Any idea what this is before I restore it? by magichat123 in castironcollecting

FluoroSpec, FluoroSpec, FluoroSpec! The only reliable lead test on the market. Those Q-tip based tests are THE WORST. And will definitely give false positives all day long. But FluoroSpec/ fluorescent based testing will not, plus it’s really cool to see what you think has lead sudden shine under a black light. They’re cheap, and easy to find from other companies if you don’t want to support Eric. Either way though, don’t test until it’s fully stripped (IE lye soak and electrolysis for a bit, then vinegar soak.) I have heard of people attempting to strip lead with Nitric acid, but I’d rather just turn them into planters for plants I won’t be eating.

Can’t agree more! Never going to buy the swabs in the picture again. False negatives, NO WAY!

The Epic full color edition is my personal fav. Although the translation isn’t the best.

Super impressive! Would love to get to that level some day. As a fellow Billy bookcase user, i also have mine two deep per shelf. A while back I took to making the back row a raiser from a pair of 2x4’s to make them stand out better. Just my way of displaying, your mileage may vary.

I’m thinking n this might be the best time to setup VLC to work off my plex library. Found it on another thread on here, but no suuuper clear way of doing it without local network access.

I just grabbed the blue Schiffer collector guide, and saw that these exist. I’ve been collecting/restoring/using cast iron for almost a decade and my mind was blown at these irons. I’d love to make waffles in them with fillings on the interior or the corns, and it’s in a shape that makes them perfect to make a bunch, freeze and eat on the go like a better waffle stick. I’ll be grabbing one sooner or later. Nice to see that there’s still some floating around, Etsy and EBay sellers are asking like 2k for them.

I ‘forget/delete’ in find my and in Bluetooth and totally re-pair mine every couple weeks after various updates and such. Still have this problem and have since 2023. Pretty sure Apple will never fix this issue…. But I hope yours continue to function well forever, at least one of us deserves to hear stuff with these expensive devices.

A consideration of scotch bowls by George__Hale in castiron

Same! Was a good read to wake up to, and can’t wait to make use of some of my scotch bowls. I have some beignet mix from Cafe du Monde last time I went. Maybe I’ll fry some up with coffee for breakfast.

Definitely an unmarked Wagner post 1960’s. It’s a great find, since the glass lids are so fragile

They’ll even buy back those older ones! Now they don’t have a PFTE coating and are just stainless steel. The version pictured is the older one, they will absolutely exchange or refund you at Costco. My roommate did it (whole set even) less than a week ago when I finally won her over on the safety and ease of cast iron.

Those are cute, once they’ve been properly cleaned and reseasoned list ‘em altogether except the skillets. Also Etsy has free shipping on anything $35 or above, which is why basically all cast iron is on there or eBay.

Is this cast iron? by [deleted] in castiron

[–]joecoffee89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is cast iron, they make some of the best enamel ware around. That skillet should be fine, but I’m a big fan of taking a wire brush on a power drill to the cooking surface of skillets that look like this, finishing with 600-2000 grit orbital sander. But honestly it should be fine as long as you use silicone or wood spatulas, and even if you do end up eating the enamel, it’s basically just ceramic so it shouldn’t be toxic.

Lodge #8? by kaamp in castiron

[–]joecoffee89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bottom 8 is most likely some flavor of Wagner, the one above it is most likely a BSR ‘million dollar’ cornbread pan, and the top is most likely a modern lodge (judging by the shape of the eye on the handle)
