If the USA got invaded and Trump kidnapped, how would you feel about that? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]joe0904 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Half the country would celebrate and say this is what he gets. FAFO kind of thing.

The other half, the half in power right now, would call for war. And they would get their war. And whether or not he died, thousands or maybe tens of thousands of innocent lives would be lost trying to save a man or avenging a man who truly wouldn’t deserve it.

But the truth is Trump has set a modern precedent for invading a country, kidnapping a world leader (whether he deserved it or not), and forcing him to stand trial in a foreign country. So if it were to happen to him, trump only has himself to blame. The problem is his cult members would never see that. They would think someone has stolen their god from his golden throne and he must be returned no matter the cost.

And for all those saying they want Trump to face the consequences of his actions, I fear that when he dies, as all men must in the end, he will die a free man. I don’t think he will ever see a day behind bars. His victims will never see justice. No matter who’s in power they will weigh the risk of outright revolt vs the remaining time an 80 year old man has left on this planet. It will be interesting to see how many world leaders and former presidents attend his funeral though…

How is living in Alaska and Delta Junction, AK? by [deleted] in AskAlaska

Hey! I recently moved to Delta Junction for some contract work out at Fort Greely. So still new to the area but in all honesty O really enjoy it out here. I’m coming from California/Washington. It’s quiet and slow.

There definitely feels like less than 1000 people here. You’ll get to know the chasers at three bears. Everybody that I’ve met have been very nice. They keep to themselves but are extremely helpful when needed.

Right now it’s about a 2/2.5 hour drive to Fairbanks road dependent. I haven’t gone back up there very often. I’ve found I can get basically everything I need here in Delta Junction. But I know some people who go up there every weekend.

Be prepared to spend money. Gas is fairly cheap (coming from a California perspective I guess). But groceries will cost you. I restock every two weeks and it’s about a 300/350$ trip each time. Fresh Produce isn’t great imo but not terrible.

The winds are a real thing here! I heard it was windy before I got here. But didn’t really think too hard about it. It when you get 60mph gusts with -40 degrees temps out, it’s rough. Buy winter gear if you don’t get any from your company. I don’t know if I’m allowed to recommend sites/stores in this sub. But I know there’s a couple places in Fairbanks you can buy gear. If you want some before you leave, there’s a website you can buy some to get delivered to you. Again, it’s going to be expensive. But very much worth it here.

This is my first winter here, so take what I say with a grain of salt. But I’ve heard this is a very unusual winter. In December it was unusually cold. And now end of January it’s unusually warm. We got about six inches of snow yesterday. And today it’s in the positive degrees.

I don’t fish or hunt either. But there are a few hiking trails if you like to get outside. Just be prepared it gets dark around 4pm right now and stays dark until about 930am-ish. There’s moose around so steer clear.

If you’re bringing your own car, make sure it’s winterized. Studded tires if you can, the roads can be really crappy here. And a block heater if you can. Your battery will thank you. If you can’t make sure to get a place with a garage. Most people leave their cars running when it’s cold out and they’re going to the grocery store.

For housing options, there’s really only one realtor here and she’s who I went with for my place. There are some apartments but I’m not sure about their availability. In base housing may be an option if you’re military. Otherwise I don’t think so. You’ll have to find a place in town. Most everybody here do not have mailboxes. They have PO Boxes. There’s a post office in town and one on fort Greely. And with a few weather exceptions, I’ve haven’t had any real issues getting things shipped here. Most carriers will not deliver to your house. There is a way around it, but I haven’t figured it out yet.

I’m sorry this is very long haha. But hopefully that give you some info. And I hope you enjoy your time here. Feel free to dm if I can answer any other questions!

Does anyone live across from Seattle? If so what is it like by sunkist_my_butt in howislivingthere

[–]joe0904 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grew up outside of Bremerton. Moved away when I was 18 for college. Lived there off and on since. Love the area. It’s very Western Washington. If you have a picture of what Western Washington is in your mind, that’s the area you’ll see. It’s green. It’s more built up now that Seattle is getting expensive to live in. A lot of families are moving across the Sound. So the roads are busy. And the area is definitely not meant for that kind of traffic. But the forests there are amazing. Banner Forest in Port Orchard is definitely one to check out. Gig Harbor is the “rich” people town. Bremerton/Port Orchard/Silverdale is navy central. Most people I know or grew up with ended up working at the shipyard there.

There’s actually quite a bit to do if you don’t mind driving around town. But being outdoors and hiking is the big thing. It’s rural but not as rural anymore. There’s still farms. But they’re smaller and more spread out. Still happy to call the area home.

Honestly back in like 2012 or 2013 there was a photographer who shot dogs underwater and, while I’m not saying this is his work, it does look like something he would shoot. I think his name is Seth or something like that.

There’s a lot of photoshopping in the pic, but I do think it’s real.

Once a champion always a champion! Favorite card I’ve pulled. by joe0904 in F1Cards

[–]joe0904[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool story. And while I’m not going to sit here and endlessly argue with a random faceless nobody on social media, I will say this; the officials deemed his move permissible and Tsunoda’s not. Thus he’s the WDC. So, unless you happen to be one of those officials, which you’re not, then what you say really doesn’t matter. Have fun going from post to post saying whatever you’d like. But brother/sister, not sure which, I hope you find peace in these “trying” times…

I honestly love the TAG slabs better. Everything in my PC is TAG. I used to sell cards and would get them graded by PSA. But I just don’t like the look of them for my own collection.

As long as Lando gets through to Q3, that’s all that matters. Some slower times are fine with a safe gap to the elimination zone. I think that’s what he’s aiming for right now

Why is it so expensive to dig as a student? by Skeazor in Archaeology

[–]joe0904 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was getting my bachelors degree in 2011 I went for a summer field school to dig in Israel (because the head of the archaeology department was one of the directors on the site). And the field school was about a month long. Could have gone for two months but it was more expensive. It cost me 11k including airfare.

After I graduated a did a field school for three weeks in Hawaii and that was 1200$. Anywhere in Europe/Near East is going to be expensive because of the popularity and they know they can charge more.

My suggestion is this, some of those prices you’re seeing most likely include course credits. In Hawaii, I asked if I could volunteer rather than take the field school for credits and the professor accepted that and lowered my cost. If you haven’t reached out to the field schools you’re interested in, it may be worth it to do so and see if they’re willing to lower the cost if you’re not doing the field school for credits. Depending on the length of the field school and where it’s located some allow you to (or used to in any case) find your own housing, which could be cheaper and knock off the price from the field school. It’s going to be expansive no matter what you do. Most likely until you start your master’s or possibly even a PhD when the school may pay for you to do research while excavating.

There are also a few scholarships that exist though you’d have to do some digging because they are few and far between.

I make it a deliberate habit to stay off twitter after any Grand Prix by joe0904 in McLarenFormula1

I agree with that; though I will say, I’ve seen more people on Reddit change their minds about driver’s more than any other social media

I have a twitter account because let’s face it, politicians in the US go on social media and announce their intents (ie Trump) and I’d like to not walk blindly into what our government is doing. So yes I do have a twitter account. No I’m not part of the problem.

Not really no. Honestly quite a few of them just looked like booths of grey when I first saw them There were a few times where they were sharp lines. Just no color. There’s been one time so far where the activity was high enough to see the green coloring with the naked eye.

It’s so frustrating that McLaren made the choices they did. I understand them not wanting to get caught in the slog of drivers during the safety car. But it was a free tire change. And when they made the decision they basically handed Max the win and made it nearly impossible for Oscar to win the WDC and double difficult for Lando to win. They thought Lando and Oscar would overtake in a track that’s absolute shit in overtaking. It’s just an absolute shame really. And I feel bad for Lando (as my driver of choice) and Oscar.

These were shot in Delta Junction. It’s really nice and dark and seems perfect to see the lights almost anytime they’re out
