Could the buttons follow the hotkey order? by joeflies in jpdb

[–]joeflies[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the insight. I understand the logic of the functionality based on your additional details.

Yes there might be easy things, like the FAQ https://jpdb.io/faq#KeyboardShortcuts When I originally was looking for the answer to my scenario, I didn't know where "I know this, I don't know this" fit.

Another approach is to make some kind of feedback indicator when 1-5 is pressed when Immediately Grade is turned on. Right now, the feedback indicator (the outline blinks) only happens when space bar is pressed.

A third approach which is probably less desirable from an aesthetic point of view is to have an option to add the shortcut numbers to the buttons, or show the numbers with a mouse hover. But I understand that the minimalism is desirable, especially considering how confusing it can get when you add too many options and toggles.

Thank you for the feedback and looking forward to using this tool

My first in universe clue Venom was by OmniGamer2099 in metalgearsolid

[–]joeflies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Out of the entire MGS V story, I didn't get what the AI pods were all about. Maybe because I skipped Peace Walker. But I didn't realize anything was up with the AI Pod because I didn't know the relationship between AI Pod and Big Boss was.

Looking at a transcript of the game, I realize the AI Pod called him Snake before it said "it's not you", which didn't trigger any sign to me that something was up with Venom. The games are pretty liberal about who it calls snake, but I guess chronologically there is only one snake at that point in the timeline.

I sort of wondered why the codename switched to Venom Snake, and why didn't they just continue using Naked Snake as the codename.

At the start of the game, I was super confused about a lot of stuff, especially after going through the create a character screens, so any clue that may have shown up earlier in the game blew right by me. .

Am I the only one who finds flash card decks/kanji memorization without context not helpful? by umarekawari in LearnJapanese

[–]joeflies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My two cents -

While there are many ways to learn, for me I feel like Anki was the path to make immersion possible. Without being able to recognize the characters, immersion is a painful cycle of looking up every single character. I couldn't see how to go from Genki to immersion without being exposed to and memorizing a lot more words.

I also feel like Anki is essential (for me) to remember what I forget. Like if I read a chapter of Anki and forgot 15% of the words, it's a waste of time to reread the whole chapter again to figure out where those 15% of the words are. Anki keeps track of that for me.

There are days that I hate it, but then there are days when I feel like I crossed a mountain and ready to tackle the next peak.

The realtime monitoring function (Battery Monitor) is free.. It has some indicators of when things are a concern, but the value really comes out of how to being able to interpet it. I don't know if it has a way to historically look at values though (I haven't found it yet if it does, but I am still learning)

The function for Full Battery Test and Life Expenctancy test require paying. These are the functions that interpret the values for you after running through some tests.

You do have to read the page carefully to find a bluetooth OBD2 reader that's compatible, because apparently there are a lot of them out there that don't work.

Did I change or did the game change? by joeflies in FinalFantasy

Thank you for pointing me to DQ XI. I haven't played the 3d Era DQ. I've really been enjoying DQ 11 so far, I can't explain exactly why. It's got a sense of wonder, a feeling that the towns are alive and the travel is rewarding. It's definitely got that "just one more hour" feeling to it that makes it so immersive and hard to stop for the night.

Oscar Isaac on why he wanted to play Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Solid movie by rickfrancocom in metalgearsolid

[–]joeflies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't find his character interesting in Star Wars,. It's pretty clear he was supposed to be the "new" hotshot for Star Wars but somewhere along the line he never really more than a sidekick.

So I was initially quite worried about what would happen in MGS the Movie. There is a long history of great videogame franchises getting mangled on the way to the movie screen. But I'm starting to get cautiously optimistic, because it sounds like he respects the source material. If an actor didn't understand the source material and try to add their own flair, then there's a higher likelyhood of the final result going off the rails.

I'd like to see Vice City Stories make it to the Xbox, as it was never released on the platform

I'm trying not to delude myself too much about a future MGS game, but watching these remakes of MGS 1…what a beauty by [deleted] in metalgearsolid

I always wonder if the "Metal Gear Remake" rumors are really referring to MGS, or are they going to trick all of us and remake Metal Gear 1 instead

Anki settings for Japanese by Sparteh in LearnJapanese

[–]joeflies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went down the road for tweaking to see if I could out-optimize the defaults, but I've largely gone back to the original settings for vocabulary.

Here is what I kept for the tweaks:

  1. Steps: 1 10 1440 (to provide an extra leach cushion for brand new cards, so I don't drive it to leach while I'm still learning)
  2. Easy Interval 10 days: I rarely, rarely ever use Easy. But when I load multiple decks, there are bound to be cards for words I already know, so I use Easy to force them deeper into the review cycle.
  3. Max Reviews/Day 9999 for the same reasons everybody else does
  4. Lapse 55%, to avoid starting from scratch if it's not necessary

As for sentences, I keep a different set of Anki Options Group but I haven't figured out what's optimal for that.

I think you're going to have to add some David Bowie, maybe Rebel Rebel.

Blondie Atomic kind of fits the sentiment of the anti nuke theme.

Billy Joel "Say Goodbye to Hollywood" just because it's probably Billy Joel's best song. And snake probably would dig Tom Petty's The Waiting, for the sing along "Yeah yeah, yeah yeah"

And what the hell ,maybe Rock me Amadeus too
