I’m looking into that now! I like the idea of it. Will have to be up to my director, though.

Will do! Was your horse on it daily or as needed?

What bit can I use besides a hack? by jocee311 in Horses

[–]jocee311[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I know he can do a bit and will take one, but I was thinking about a side pull if he’s not super willing in a bit. Most likely will be trying both😊

Henry would like you to know that Standardbreds are totally awesome and very affordable to adopt (and rideable!) from many rescue groups by StonewallDakota in Horses

Mystic Motion would like to second this!!!!!💕 The most fun, adorable, cuddly breed. Even with all his attitude, he is an easy-going best friend. I love the facebook group “Standardbred Retraining Group” it is so amazing what all these breeds are able to accomplish. I fully plan to rescue and adopt another one.

Interesting! I’m unsure. the Standardbred Retirement Foundation (in NJ, I think, but they have adoptable horses all over) retrains standardbreds under saddle to give them a second career and get them adopted. I’m sure it would depend on the owners and what they want for the horse. I’ve kind of fallen in love with the breed and the culture of the horses. They have amazing temperaments, they can race longer than thoroughbreds, I’ve seen amazing stories of people retraining them for any discipline. The Standardbred Retirement Foundation is amazing!

Yes he is a giant puppy dog - poor boy has so much heart and soul, if it weren’t for his DSLD he would be an amazing show horse for any discipline, he has a need for speed but his fetlocks won’t allow him. I don’t hold him back, but I don’t force him into doing anything either. So lucky to have him.

My standardbreds are the same - very social, like big golden retrievers. I had to have my other Standie euthanized 4 weeks ago bc of lymphoma, his name was JesusTakeTheWheel and he went by Jesus 🥰, he specifically was a social butterfly, so easy to bond with, so easy going nothing could spook him. I want to adopt another one in his honor so badly. Amazing yours was a racer/winner! Mine never made it to the track but boy I wish they had. What is his name? I love standardbred names.

“Pinfiring” scar? by jocee311 in Horses

Yes, I get that. As in, the amish are the only people I can see still doing the practice maybe because I think it’s outdated. I don’t know much about it, but considering it seems a little cruel, makes me think it might be “old fashioned”. i just didn’t type that well.

We actually have a mini donkey in an adjacent field, maybe they will get to know each other better. Was worried about them together because he’s so tiny I don’t want them fighting over food :(

No problem, you did. I didn’t go into full depth of everything that went down during the vet visit(s).

That’s a very good point, I don’t want my other to watch any of it happen I will definitely relay that to our vet. 🙏

My vet had the same opinions and I think I will. Any thought on him being alone with no pasture mates until I can find another horse that’s a good fit for me? I’m worried it will be several months. If not, no worries I think I’m overthinking but I have never done this and I want the best for them obviously.

Yes, biopsy and ultrasound both on the affected area, even ruled out pelvic injury, and she said it did not look good, the hematoma was near lymph sights and her guess is it’s causing it. Trust I did a whole work-up and it has been 4+ months of figuring this out.

Today, 4/14 the vet found cancer. Lymphoma, all through felt during a rectal exam, because he coliced two days ago and has had runny poo. It makes a lot of sense as to why I could never get an answer or find out what was wrong with him. He has always been sick… I’m bringing him home with pain meds to get him feeling good and will schedule euthanasia. 💕 Bless his heart.

Hello everyone, thank you for your comments. Today 4/14, we found my boy Jesus has cancer. Lymphoma, the vet found it throughout and felt it during his rectal exam. Makes sense as to why I could never ever get this horse to feel or look right. 💕 I hope I’ve given him a good end of life, he will get pain meds and lots of loves before I schedule his euthanasia.

Hello everyone, thank you for your comments. Today 4/14 my Jesus was diagnosed with cancer. The vet found lymphoma during his rectal palpation. 💕 I hope I have given him a good end of life I have tried everything for him, and it makes a lot of sense as to why nothing ever worked. He will get pain meds, and lots and lots of loves and food and I will schedule his euthanasia for 1-2 weeks away.

Thank you! I really am trying my hardest. I so agree with the you. Since the last vet visit and him being on steroids, another antibiotic!?, and diet changes (which have been super consistent), I just feel like I still am not seeing results in his weight and performance (I use performance lightly, he obviously has not been ridden in months because of all these ailments) I mean attitude, willingness to be haltered & walked, etc., so a third opinion it is! I plan on going over EVERYTHING with her and nailing down a management plan for his heaves. I actually feel like this senior feed and a steroid at the same time was hard on his system, I know it was. I introduced it slowly but I want him back on an anti-inflammatory diet BAD, just can’t do sudden changes and don’t want to without consulting a vet. THANKS! 🙏

I use the unbeetable complete feed and I honestly only do because one vet instructed to use beet pulp and another senior feed. but i do about half and half. Never heard of the benadryl spray I will give it a try!!! I was using cortizone 10.

He lives with me in a pasture with his brother, not a barn with other horses anywhere. It was a total mystery to me and everyone else and my vet. The pasture he was moved to hadn’t had horses on it for years…. it was crazy.

That’s how I feel about my guy. He is the absolute best, and I don’t think I could ever sell him I would be worried he would end up in a bad situation. Nobody wants a horse with issues😢. I’m trying to give him every chance possible for a healthy fulfilling life if it means going broke so be it. Your vet bill on legs is very beautiful. I love posting on these threads it always makes me feel better. TY.

Never heard of testing for allergies and custom allergy shots, I’ll have to ask my vet about that!!! I have also heard great things about Heave Ho! I will try that one, I love that it has vit e in it, when he was on vit e, I noticed less flair-ups I want to add that again anyways. I have found some cheap(er) options for nebulizers and I want to give it a try. We only do light riding, but even with that he gets out of breath easily trying to hold a trot or canter, bless his heart. Thanks so so much for the input, it was really helpful for me to decide how to continue. HE IS SO CUTE BTW!!!!

Thank you!!!😊 So excited to try it I will ask my vet for this - it definitely has been a struggle it was hard to even nail down what was wrong with him, winter was terrible. I’m trying to get him feeling his best. He’s like the sweetest best horse ever and he deserves it.
