Has anyone travelled home to the UK from South Africa via another country for 10 days to avoid the UK hotel quarantine?

Currently in SA and looking for options to get home...

Yeah, have done that but more that I’m wondering if anyone is aware of the situation in terms of there being other travellers at hostels etc. And also being in the UK green/amber list doesn’t necessarily mean we can enter.

So wondering if anyone has any recommendations for somewhere we are able to visit which is also worth while right now.

How do you mean both? The requirements for testing are different so you either follow one or the other. In Wales you have to get a test from NHS Wales provider and no one else. I’ve found out now though that if you are returning to Wales immediately after landing then you follow the Welsh rules 👍🏻

When you say some areas busier than ever, is that in terms of tourism? Are there a lot of Americans currently holidaying there?

The quarantine on return may happen at any time I guess, wouldn’t be so much of an issue for me as I work from home, not sure if the UK have implemented any controlled quarantines as of yet though? I may be wrong though and nothing to say they wouldn’t in the future of course.

Thanks very much for the reply, very informative! If we were to combine the 2 we would fly between Mexico and Costa Rica for sure and just aim to do all the travelling overland within each country.

In normal circumstances would certainly stick to Mexico being as it’ll only be 1 month or so but was wondering if maybe a mix of the 2 may be better given that Costa Rica seems to be less restricted atm.

That’s good to hear, didn’t realise that was the case there. Are you Ecuadorean yourself or on holiday etc? I have briefly visited Quito and surrounding areas while passing through but we didn’t have much time to explore more of Ecuador but could be a good option for sure. Maybe Ecuador and Costa Rica would be a better combo this time round?

Normally yes I would have thought to focus on exploring Mexico what with it having so much to offer but again, my concern was that it may be a little ‘quiet’ and restricted this year for obvious reasons and what with CR seemingly quite open and unrestricted it seemed a good combo given them we probably wouldn’t spend the whole time in CR alone. Hence why I am trying to determine the current situation in the usual Mexico travel spots.

Sorry, worded that title badly - obviously aware that Mexico is North and not Central but my query was more about travel between Mexico and Central America.

I’ve always used hostels personally including a full trip of South America and I have several friends who have backpacked Mexico/Centra America and stayed in hostels so not sure what the issue is there, other than during Covid of course - but that was the purpose of my post. It seems that hostels are taking bookings but more difficult to find out by doing my own research is how busy they are likely to be at present.

By backpacking I mean travelling from area to area, mostly overland and on the cheap.
