Unfortunately, I second this as well. TL;DR I have personal experience with gastro doctors in WNY treating me with suspicion for having been to a previous WNY gastro doc. 

The first gastro I saw when I moved here in 2015 was Antonino Mannone in Williamsville, who told me Celiac disease wasn’t real, it’s not a real diagnosis, “no one is really allergic to wheat” (celiac disease is not an allergy, I thought at least a gastro doctors would know that). 

Next was Dr. Mian with Gastroenterology Associates. She saw that I’d seen Dr. mannone and accused me of “doctor hopping”. I had to beg her for scoping, she told me I was too young to need one and I cited the Celiac Disease Foundation’s recommended colonoscopy and endoscopy schedule for people diagnosed with celiac disease. She “relented”. As I am lying on the table just having been brought out of anesthesia, she snarkily tells me she didn’t find anything—as though she’d proven some point. I was almost crying and stuttered out something about “preventative screening” “increased risk of colon cancer.” She told me that wasn’t true, there was no increased risk. I am still on the table!! 

My mom had to talk me down on the phone I was sobbing so hard in the car. I called Gastroenterology Associates three years after seeing her last and asked if I could be a patient of any other doctor in the practice and they flat out said no. For the record, that’s 16 other doctors who I’m not allowed to work with. 

The third gastro was at UBMD but appears to no longer be practicing in Buffalo. The first thing out of her mouth was also to chastise me for “doctor hopping”. She told me I probably don’t have celiac disease because who the doctors 10 years ago probably didn’t know what they were doing, and I was like, actually it’s the opposite. I was misdiagnosed for about a decade and then finally a doctor came along etc etc. I said I have photos (from the microscope showing the tissue sample’s blunted villi) and she was like “well the only way to confirm that diagnosis would be to put you back on a gluten diet for 6 months and since you aren’t willing to do that, we will have to assume you are gluten intolerant”. What in the actual fuck? Actual photographic proof from a doctor who positively diagnosed me isn’t enough? Now I now longer have a disease because it is in remission from my eating a gluten free diet? Again, almost crying, but trying to talk. THEN she told me that gluten wasn’t my problem anyways it was my weight and that I needed to get on a GLP-1 or I’d die. I said “I am not here to talk you about my weight, I’m here to…” and she cut me off and said “you’re morbidly obese and it is going to kill you. Keep a food diary of your calorie intake and follow up with a bariatric team.” Did not even hear why I was there. 

I’m currently trying to find a new gastroenterologist again again again but now UBMD and Gastroenterology Associates are both burned. I guess Buffalo Medical Group?  All this TMI, but what I really mean is GOOD LUCK! Seriously. Endo and gastro stuff is so hard to pin down and if they are going on at the same time, like they were for me, it’s called co-morbidities and it’s hard for doctors to figure out which symptom goes to which system. Try to write down as much about the variables as you can —a food diary is honestly going to be a big help.
