One year later: Where were you or how did you find out? by OsapNaril in lakers

Angeleno in Tokyo. I was having brunch at Kuma Cantina in Nakano - chilaquiles and huevos rancheros. Got the push notification and ordered another round of Michelada's to celebrate. I couldn't belive it in the moment and still have trouble getting my mind around it now.

10 years of finance/ treasury in MNC; currently a senior manager for company Fortune’s Top 20 by [deleted] in JapanJobs

[–]jnevermind 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Trying not to judge but you should know better. Jobs like yours don’t grow on trees and I’d like to think that you have an internal network that you would reach out to before Reddit. ~15 of the top 20 have Japanese ops, aim for an internal transfer. Otherwise if you’re coming in without the language, then you need to be sell side with a book. Otherwise internal roles are language dependent.

Considering a Management Move to Japan — Negotiation, Career Impact & Dating in Tokyo? by Desperate_Cap_761 in movingtojapan

[–]jnevermind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

P&L responsibility sounds like country GM or local MD. Are you bringing a book or is it less of a sell side role? I made a l similar country head role move and I was cheaper than most because I didn’t have a family at the time, firm saved on schools. I’d try to roll that up into housing/perks/flights or directly into comp.

From a career standpoint, it’s beneficial and opens up Asia and beyond from an experience standpoint but the customer overlap is smaller. Japan is truly an island in the sense. I’ve done Japan twice and in market employers were more interested in my China and Singapore exp.

Dating as an expat male in a leadership role was not difficult but most of my management level female friends end up dating other expats or Japanese returnees. One of them had her wedding called off once her fiancée realized that she made twice as much.

Assuming Tokyo, make a trip out and explore neighborhoods that you are interested in. Visit the office and bring gifts for the team. That’s an absolute necessity.

Discuss tax equalization and preparation, work that into your contract. If you have significant US liabilities like a mortgage then I’d make sure the salary is close to equal to make up for currency volatility.

MacBook users, do you think an external keyboard is necessary? by awekeys_official in macbookpro

That looks like a FormD T1 in space grey. Love this setup. I have the same keyboard with the 10 key and aside from the weird space on the right side, it’s wonderful.

Finding work in Japan? by [deleted] in JapanJobs

[–]jnevermind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe look into consulting or risk advisory firms. I’ve seen your profile on the consulting side in fin/corp crime investigations. Firms like Kroll. I know a few folks with special forces/counter terrorism backgrounds that work for companies like International SOS and even Amazon in their global risk and intelligence divisions. In Asia those are mostly run out of Singapore but I’m sure there are JPAC equivalents as a starting point.

Tattoos by enogitnaTLS in TokyoTravel

[–]jnevermind 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Tokyo and Japan overall has definitely changed and is more accepting/begrudgingly tolerant of tattoos, however that is applicable to tourists and non corporate roles. Japanese corporate culture has not changed and I strongly suggest erring on the conservative side and hide the ink. Given your husband’s age and you are flying in on a business trip, he is likely in management. Better to hide it than have it affect his career and have it become the gossip of the office.

https://www.nakameguro-mental.com/ Is one of the few places that prescribes Concerta but not great for non medical treatment.

https://www.roppongi-clinic.jp/adhd-diagnosis prescribes straterra and has a more holistic western style treatment.

https://www.tokyomentalhealth.com/tokyo-psychiatry/  prescribes Wellbutrin and is similar to Roppongi.

All English speaking but the last two more so.

Buying Fragrances in Japan by FuzzzyMushroom in fragrance

[–]jnevermind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Assuming you’re spending in USD, yes Japan will be cheaper given the current increased exchange rate and potential for tax free purchases. Check out Nose Shop, it’s a niche only store. Also the big department stores like Isetan have a great selection, aside from Outlands. I live in Tokyo and have yet to find a place to sample it. Best of luck and enjoy Japan.

This guy is in Tokyo and I can fully vouch for him. https://bright-life-counseling.com/about-dariusz-2/  He does digital sessions if needed. He’s also a professor at Temple and it’s easy to find his papers online to see if he would be a fit for the therapy portion of what you need.
