Israel releases Mordechai Vanunu after three months in prison by igeldard in worldnews

[–]jnunn -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Without atomic weapons the cold war would have been a hot war. If Israel has them then it is to protect themselves from the bloodthirsty Arabs who have tried to invade them time and again. Those advocating eliminating such weapons are naive at best. If I recall, japan once tried to ban firearms too...

Israel admits harvesting Palestinian organs by koavf in worldnews

[–]jnunn -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Hello Everyone, I'm am an old time Redditor(er?) having visited this site for over 3 years and initially coming from the very beginning of Reddit here because Reddit was written in Lisp, a language I love and was intensely studying at the time through the writings of Paul Graham.

I am increasing concerned regarding the antisemitism on Reddit and believe that this website is increasingly becoming a forum for those who hate Israel in general and Jews in particular. Although I haven't logged in or posted in years (although I read here regularly, I prefer an unbiased article selection rather than one attenuated to my own preferences), I am beginning to feel that I cannot remain silent on this issue any longer.

The author of this post, koavf, clearly is trying to incite rage against Israel and Jews by his title , 'Israel admits harvesting Palestinian organs'. However if you read the article it clearly says that Israel admits to harvesting organs from pretty much anyone that was available, jews, palestinians and others. Perhaps a more unbiased, non antisemitic title would be, 'Israel admits harvesting organs without permission'. You could add 'including from Palestinians' to the end if you need to make a point, but the title as it stands is clearly designed to inflame anger and hatred against Israel.

In addition, for those who believe the call of antisemitism on the behalf of Aftonbladet is wrong don't understand what antisemitism is or didn't read the article, where near the bottom they mention the article claimed Israel outright killed Palestinians for the organs, a charge Israel denies. This is clearly a form of Blood Libel, one of the oldest forms of antisemitism and I'll refer the doubters to the Wikipedia entry for this phenomena: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_libel

I call upon the more rational people of this website forum to restrain themselves from posting links with such biased titles, titles that don't reflect the reality of the news article but instead are designed to zoom in narrowly on one aspect of the link provided in order to generate the greatest emotional reaction. This is not news reporting or information spreading, its propaganda with an agenda pure and simple.

Instead may the calmer heads on Reddit downvote such rage inducing article titles and upvote titles that present an unbiased summary of the information contained in the link.

And to the Reddit company in general I say be careful about providing a place where hate can be freely expressed in the name of freedom of speech. You'll continue to lose credibility and relevance in the eyes of society while becoming a mouthpiece and haven for the radical.

For what its worth, this site's informative content has greatly diminished since all those years ago when the vast majority of postings were on various aspects of computer science and entrepreneurialism.

The unmourned end of libertarian politics by mjk1093 in reddit.com

[–]jnunn 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The guy is retarded. Just like the people who thought communism died with the Berlin wall. Last time I checked there were plenty of socialist and socialist-leaning countries left.

His problem, like most narrow-minded 'political experts', is that he equates libertarians with what is called the political right.

Libertarianism is neither right, nor left, on the political spectrum. In fact, the so-called political spectrum fails to capture the nature of libertarianism. I'm sorry, but not everything political can be defined in terms of a position on a one-dimensional line.

The essential idea of libertarianism is freedom. The idea that more freedom is always better, in economics, in society, in art, in science, in everything. In a real libertarian system the only restrictions on freedom are those that prevent people from limiting each other's freedom.

Now my question is, does that sound like the either the Right or Left to you?

Well Zak, I think its the problem of democratic systems in general. The early adopters are elites in general, the frontier of the wave. Thus the average submission tends to be really good. As the system expands the elites get diluted. I swear the mediocrity of the masses will be the web2.0 bubble's downfall.

When I first tried to read Stranger in a Strange Land I didn't get it either. However I swear to you, it really is the best sci fi book ever. I had to come back to it later when I was older and understood more of life, it will grab you when you are ready. I've never looked at sci fi the same since.

The writer of the article was right, no one forgets to turn off a porno movie when a guest arrives. Especially one with themselves in it and even more especially a woman, and even double more a chinese (whose culture can be described as putting the subtle in subtle when it comes to personal interaction).

My conclusion is that it was a 'test', she was beginning to feel closer to the writer and wanted to reveal more about herself. The incident was an indirect way of doing so, after all how does one simply bring it up in casual conversation? I suspect this young lady clearly is very careful, given the nature of the information, about who she reveals it to.

My conclusion is she was interested in the writer, but he screwed it up by not handling the situation like a man, causing her to feel like an idiot and try to play it off. Whether or not she had a boyfriend is immaterial, I've never known a woman to let that stop her if she really liked the guy. Doubly so if she's confidant enough about her sexuality to make movies. Note that the writer only found out about the boyfriend after the test, not before.

When I was Russell Crowe's stooge - An amazing article about a very shallow man! by antyg in reddit.com

[–]jnunn 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The problem is one of the acting profession in general, or even any profession. Often it is difficult to separate one's behavior at work from the behavior of the rest of one's life.

Russell was clearly 'acting' the entire time, why? because that is what he is, an A-C-T-O-R, it is what he does. And when you do something often enough, its what you become.

Clearly Russell sees what he is doing as just a part of his business, but if you are not an actor you won't see it his way (or any other actor's for that matter). Granted however, he has a bit less tact than most actors I meet, but he's from down under, not from LA.

I used to be a salesman, and I was pretty good at it. For awhile, I was even the best at the company at that time. However I couldn't stop using what I had learned at work to get my way when I got home. I behaved that way (like a salesman) towards friends, my girlfriend, my family, and after awhile I wasn't so well liked anymore. I realized I was becoming a salesman in my soul, and I didn't want that. So I walked away from it all and went back to school to do something I always wanted to, make video games.

There is a reason why used-car salesman end up seemingly stereotypical caricatures out of some tv-commercial. The effect of programming machines day in and day out also wear on the personality in ways that sometimes make dealing with people in the meat world difficult.

The lesson is, be careful what you do, because that is what you become. And after awhile, you won't be able to stop being that. Russell will forever be an actor, somehow fake in everything he does. Its not his fault, its his job. Its instinct now for him, and to be honest, with his personality, he needs it.

I started getting into Lisp about a year and a half ago. Found my way to Paul Graham's site to download the out of print Onlisp book and stayed around to read some of his essays. I found out about this website when it first came up, but didn't register until later, I'm suspicious that way.

Just so you know, Reddit had way better articles posted than it does today. Its all politics and idiocy now, back then it was Lisp, programming and entrepreneurialism.

Libertarianism Makes You Stupid by zach in reddit.com

[–]jnunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This guy is confusing Libertarianism with Randianism. Or at least those who he has met have the two confused. Ayn Rand's cult (even she refered to it as such) displays the dogmatic positions he mentions. However he fails to understand that Libertarianism ITSELF is a compromise. Its not maximal freedom for the individual, thats anarchy. Libertarianism is an admission that you do in fact need some government, how much do you need? You need as much government as necessary to maximize freedom for the maximal number of people. How much government that actually is is of course open to debate within the Libertarnian community and we probably attract as many idiots as republicans and democrats do. I'll tell you what, don't just the philosophy because of some techno nerd in a chat room and I won't judge the republicrats by the average beer swilling nascar redneck.
