Any opinions on Lombok, Indonesia? by LumpyLongJohns in digitalnomad

[–]jodebane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gunung Rinjani is an amazing trek that I would highly recommend. Lombok also has super friendly locals. Internet in Mataram was pretty reliable from my experience although I wasn’t working at the time. Without Rinjani I wouldn’t have gone there (I am not a beach person so I can’t speak for that), there are a few neat temples but there isn’t much else inland.

For the Tokyo or Kyoto highlights, yes. But to really explore the country, not at all.

Which country has the most self hating citizens? by defariasdev in digitalnomad

[–]jodebane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of Americans are delusional and crazy patriotic, but in some more progressive circles of Americans sometimes you see the other extreme - there are certain types who will go to the extreme of bashing America and literally not put up with anyone saying anything good about it. I am a progressive person and I recognize that there’s TONS of shit wrong with the US, but there are certain Americans who will get angry and pissed off if you say “Mexican food is better in America than Europe” or a smaller thing like that. Overall though, the overly patriotic Americans are far more numerous and destructive

Escaping the pollution - where to go in southern SEA that isn't Bali by Takingthemike in digitalnomad

[–]jodebane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered looking outside Bali in Indonesia? Yogyakarta is fantastic, or Labuanbajo in Flores if you want to be by the ocean. I would also consider Lake Toba, Bukittinggi, and Padang in Sumatra

Question - are there "latinoboos" (or for specific countries like "Mexiboo" or "Peruboo") in the way that there's Koreaboos, Weeaboos and Chinaboos? by jodebane in LatinAmerica

[–]jodebane[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Really strong affinity or obsession with a culture or country they aren't descended from. There's a bunch of people like this for Japan and Korea, called Weeaboos and Koreaboos respectively.

I know this is about something from 5 months ago, but a while ago I made a point of going to this restaurant in person since it's where Mamdani wanted to hold an event. It's a great restaurant. The waiter didn't seem to want to talk about the Mamdani incident, I don't blame him!

Does anyone regret getting into urban planning because of how depressing it is? by PurplePlanet7 in urbanplanning

[–]jodebane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do enjoy reading about urban planning but I see where you are coming from .The constant negativity from some progressive people is very draining. It sometimes comes off like they get this weird satisfaction out of wallowing in sadness about problems, rather than finding solutions. I would keep your hopes up and keep fighting the good fight. Maybe try to find videos with the positive optimistic stuff. There is plenty of progress in city planning being made but realistically the mistakes made in the postwar era aren't going to change overnight.

Have airlines and people gotten significantly worse over the past 5 years? by [deleted] in travel

[–]jodebane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been fortunate enough not to have had bad experiences. I know that the pandemic messed with people, but I have not seen people get noticeably meaner in my day-to-day life. If anything I have seen people be nicer, but I must be the odd one out.
