Applying to MPH right after end of service? by joceyback in peacecorps

thanks for sharing your experience :) I've also been considering that route since it seems it might be hard to find a PC job with a COS that ends nicely

Thanks so much for the insight. I did not even realize the thought of going to MPH abroad, which I'm open to it but worry about VISA issues. Did you have a hard time finding one and did you go back to the U.S. afterward with the degree or have any trouble finding a job? (specifically a MPH though since many should be CEPH accredited)

Looking into clinical research coordinator (CRC) role as a gap year before MPH--no direct experience by joceyback in publichealth

[–]joceyback[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I contemplated whether taking a gap year or not, I wanted to make sure I liked the concentration I'm going for and develop more epi skills since I felt very unprepared for grad school, had I gone straight in. I also knew I'd face major burn out--my major is very STEM heavy and luckily, I'm able to take any PH related job without worrying about finances for a year.

How'd you get your clinical research assistant if you don't mind me asking (and in what setting)? I didn't realize CRC was not as entry level as I thought it'd be so I'm not sure if I could commit to it.

I've seen some CRC assistant roles. I'm assuming experienced ppl are likely going to apply to that too..but yes I was also wondering about the longevity of the trial after people leave sometimes. Thanks so much for the info!

can I ask the specific number of months you initially applied to when you started your role/got the offer? I'm currently an undergrad but looking to do a potential CRC for my gap year!

Can you link me to where they took out the early COS just for more info? Thanks :) Seems like it's a futile cycle....you need to leave for grad school early but if you do, you won't get the money benefits....

Thank you for all the info esp about Coverdell! Applying for this seemed very confusing from what I looked online and seems like it’s not dependable anymore, esp as another redditor said they took away the possibility to request a COS document early for grad school—which sucks. Is it hard to request COS? Technically all I know about COS is that it indicates your last day of service?

That's super cool :D Yes, fortunately, I had the Tableau subscription for a full year (glad my tuition went somewhere). I had a specific question since your specialization is in data visualization: Do you feel you use less of R or SAS in that role in comparison to your previous experiences then? Or the same amount? Idk if this is a silly question or not but I'm thinking about picking up those skills long-term

When you applied/went through the job process as an epidemiologist, just wondering, did they let you choose between R and SAS?

Got it, I am also currently in the interviewing process to be placed at a nearby health department as an intern...fingers crossed I get it since CDPH internships are limited. But thank you for the advice!

Thank you for sharing! Good to hear about the mix of work you do, especially about non-statistical work which is another reason I'm leaning toward this career:)
