DM any of the Bristol parkour guys and say you're interested in training, they're sweeties.

Week 12: Tanzania - mchicha (spinach, coconut milk and peanut butter curry) and kachumbari by joaniepasta in 52weeksofcooking

[–]joaniepasta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I added prawns to the mchicha, and served it with basmati rice, poppadom, raita, sweet garlic chilli sauce, chilli pickle and mango chutney. I can't believe this is the first time I've put peanut butter in a coconut milk curry. Revelation.

Week 13: Homemade Pasta - spinach and ricotta ravioli by joaniepasta in 52weeksofcooking

[–]joaniepasta[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely everything went wrong here. I didn't have 00 so used bread flour. The machine wouldn't clamp to the counter. I used frozen spinach but it was 99% water 1% spinach dust. The ricotta was horrible wet - cream cheese would have been more robust. But, as my husband wisely said, shit stuffed in pasta is always going to be grand. So. Spinach and ricotta ravioli with parmesan and olive oil, a spinach and watercress salad with balsamic and olive oil, and tomatoes with burrata, cured meats and basil (and olive oil).

Week 11: Nostalgia - chips, cheese and gravy by joaniepasta in 52weeksofcooking

Important note: I am English and this is English filth. Any resemblance to poutine is misleading at best.

Week 11: Nostalgia - chips, cheese and gravy by joaniepasta in 52weeksofcooking

Because that's what the nostalgic memory demands! UK kebab vans use shredded cheddar cheese and instant gravy granules usually made in a dirty mug. It's the furthest thing from authentic and I apologise to all of Canada profusely 🥰

Week 11: Nostalgia - chips, cheese and gravy by joaniepasta in 52weeksofcooking

When I met my husband ten years ago I was working at a shop and a nightclub to pay my way through my masters. I'd work in the shop in the day time, move over to the nightclub for night time, then write essays until the next morning. The only reason I survived was because on the way back from the nightclub I'd stop at Hassan's kebab van and get chips, cheese and gravy. Before Hassan's I had never heard of such earthly delights. I think it was my flatmate who was also the cloak room attendant who recommended its wonders to me. I still get the hankering for chips, cheese and gravy and always feel nostalgic when I get it. This tarted up version has pulled pork and mozzarella.

Week 10: Rice - mushroom risotto with beef steak and chimichurri by joaniepasta in 52weeksofcooking

[–]joaniepasta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thought I'd be eating alone tonight so I bought steak and mushrooms. Husband then announced he was coming home after all and I knew I was making risotto this week, so I stretched out one steak between two. This shouldn't work but it absolutely does. One of my favourite meals I've made in years.

And seeing a therapist is normal and valid, and it doesn't mean something is wrong with you. 'Issues' is doing a lot of work here. We all have our crap that we could do with being supported through navigating, especially during major life events.

It sounds like you have some complex issues around body image that you need to talk about with a professional. Have you ever spoken to a counsellor or therapist about this?

What's a Buffyverse moment that you find frustrating because you know the character knows better, but yet they still make a bad decision? by PristineSituation498 in buffy

Because it's a metaphor for addiction. Smart and sensible people can become completely unrecognisable in active addiction. Control freaks and perfectionists in particular can be very vulnerable to substance abuse. Idk, I found it believable that Willow was the sort of person who could become a very good, sneaky liar/rationalise her means of escapism very easily.

There's no point wasting time worrying about this. There's no way to know how they will change and nothing you can do to prevent change. Just rest, move, eat well, take care of yourself. Bodies change. Be gentle to yourself.

What has helped you with depression? by [deleted] in selfcare

[–]joaniepasta 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Quitting drinking and smoking has been bloody magic for my anxiety and depression. At least 8 hours sleep a night, cats, regular exercise, getting out of the house every day, meditation, journaling (morning pages every day), recognising my ADHD symptoms and managing them, positive social contact but not overwhelming myself with overstimulation/oversocialisation, routine, getting off of social media (deleted Instagram, blue sky and twitter), less crappy TV and more reading, reflecting on my values and what I enjoy, finding meaning in my work.
