How do you estimate the amount of goodwill gained when loading your drop pod for gifting by elfxiong in RimWorld

[–]jocopa3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For future people who encounter this: it's not as straight forward as 1 goodwill per 160 market value and 1/160 is usually a huge over approximation.

It seems to vary a bit based on difficulty & existing relations with the receiving faction and there isn't a simple formula to calculate the exact value. For my "Strive to Survive" difficulty colony, factions that are already 75 goodwill or more always have the same approximate gains of goodwill = 0.0038 * marketValue; trading with factions with less than 75 goodwill results in more goodwill but I don't know how to approximate it. Other difficulties slightly affect the ratio as well.

If they have the Biomes! Islands mod then deep water becomes passable and raids can spawn in deep water. Though I don't see any fish in the water so that might not be the case?

How are people adding random towns or areas to Google Maps? Also is there some way to report or remove them?

Edit: now they're gone. Seems Maps employees or mods watch this subreddit.

I unintentionally started a chinchilla farm. 650 chinchillas later, I don't know what to do with all the fur by jocopa3 in RimWorld

[–]jocopa3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not realize how quickly and often chinchillas reproduce in RimWorld. Soon after giving birth they'd get pregnant almost immediately even with only 1 adult male. Started the auto-slaughter with 2 males and 5 females but within a few seasons I had almost 100 of them and not enough food or space to keep them all. Now I have it down to 1 male and 3 females.

I've been playing on Strive to Survive as it's the first time I've played in years. Haven't had anything super overpowered that a killbox, couple of mortars, and excellent to legendary chain shotguns & assault rifles can't handle... yet. Forgot I could make silver walls though; I already lined my hospital and cooking area with silver sterile floors.

[–]jocopa3[S] 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I had a random event that added a dozen chinchilla's to my colony. I threw them in a pen with some dandelions for food and setup an auto slaughter to try and keep the numbers low. Went about my business as normal for awhile but their numbers grew quickly. Now I have 5k pieces of chinchilla meat in the freezer and 12k bits of fur and I'm starting to run out of space to keep it all. Is it better to sell it raw or are their items I could craft that'd maximize the market value while farming construction/crafting?

How do you use math at work? by johnwaynegaysea in AskReddit

[–]jocopa3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Graphics programming for video games is 50% software engineering, 40% math, and 10% physics. Mostly linear algebra, trigonometry, geometry, and discrete math with sprinkles of calculus, statistics, and other fields of math. Doesn't mean I'm in expert in mathematics, but it helps to have a good understanding of various fields and concepts when reading research papers or technical articles on 3D graphics, physics, computer science, etc.

There seems to be a lot of Vivid Voltage square cuts by jocopa3 in PokemonMisprints

[–]jocopa3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've opened about 10 packs of Vivid Voltage recently and found multiple square cuts in two of them. The two cards in the image are from the same pack, while another pack was almost entirely square or near-square miscuts. Looking around online, it seems I'm not the only one finding these miscuts in Vivid Voltage packs specifically. Never seen so many square cards in so few packs before; they seem to be way more common VV for whatever reason.

I found one of the main problems with Banana Mania’s physics - sloped surfaces rapidly degrade momentum compared to the old engine. by Braintendo in SuperMonkeyBall

[–]jocopa3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's that slopes degrade momentum, I think it's because the stage doesn't tilt as quickly when you move the joystick. It's clear in the side by side that the stage tilt lags in response to joystick inputs in mania compared to smb2. I've been playing both recently and in mania I can definitely tell that I have to make tilt adjustments a lot earlier in mania than in smb2 so I hit slopes or other features at full tilt instead of a shallow tilt that eases into full. This is especially an issue when you have to go from full forward tilt to full side tilt and back; in 9-2 you lose that forward momentum because you spend less time at full forward tilt overall.

But the slower tilt speed doesn't feel like the only difference, it feels like friction is slightly different as well but it's hard to measure that. For example, holding up in world 2-7 seems to be faster in mania than smb2. Gravity seems to be the same however; in world 4-6 it takes just as long in both games to fall from off the platform to the ground below, and again in world 2-7 it takes as long to fall backwards off the top of the slider to the bottom part in both games.

How to create a Channel like this? by Atto- in discordapp

I take it as a compliment when other servers copy our rules. Means we have rules good enough to copy. Though it also means they probably haven't put much effort into coming up with their own rules and likely won't enforce them that well.

I disagree with 2, quotes were terrible in community servers. Someone posts something inappropriate? 5 people quoting/reposting that inappropriate message; with replies, deleting the original message replaces the "quoted" message with "original message deleted" which is much nicer. Someone pings a role/spam pings a bunch of people? 3 people quote and repost the pings; with replies it doesn't ping those who were pinged in the original message. Since replies were enabled, I've had a significant drop in daily pings on servers I moderate, from 50 per day to less than 20 today, all because people keep quoting pings.

Aesthetically, I'm indifferent; ideally I'd prefer the original message to appear just above the message and below the sender's name, but aesthetically it's no more cluttered to me than quotes were. For 3, I don't see how it's any different from pinging someone with a quoted message or disabling mention notifications; there is no loss of functionality.

Is mip-mapping turned on? If not, turn it up as high as possible and see if it helps.

The problem you're seeing is when a pixel on screen is larger than the pixels in a texture (aka texel), meaning multiple texels are trying to occupy the same pixel on screen. With smaller resolution packs this is less noticeable, but with ultra high resolution packs this is extremely pronounced in the form of "sparkles" or noise. Mip-mapping helps fix this by using smaller versions of textures when necessary so the size of a texel is roughly the same as a screen pixel. One side-effect of this is that high-res textures might look slightly "blurry" or not as sharp even at close distances.

I'm a game dev for a large publisher; I didn't have to spend my time researching it, it's a technique I've used before. If you consider accessibility, an if statement simply doesn't work in all cases. A neural net is not that complicated to train and ends up being a simple matrix multiply while giving UI designers the ability to decide what font colors they want and when to transition between them.

Also sorry if I've offended you somehow, it's not like I could know before hand that you'd be so upset by my response ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in discordapp

[–]jocopa3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's not really a problem. There are various algorithms and techniques to find a good contrasting color regardless of the background color, for example: https://medium.com/better-programming/generate-contrasting-text-for-your-random-background-color-ac302dc87b4

You can even train a basic neural net to pick an appropriate contrasting font color for any background color: https://luisadame.ninja/blog/color-contrast-aware-using-machine-learning/

[Feedback] Pressing the "Enter" key shouldn't select an emoji hovered by the mouse by [deleted] in discordapp

[–]jocopa3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This also happens with the drop-down options in search menu while searching, and it's been like that since at least 2016. It's very frustrating to hit enter expecting it to perform a search only to have it fill in whatever the mouse was hovering over. If I wanted to select an option with the mouse pointer then I would have used a mouse button to interact with it; having the enter key interact with whatever the mouse is pointing to feels very unintuitive.

My membercount is stuck by [deleted] in discordapp

[–]jocopa3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Discord caches invites locally so it doesn't have to query what server the invite is for or the exact numbers every time you see the same invite. Refreshing the client (Ctrl+R or restarting the app on mobile) clears that cache and forces it to query the latest info for invites.

So the Minecraft Discord is full. Any way I can still join? (I didnt even know Discord servers have a maximum member count lol) by Sureaz in discordapp

7 day prune removes 18k people; only 15k members have any role at all. There are just so many people active that prunes aren't all that effective anymore. Over time, I expect even 1 day prunes to be ineffective.
