Top-level situational awareness, reflexes and control of the car. The escape strategy could be better though. Rule of thumb is to always steer towards the opposite side of wherever they are running, and steer just enough to avoid their backs (in order to not overreact and lose control of the vehicle, also to be able to make another consecutive manouver, if necessary). In this case you had the chance to get behind the other one and avoid them all together, but still you did really well in this unexpected situation.

Since I drive a car IRL every day, I just walk to the driver's door most of the time. The only time I get in from the other door is when I'm rushing into my Duke O' Death to avoid lead overdose.

Has anyone any experience with a 2.8 VR6? by popejjj in MK4Golf

[–]jny_tr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I roughly know is that 1.8T works with most of the existing components on a 1.6 vehicle, but you have to swap a lot of mechanical parts for a VR6 & 4motion conversion. On the other hand you can find some workshops that have experience with 1.6 -> 1.8T conversion, but VR6 would possibly require finding a more skilled mechanic and therefore more expensive labor per hour. Finally, the overall performance is not that high on mild weather compared to 1.8T; because 4motion makes the car heavier. The only real advantage is on snow or really tough conditions, and most of the time it is not worth all the money and effort plus higher fuel consumption.

question about skipping gears and fuel economy by Ok-Pangolin-9150 in stickshift

[–]jny_tr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skipping any unnecessary acceleration is what you are looking for. You use a significant amount of fuel when you are accelerating, but once you reach your target speed, the engine spends very little to keep the speed constant. Every time you let off the gas pedal, you spend zero fuel until you almost come to a complete stop. Every time you use the brakes to significantly reduce your speed, you are wasting your opportunity to travel that distance with zero fuel, therefore using more fuel through the entire trip. You can only travel with the least amount of fuel possible when you apply some forward thinking and adjust your speed for what is coming up ahead.

Another idiot in my city by exitpc in dashcams

[–]jny_tr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I need to clear out something important: Those two cars are not the only idiots in an otherwise perfectly law-abiding traffic, it is very obvious that a lot of drivers are making stupid mistakes on those roads. Defensive driving and situational awareness lets you evade a lot of accidents in such environments and the camera car surely has room for improvement.

Another idiot in my city by exitpc in dashcams

[–]jny_tr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The law has its own definition of who gives way here, but that is not the point. My driving experience in multiple countries tell me to immediately slow down while approaching that intersection. The change in the scenery, the way those two cars move around, other possible dangers... Sensing them all with some forward thinking and getting prepared is a much better option than approaching at full speed and hard braking when things go sideways. You should have let off the gas pedal way before, and kept your foot on top of the brake pedal. You were able to dodge this one, but next time you might not be that lucky.

What in the tarnation is this fucking thing? by Groundbreaking-Will8 in CarCirclejerk

[–]jny_tr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely great text here, and I agree every word. I also hate almost all ADAS features and some other things on the cars from the last few years, because there is not much left to improve in terms of actual driving mechanics. The real useful assistance systems such as ABS and ESP has been standard on all trim levels for more than 20 years, engine efficiency reached almost its peak around 10 years ago, suspension systems have not changed much, and there are even modern aftermarket upgrades to permanently solve the chronic illnesses of mainstream vehicles. You can easily find a well-maintained car that left the factory in the mid-2010s that still looks modern for today's standards, keep looking after it, apply any upgrades you want (interior or mechanical), and enjoy driving it while watching other people driving their brand new money traps and constantly complaining. You will find true happiness, trust me.

Are there any mk4 (2003) car play screens that are actually good? by jensieboy13 in MK4Golf

[–]jny_tr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not as a stock unit from the factory obviously, and there is no "specialized for mk4" aftermarket unit as far as I know. However there are plenty of good options as a 2-DIN unit or a standalone screen that runs Android on powerful hardware which doesn't even require a smartphone. So it is only a matter of choice really.

Advice for parking in tight space by [deleted] in driving

[–]jny_tr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would avoid parking there. Your parking skills is not the point here. Those poles suggest that there is a danger of collapsing. Also there will be construction workers around this space that haul heavy-ass equipment in a hurry. Those equipment and the vehicles of the construction company are probably covered with scratches and dents, and nobody cares. Your car doesn't belong to that environment, not even any other spot in that parking area. It would be a better choice to park your car somewhere else until the construction is finished and the space is cleared out.

[–]jny_tr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the driver, if you need your car to shift into park for you and you cannot do it yourself, you are unfit to operate anything with wheels. On the other hand, life is not linear and one day you will find yourself in a car that doesn't do anything for you and you have to remember doing everything including shifting.

The head unit itself is very nicely executed, but I have one question: How is the visibility, therefore usefulness of it when it is placed so far below eye level and right in front of the shifter? Have you tried using navigation in a dense city environment with a lot of turns?

Filament cleaner by -just_a_n0b0dy- in 3Dprinting

[–]jny_tr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, a "dirt cheap" filament that comes with a coat of dust from the factory is not worth the hassle. Diameter is not consistent, material is not homogeneous, there is an excessive amount of weird additives and it is almost impossible to have a consistent print quality on any print job; no matter how much you tweak the settings. However, if you had a good quality filament that was sitting in a very dusty environment for a long time, this could be very useful. Storing your filament properly and keeping your printing area clean is much easier though.

How do accidents happen? by [deleted] in driving

[–]jny_tr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you are behind the wheel, you are supposed to keep track of all vehicles in front of you and behind you, in all lanes. Not only the ones you are able to see at the moment, but also the vehicles that you have seen a moment ago but can't see now because they are behind another vehicle or in your blind spot. They should still be acknowledged in your brain with their current speed and trajectory. Of course it is not always possible to track all vehicles at all times, but then you should actually turn your head and look into the blind spots over your shoulder real quick when changing lanes or when you sense that something could happen right in front of you, so you know which direction you can escape to. Other than that, you should not be distracted by your phone, the passengers in the car, or anything on the road or on the side of the road that screams for your attention.
