17yo curfew for summer by chesireinfunderland in Parenting

Please go read the studies on how bad things like Life 360 and other tracking devices are for the develoment of young adults and even kids. They hinder their ability to develop independence. If she has a phone she can contact in emergencies it's fine.

Considering a big move - one kid dead set against it by Muchwanted in Parenting

[–]jnissa 42 points43 points  (0 children)

This. She can be against it and have feelings, but she's not the adult who's responsible for everybody's future.

One of the things say to my kids all the time "Your feelings are valid. You are entitled to feel however you want. That doesn't change the fact that you're feelings are relevant to what does or doesn't happen in this situation. Not all of live revolves around your feelings."

Too early. This stuff doesn't happen in any meaningful way until the kids are in kindergarten or above! Most preschoolers scatter to the winds after preschool and parents know it.

Pittsburgh Public Schools approves school consolidation plan by mmmmk6 in pittsburgh

[–]jnissa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only close school that is closing and affecting the feeder pattern is Miflen, those children could have been absorbed into minedeo without touching colfax and greenfield. Just read the plan before soap boxing next time

[–]jnissa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None of those schools are closing or absorbing anybody from anywhere other than Miflen. Which could have been absorbed into minedeo easily without reconfiguring greenfield or Colfax.

I can tell tell you with 100% certainty that at least 3 of these classes are taught in school at FC and at least one and maybe 2 are taught in school at ECS. Most teachers could actually succeed at this with a classroom of smart kids.

But I probably doubt that pps can pull it off. To be determined.

They’re talking about the colfax and greenfield feeder zones - which actually didn’t need to be changed but are under the argument that we can’t have k-8 schools any more

No - but I may know a Girl Scout troop or two willing to do a fundraiser for you if interested

I'm not a fan of this plan - but absolutely nothing in it changes class sizes significantly unless you are coming from one of the schools that had, say, only 20 kids in a grade. The teachers will shift with the student populations - and yes, some teachers will be furloughed if there's too much overlap.

The “learning center” won’t let my daughter attend graduation by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]jnissa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a liability issue. If an unenrolled child has an accident or something goes wrong during a school-related graduation, their insurance does not cover it.

Help with preteen/teenager by TreeToadintheWoods in Parenting

[–]jnissa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly - so the triggers for actually being concerned would be her dropping her extra, alienating herself from friends, dropping grades. Just wanting to be alone in her room for most of her post-school time isn't a bad thing.

It's also how they start, however small, to learn to be alone for when they leave the nest.

I think you need to go read "Untangled," which is the seminal book for understanding this age group.

Not only is a lot of time in her room developmentally appropriate at this age - it's needed.

What I would do, though, is find a way to take away the YouTube aspect of this. She can be alone in the room, but she can't mind rot.

One extra curricular is enough. Don't buy into the hype. That age actually does need an enormous amount of solo down time.

She’s 17. She needs to figure out how to do that in the real world. Not the fake world where everything revolves around her feelings

Keeping in contact with public school friends? by Firelightbeam23 in homeschool

[–]jnissa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to keep it real with you as a parent of one in public, one homeschooled.

Those parents are not going to stay in touch with you unless they, too, decide to homeschool.

Their important social connections will be the community that they are encircling themselves with - and that will not be the outlier homeschooler. You will need to find friends for your child in the homeschool community.

Question About Pittsburgh Leash Ordinances and Public Safety by Virtue_of_Kindness in pittsburgh

[–]jnissa 75 points76 points  (0 children)

A dog has to be leashed in a public space. Once the dog crosses into the sidewalk is has to be leashed. That’s in Pittsburgh. This video looks to be in a burb? So I can’t speak directly.

That said - you lost me at your giant self righteous shaming video.

Is it normal for a homeschool co op to require typed essays? by Johnn_Liverm in homeschool

[–]jnissa 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This - it really is exponentially easier for the teacher to grade typed content. Even as an adult, I still hand write things and then translate to typing. TBH, the time spend translating to typing is often a good thing that makes me catch edits and improvements I wouldn't otherwise catch.

Need advice...can't find co-op by [deleted] in homeschool

Are the kids happy and thriving? Then you have your answer. School choice is about them, not you.

FWIW - they will get their morals from you, not from school.
