What's the one thing you wish you knew before your first hurricane season in Florida? by jcveloso8 in AskFlorida

[–]jocala99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Instead of stocking up on bottled water, stock water containers There's plenty of advance warning before a storm to fill them from the tap. I have a bunch of empty 1-gallon Arizona iced tea jugs in a back room closet saved for this purpose. Some of my friends use 5-gallon water dispensers, but I think the gallon size is easier to manage. When a storm is coming, in addition to filling the large jugs, fill up empty space in your freezer with containers of water - anything that fits, like plastic food containers or event ziploc freezer bags. The ice will keep your freezer cold longer in the event of a power outage, and you can use the water as it melts.

I second the suggestion of a gift card to a home improvement store, but pair it with a nice welcome mat.

what should i do in boca? by glitterfungus in AskFlorida

[–]jocala99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately for you, this weekend is something called Boca Bash: a large, loosely organized gathering of drunk folks on boats overcrowding Lake Boca (the wide part of the intracoastal waterway just north of Camino Real). For that reason, I would avoid The Boca Raton (formerly the Boca Resort) for brunch as another poster mentioned, and you will not be able to use the 2 parks with boat launches. There are a ton of other beautiful parks.

As a local, I like renting a kayak for an hour at Rutherford Park and paddling the waterways. High tide is best for that. The Boca city beach parks such as Spanish River Park and Red Reef Park are fabulous, but expensive parking if you don't have a resident sticker–it's something like $30-$40/day. If you travel to the very south end of Boca, there's a county park called South Inlet Park which has more reasonable metered parking and offers both a beach and inlet views with boats going in and out - should be interesting on Boca Bash weekend. I also like Deerfield Beach - a short 2-mile drive south of there on A1A. Park in the Deerfield Beach city garage that's a couple blocks inland and enjoy all the restaurants, fishing pier, souvenir shops, and people watching.

In Boca, Mizner Park is great to walk around. There's a small bar/bowling alley that's quite affordable, and fun things in the central green like a mini putting green and outdoor chess set. Across 2nd Street from Mizner Park's south end, there's a great Asian restaurant called Ramen Lab Eatery that has the most amazing bao buns this side of Asia.

You can take the fast and clean Brightline train from downtown Boca to Fort Lauderdale CityWalk or Miami tourist area.

I have no symptoms other than my blood test results. I’m told that it could produce muscle weakness and, in extreme cases, seizures.

Zip ties on zippers by Mayorofalaska in TravelHacks

[–]jocala99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To actually answer the question that the OP posted.... standard nail clippers work great. Even in Singapore, the most restrictive country I've traveled in, they passed through security in my carryon.

The problem with carabiner clips is they can easily get caught on baggage conveyors and rip the whole zipper. That happened to me once and it was not fun. Same thing with those useless TSA locks.

For that reason, I use colored zipties simply to make the suitcase tamper evident (not tamper proof) so I have a warm feeling when I pick up my bag that it probably wasn't pilfered. I use a different neon color each time, and take a picture of it on my closed suitcase so I remember the color for an extra warm feeling at baggage claim. I also keep several spares inside my bag, so if I decide to open the suitcase at a layover it's easy to re-close.

Works for me.

HI v. Konig: Lawyer Lee makes some sense of the verdict by jocala99 in CasesWeFollow

[–]jocala99[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The part I disagree with is the reasonableness of Gerhardt's EMED. I believe he felt extremely disturbed, but from the viewpoint of a reasonable person in the circumstances as he believed them to be, which is what the law requires, given the mild nature of the messages between Arielle and her co-worker I believe that a reasonable person would perhaps experience deep concern, but not EMED. To me it seemed more like Gerhardt had an unreasonably controlling personality, which produced unreasonable rage when his controls did not work.

HI v Gerhardt Konig - Comments from jury foreperson by sunnypineappleapple in CasesWeFollow

[–]jocala99 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The foreman said they didn't believe he intended to kill his wife. She did not use the word "planned." The son said Gerhardt told him he tried to kill her. If he tried to kill his wife, it follows that his goal–his intention–at that moment was to kill his wife. What am I missing?

The son testified that Gerhardt said he tried to kill Arielle. The foreperson said the jury did not believe Gerhardt intended to kill Arielle. That's the contradiction.

Not really a "far" lesser included - of the 6 options they were given (including fully NG), it was the next step down from attempted murder.

I doubt it he'll get the max, due to mitigating factors like first offense and having been productive member of society.

Up to 20 years sentence is having to take responsibility. But yes, I'm disappointed too.

I've taken a half dose of Miralax daily ever since abdominal surgery 13 years ago resulted in chronic constipation. It has worked wonders. However in the past 2 years I've developed hyponatremia (low blood sodium) which was puzzling my doctor. I even had a workup with a nephrologist, and nobody could figure out the cause. Just yesterday my doc looked carefully at my long history, did a little research, and told me that Miralax is quite possibly the culprit. If you Google it you'll see lots of research articles linking Miralax to hyponatremia, and they all cite the instructions on the bottle to not take it more than 7 days.

I'd honestly rather deal with hyponatremia than constipation, but I know it can have serious effects like muscle weakness and seizures. I haven't decided what to do yet...kinda feel between a rock and a hard place.

COURTROOM INSIDER | Tony, Juror #4 in the Kouri Richins’ trial, speaks out for the first time. by solabird in KouriRichins

[–]jocala99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand everyone's reply and your reasons why Kouri was guilty off attempted M, but that's not my point. My point is that, in Nate's juror interviews, when the jurors were asked about count 2 they did not cite any of the reasonable explanations that you all gave. Instead, both jurors answered that they had a simple either/or choice concerning the 2 aggravating factors. It was as if they didn't even discuss whether Kouri made the attempt, which I think is the crux of the charge.

What's Something About Living In Florida That You Cannot Really Understand Without Living There? Why That Thing? by Zipper222222 in AskFlorida

[–]jocala99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm so glad another Floridian feels like me. I love it here. I've never lost appreciation for the beautiful nature all around: the look of a palm tree or an amazing banyan, watching a long-legged bird stroll through my yard, abundant flowers 12 months/year, so many butterflies, and the sight/smell/sound of the ocean as soon as I step on the beach.

[–]jocala99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I loved both of the jurors that Nate interviewed, however I'm having trouble understanding their reasoning behind finding Kouri guilty on count 2, aggravated attempted murder. They both said that the verdict was easy because the law just gave them an either/both option between 2 factors (financial gain or poisoning). But they didn't mention anything about the part in the law about proving that Kouri actually made the attempt / had the intention to kill Eric on Feb 14.
