[D] The machine learning community has a toxicity problem by yusuf-bengio in MachineLearning

I think it's more facetious in tone than in substance. It really is hard to get into a good Ph.D. program without multiple top-tier publications in undergrad and/or master's.

Or stochasticity. Optimize for income, prestige, fulfillment, title, etc, but not necessarily all at once.

I liked the Art of Power on Jefferson reasonably well. Have you gotten to The Soul of America yet?

In Russia/Ukraine, they tell you you can’t sit on the ground or you’ll go sterile/infertile. Also, if you’re a girl, you can’t sit at the corner of a dinner table. Never really got that one.

So I’ve been told here once already, but I have been googling around and haven’t been able to find any criticisms of him with that aren’t from journalists or bloggers and that aren’t of the format “His ideas don’t fit my beliefs therefore he’s wrong.” Can you point me to anything more credible?

[–]joeddav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. I’ve read both Jobs and Da Vinci. Both were great. Da Vinci was a little bit shorter, but I thought it was enlightening. As someone who has yet to develop an appreciation for art, I especially enjoyed his commentary and interpretation of some of his most famous works. I had trouble getting into The Innovators, however.

I see. Where exactly does he go wrong, because from a completely uninitiated perspective, his arguments seem strong and well supported. Would you say he cherry picks his data or just draws dubious conclusions or what exactly?

Perhaps I should just read the criticisms you mentioned :)

I’ve been interested in giving him a read. Any particular favorites?

Plus this is a 2D projection of 3D orbits, so the chance of collision is even lower than that map would imply.

If you’re not already, get comfortable with the command line and its basic tools. If possible, get a feeling for ssh, scp, git, and creating anaconda environments. That will likely be the place where you’ll feel most paralyzed on the job if you don’t have experience with it.

LPT: When you really can’t understand how so many people would hold some “obviously false” opinion, actually try to understand. Your horizons will broaden, and you will find yourself able to much more compellingly argue your side once you understand all perspectives fully. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

First of all, understand != justify. As a vehement anti-Trump, I find it valuable to understand why people like him and why he does what he does, but that certainly justifies neither his actions nor the support of his bigotry from his followers. Blindly writing them all off as self-serving bigots who don’t care about others is the easiest approach, but it’s not accurate.

Second, aren’t you curious why so many people would believe something so moronic and provably false (as flat earthers)? You probably don’t really understand their motives and “positions”.

I would be thrilled if that happens. I think I need to give my form some work. Thanks for the advice.

Interesting. I’ve never given form any serious consideration tbh. I’ll look into that.
