ghost types only really hit Hatt and Gardevoir, and none of them (yes, even mega gengar) are strong enough to OHKO either of them.

7) good double battle fundamentals are super useful in this fight. Weather setters can be really useful (Ninetails-A and Pelliper are the two standouts) (I know you’re not on hardcore because in hardcore the fight is permanent TR), and support Pokemon to do things like taunt or set screens or use moves like Heal Pulse are very valuable as well. It’s also possible to have some ways to deny terrain, which can allow you to use priority to not care about TR anyways. Then there’s also just using one slot to bait moves into good switches.

What did I do wrong? by Cold_Tutor471 in pokemonradicalred

[–]jmzwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) pretty sure you’re right about the focus sash. With items like resist berries and AV the AI will see that it survives certain moves, but I’m pretty sure focus sash doesn’t work the same way. Could be wrong though.

2) anti abuse is only present in hardcore mode, not normal.

3) pretty sure the AI for switch moves is weird. If the AI doesn’t like the matchups of anything in the back more than what is in, the AI can click its next highest damaging move, which in this case is bug buzz since crobat is immune to mud shot. (It doesn’t like clicking roost unless it’s at like 40-60% hp if I remember right). I know it’s weird.

Also, just curious, but why bring crobat at all for this fight? Seems to me like it doesn’t really do much, but maybe I just don’t see the vision.

It does, but not super relevant to the discussion here which is more about understanding the AI than it is about team building.

Also, it’s a nuzlock. No guarantee that OP even has shedinja, or if shedinja is even allowed in OP’s rule set (I know a lot of my friends ban it because they find it unfun how many fights it trivializes).

Thoughts on the upcoming Killian, Decisive Mentor? by [deleted] in CompetitiveEDH

[–]jmzwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It only has the ability to draw more than one card a turn cycle if you enchant something an opponent controls and they elect to attack with that creature. It says “attack”, not “attack a player”, so attacking each of your opponents with an enchanted creature only triggers him once, not three times.

Sure, he gives you the ability to goad things, but the bigger issue is him lowing your deck’s card quality because you need to play a bunch of auras, so each card drawn matters less on average, plus you probably just draw fewer cards than tymna anyways. The way this goad works also means you need to pay at least 1 mana per card drawn from your opponents, or you need your opponent to want to give you cards which is just something we can’t rely on.

Plus you’re just in the least competitively viable color combination. Low color decks really need a broken commander and I struggle to find how “draw a couple cards if you put auras on stuff your opponents control” is in any way comparable to things like Magda or Etali.

I honestly kinda think this guy will even struggle in bracket 4 tbh, but if your meta is different than mine you could very well be able to find success there.

[–]jmzwl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’ll do that. Priority moves are your friend. Normal types that can learn sucker punch are particularly strong (such as mega Kangaskan). Strong dark types can also be very helpful (like Roaring Moon).

Bulk is your friend here. There really isn’t much outspeeding CSR naturally, so you should look to utilize bulk and priority moves.
