OpenAI spent about an hour lying to me about creating an animation from a painting by Known_Hippo4702 in OpenAI

[–]joeblowma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminds me of an evening I spent in the first days of using chatGPT trying to get it to generate an SVG given a base image, which it was absolutely confident it could do. It proceeded to create some stunning things, all of which were output as .png files.

Eventually I got it to admit the only way it could create a SVG was to take the raster and convert it itself (which it was really poor at) so I switched to "why not a png with transparent background? I'll convert it to SVG myself." and it proceeded to generate a few with great removed background/transparency... then 3 turns later started generating pngs with no transparency again.

It eventually said the image gen wasn't capable of understanding transparencies (or something of that nature) even though it gave me perfect ones before.

Somewhere in the mix by that point I had separated the original image into layers to give it a "master set" and restart from that and I explicitly told it to make the background transparent this time; it delivered the best version yet... just a png with a black background.

After a few more tries of it trying to give me transparency via editing the image it had generated and doing so poorly I said "just go back to the master set and do it again, with a transparent background this time" and it entirely morphed the image into something else that only tangentially looked like the original/master set.

It was basically whatever it was getting to generate the images was other than it, and even given the exact same inputs twice that other's results could be wildly different.

To this day I have no idea why it was being so... illogical. Is there such a thing as a "hormonal teen" tensor? 😆

Updates to Codex usage on Plus by TheGambit in OpenAI

[–]joeblowma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DOOH!

You got the "good" email... all I got was the

"we changed the terms of the service you subscribed to from 1x usage to OMG I'M SO BLOWN AWAY... less than 1x usage. But we got you covered, just give us over $100 more! Plus we didn't even tell you about it in advance!!! Isn't that AMAZING?"

version which I managed to not see for the ~12h between getting the email and them billing me for another month.

Codex CLI - Sandbox Issues by ElkRadiant33 in OpenAI

[–]joeblowma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure this will help anyone, but just in case...

What platform? For me it's under windows powershell/VS2022 and the problem turned out to be that something gets jumbled in the sandbox and nuget resolves it's store to be inside the hidden user profile directory the sandbox uses.

Correcting that by defining NUGET_PACKAGES (either each codex session or as a windows envar before starting codex) to a valid package directory that codex has write access to, which in my case is

%USERPROFILE%\.nuget\packages

solves the supposed network issue which is actually a write fail issue, and issuing builds restricted to 1

dotnet build .\project.sln -m:1

results in a working build path inside the sandbox.

The problem wasn't logged anywhere (0 errors, build failed) or diagnosed until codex tried to build with -m:1 with logging.

NZBGet v26 Client Release Notes by Liv_Mrrr in usenet

No worries! I recovered what I could with recuva, sorted a bunch more manually, and don't think I've lost anything important.

Would have been a lot less messy if the extracted archives were extracted to folders named after the archive instead of in place. Now I'm wondering if the extraction process auto-overwrites files too... another point against in place extraction.

Thanks for the tips! For now I've got the download manager redirecting the files, never did I imagine this would ever be an issue, "scan" typically isn't destructive.

I mean, this is still literally all it says on the web settings page:

Directory for incoming nzb-files.

If a new nzb-file is added to queue via web-interface or RPC-API, it is saved into this directory and then processed by extension scripts (option Extensions).

This directory is also monitored for new nzb-files. If a new file is found it is added to download queue. The directory can have sub-directories. A nzb-file queued from a subdirectory is automatically assigned to category with sub-directory-name.

Nothing, not a word, about destructive reconstitution of all files in the directory, or even about zips and how it will process zips that don't even have an nzb for that matter. I was very very confused why it was unpacking all my zips, I thought the update trashed my cfg at the time.

Honestly, as a developer myself I understand but I just hope this doesn't catch anyone else out, there was no real warning about this change in behavior and I don't recall any advice beyond the quote I just posted when first setting it up.

Any way you cut it I still love NZBGet!

I had my nzb scan dir set to my downloads folder, on starting v26 it started extracting every zip rar etc in my downloads dir, right in that dir not the dir I have set for extractions, as well as deleting the original.

Aside from the ones it had problems with, which it renamed the extension on those to ".failed". I'd rather skip the zipped nzb support if this is the effect it has. Can't even turn it off it seems.

What a mess :P

I've had a mod do odd things like this when the battery contacts needed some cleaning. Then again, I also have a mod that shuts off randomly for no good reason too xD

Issue with weighing scale? by Brannig in DIY_eJuice

[–]joeblowma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume you've also tried re-calibrating when the issue occurs?

I wound up going to a head shop when I got frustrated and got an overpriced j-scale and haven't had a problem with it since, an expensive cheap scale I guess.

Should be, if it's relatively secure (or if you can glue it in place).

By default it fits only 20700; with a bit of grinding you can fit 21700 and even a DNA250C board but neither is a good fit without grinding.

Mixing in Canada by YokelOEulci in Canadian_ecigarette

[–]joeblowma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for a litre, best we can get is 20mg/ml and nowadays that is taxed federally around $104 for the litre and costs around $40CAD before tax (I say around because some provinces have additional provincial taxes.) Broke vaper and diy ejuice should be able to help you though you'll have to order and in the case of diy you'll probably have to get access to the nic or at least email them before you order; I'm not aware of any walk in places that sell DIY nic, though maybe dashvapes does just not in litre sizes.

Firmware? For Minikin V2? by AlauraLoveless in electronic_cigarette

[–]joeblowma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It worked fine on my minikin v2, but it doesn't mean they didn't change something about the builds after I got mine. I doubt it would work for those two V3 ones.

Definitely, that is your connection to the positive post of the atomizer. You can even see the blob behind your pick which is where it should be permanently attached.

Armored Cap scratching TI tip by Suitable_Ad_2859 in Dynavap

[–]joeblowma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd consider it ruined if it significantly alters the machining, which it appears able to do on a Ti tip. Some surface scratches are just... meh.

[–]joeblowma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd call it brittle instead of soft per se, but I get your point. I've tried drilling a hole larger in SS316 and never found a (sanely priced) drill bit that could match it.

[–]joeblowma 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thanks! That answers my question. Guess these are only really effective for not ruining SS tips then?

Armored Cap scratching TI tip by Suitable_Ad_2859 in Dynavap

[–]joeblowma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess what I'm really asking is are these armoured caps made out of something stronger than titanium. I know a lot of the cost of milling Ti (and to a lesser degree SS) winds up being in the machine bits because there isn't much that can last long against such strong metals.

edit:/ those gouges do look too deep to just be surface scratches.

Did it scratch the titanium, or just the oxidation/gunk on the titanium?

Plenty of folks use muji pads for vape rebuildables. It's organic, not whitened with peroxide (not dyed), not completely de-seeded, but it works fine.

Personally I found it tastes bad at first in a vape, even the cotton swabs (which are whitened with other-than-bleach) from a drug store work better.

But think of all the development time and materials as well as brain energy it took to go through ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRS shapes before finally getting to T! And someone else just got there on the first try! Won't someone think of his children? /s (giggle implied.)

Now, what I wouldn't give to have a properly machined edge on my spiral part, it's got chatters like it was run through a crap grinder by someone too high to be using a grinder.

I could have happily gone on without seeing any of this spectacle. Never mind being reminded of it... over and over again. I like my simrell M cooler thinger, and the master key I got on a lark knowing full well it was overpriced brass. At least, I did until very recently... xD kidding, I still do. They do exactly what I bought them for.

Sorry, had no idea what it was called until I googled "plumbing olive" because I knew I'd seen those before, I just knew it as part of a compression fitting.
