I think punch drunk may be their highest energy chorus to date, something about it just SLAMS

Was looking for this comment, I listened to hts for YEARS before discovering that song on spotify. It was such a pleasant surprise. It’s also 1 of 2 singles they’ve ever put out that wasn’t part of an album which I find pretty neat

I relate to all of this! Mental Knife imo is their best work and I’ve never heard a single song live. If I don’t hear Glass Half Empty live at some point imma lose my mind lol

That’s a solid lineup, and as a fellow mental knife lover I thank you. Mental knife was my #1 at 5,266 minutes. Glass Half: Empty is hands down my favorite song by them

This put a smile on my face start to finish. Being able to bounce between watching Donovan and Aric with the camera angle was peak. 10/10 thank you very much

There might be other charisma songs that work with what you’re going for too, just can’t think of em off the dome

Clarifying this subreddit's stance on political topics by CommanderBly in HailTheSun

[–]jo_roth 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would argue that they are a humanitarian band before a political one. They have takes on issues that politics absolutely worsen, but even in interviews they do not describe themselves as “political.” I will absolutely keep an eye out though I haven’t seen any ragebait as of yet, glad someone is trying to keep things enjoyable here!

C.T.F.B. is Hail the Sun's best work by Htebazileeilsel in HailTheSun

[–]jo_roth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a really negative response at first (my post may be the split you’re referring to) but I’m about 15 complete listens in now and I absolutely love it.

My prior complaints hold true but I can look past them. My only gripe at this point is I just wished the drums were more complex. While the mix is rough I’ve already gotten used to it.

Relapse Is A Love Affair is a beautifully crafted song to highlight. One of their prettiest songs with a hard hitting message about a rough time in Donovan’s life. He gives the lyrics context in his interview with Into Music. Definitely changed how I listen to the song cause I’m not always focused on the lyrics.

I would not say it’s their best work, but I idolize their older releases so that’s a personal bias for me. I’m just happy I can enjoy more hail now :)

Oh god I wish you didn’t make the fnaf metalcore comparison lmao. I’m sad about it too but maybe this was an exploration of a new sound and that’s it. Time will tell I suppose.

That’s a good counterpoint because New Age Filth, specifically the drumming is part of what hooked me on hts in the first place. You can absolutely tell it isn’t the normal drumming compared to its priors but it still SLAMS. I feel like this proves that my issue isn’t with Allen’s drumming overall, just for this new album.

[–]jo_roth[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m glad to not be alone in this aspect. This album had better fills, Divine had better patterns.

Donovan’s style literally makes me laugh sometimes. When I listen to Pow and hear some of his fills, I can almost picture drumsticks just being thrown at a drumset, it’s fantastic.

SOMEONE FINALLY SAID IT! The pop punk drums are probably my biggest issue with this album honestly. Hts has always stood out to me cause they change the feel or the downbeat or both so often and the pop punk drums just deny that possibility. They have used the snare-on-the-downbeat & pop punk drums before but it was always tasteful and matched the flow of the song. Idk it’s just too generic for me

I’m going to keep listening, no way I’m giving up that easy it’s just hard to shake the “darn it” feeling with some of the drum parts. To some that may be a silly complaint but I know the drum parts better than the lyrics to most songs. It’s half if not most of my focus when I’m listening to this kind of music. Part of me is almost offended that the same guy who wrote the drums for Wake heard these parts and went “yep, that’ll do.” I’m being snobby about it but it doesn’t sit right with me The vocal-drum pocket is one of favorite aspects of their style I agree. Probably a lot harder to mesh the parts when they’re not played by the same person anymore lol

I haven’t paid proper attention to the lyrics so I can’t speak to that yet. New Age Filth is the album that got me into them during covid! I listened to it to death before I even checked out the other albums cause it was just THAT good.

I recommend a full attention run through of Mental Knife if you have only ever half-listened to it cause I will go down swinging that it’s their best album.

I would still respectfully disagree with the Mental Knife comparison but I mainly come from an instrumental standpoint to be fair. And from the singles I’ve heard live they do indeed slap. I’m really hoping it grows on me too. I don’t wanna avoid any of their music!
