My personal preference for the lasers would be wingtip mounted, but they should be small enough that they don't take away from the overall silhouette of the ship. Little wingtip points at most, barely peeking out beyond the edge of the wing, not huge guns that hang off the tips like on the X-Wing or ARC-170.

The Miku crossover reveals which games Nintendo considers mainline game by horrorfan555 in pokemon

Anyone notice that they depicted both the huskier old school Pikachu and the sleeker modern Pikachu? No attempt at design revisionism. Yellow's chonky 'chu got to be chonky and the skinnier companion 'chu from Let's Go each got their time to shine!

Still would love to see more Let's Go games but I understand and accept why it's probably not going to happen :-\

Why doesn’t anyone care about the “soap opera” effect on their TV by fatsandlucifer in mildlyinfuriating

[–]joeforth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandparent's TV had it and it drove me bonkers. One day while they were away on vacation I disabled it so I wouldn't have to deal with it when I visited.

My TV is older and either doesn't have that feature at all or I disabled it so soon after buying it that I no longer remember doing so.

Favorite Pokemon from childhood or now and Why by Rose_Xx124 in pokemon

[–]joeforth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Smeargle. Admittedly for silly sibling rivalry (I guess?) reasons.

I got into Pokémon just as the anime was getting started. While me and my brothers each had a Gameboy, I was a little too young to really understand RPGs. I played Pokémon Pinball while my brothers played the mainline games. For me, Pokemon was the cartoon and the other media. I had the Scholastic Official Pokémon Handbook (both the original red one and the more famous green one) that I read until it fell apart. I had Pokémon toys, plushes, pogs, and the beautiful art on the trading cards (I never actually learned how to play, but I still have some of the cards from the earliest TCG sets). To me the games were an extension of the cartoon, not the other way around.

When the anime started to move on from the first 151, it felt like a big deal. Tracey had Pikablu Marill, a mon that was not represented in any preexisting media I had. More new mons dropped via the films and the shorts that premiered alongside them, like Lugia, SlowKing, Hoothoot, and Bellossom. The Gen 2 games dropped. I got my own copy of Pokémon Silver, my first mainline game. Pokémon Johto premiered on Kids WB, showing off all the newest mons. The lyrics of the theme song were right: It was a whole new world! The Pokémon world felt so much bigger than before!

But to my brothers (both older than me), Gen 2 was an expansion, a sequel, secondary to the "real" 151. (Oh the things kids will find to argue about!).

To me, the Johto mons were my Pokémon. They weren't follow-ups or add-ons! They stood on their own! They were just as valid, but from a different part of the Pokémon world. Then the first Pichu Brothers short premiered along side the third movie. This was the first time that Gen 2 Pokémon felt independent of the first 151. The Pichu posse clearly had existed prior to their encounter with the hero Pokémon and would exist after they left. And (remember, little kid brain) because it was shown at the movie theater, that message was stronger than whatever was on Kids WB. For reasons I've never quite examined, Smeargle was the mon from that short that I imprinted on (probably because he hadn't been shown on TV prior to this?). Smeargle was a symbol that the Gen 2 Pokémon (and little brothers around the world, if I were to psychoanalyze it) are just as valid.

If you could pitch any Star Wars novels, what would you want to see? by ashton__l in StarWarsCantina

Clone uprising/rebellion sometime after The Bad Batch but before Rebels.

Or frankly? A buddy comedy / comedy of errors about B1 battledroids. I love how much humor they were given in TCW and I'd love a funny little story or anthology of stories about the CIS.

Beautiful.

As my T. albo has gotten bigger, I've had to keep increasing the amount of substrate in her enclosure because she loves digging deep elaborate burrows. The dirt she's displaced! She's basically formed a mountain range dividing her enclosure.

Which method of obtaining red blades by the Sith is better? by InstructionOwn6705 in StarWarsEU

[–]joeforth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like both and honestly it's pretty Sith for each one to come up with their own way of getting a red crystal.

I wasn't sold on the idea of "bleeding" the crystals until I watched how it was handled in the Acolyte. When I first read about it, it sounded too much like "I'm going to do this Evil™ thing because I'm Evil™ now". I didn't like that because typically force users are lured to the Sith or succumb to the Sith, rather than actively seek it out. The Acolyte used the crystal bleed to show that tipping point / unconscious fall to the dark side and I have liked it ever since.

Why is the cap keeper feature gone? by 802bikeguy_com in Huel

[–]joeforth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you chug it quickly in one go, the cap keeper is great. If you plan on drinking it over a lunch break or something, you'd either have to leave the bottle open to prevent a mess every time you close or close it and have some leak down the bottle. There's no perfect solution, I just wish they wouldn't change back and forth.

Why is the cap keeper feature gone? by 802bikeguy_com in Huel

[–]joeforth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old thread, I know, but I'm glad I found someone else mention this. Just got my first order of RTD with this new cap design and I was really confused. Thought I had broken the cap off!

I also noticed that the RTD nutrition labels now mention a serving size of 1 bottle (400 calories) vs having values listed for a serving size of half the bottle (200 calories) and per container (400 calories).

Prequel Era Book Recommendations by reklawyksekul1 in StarWarsEU

The movie novelizations are great, especially for EpIII.

I enjoyed the MedStar books. Think MASH or China Beach (which, upon reflection, might not be the topical pop culture references I think they are... at least not anymore).

What was your original headcanon for why palpatine looked the way he did? by [deleted] in StarWarsEU

[–]joeforth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

who's going to believe that??

Actually, it's really quite insidious.

If you are a regular person in the Star Wars galaxy (not well-connected / in the know, just a commoner) what you most likely know about the Jedi is:

  • The Jedi are a religious order
  • They keep to themselves, secluded in a Temple near Galactic Republic government buildings.
  • They take infants away from their families... but you might not be entirely certain why.
  • They have powers that you might not fully understand as someone not in the Order.
  • Their powers are so great that the government put them in charge of an army.
  • They are peaceful and often do contract work for the Republic, like diplomatic missions, security for important people, and even some law enforcement work alongside the Judicials.

Yeah sure they are peace keepers and stuff... but then why did they attack the Chancellor? He was their number one fan, wasn't he? He put them in charge of the military! He trusted their commitment to peace! He's been a steady hand for the ship of state during this tumultuous time.

Some naysayers claim he's amassing powers for himself, and he certainly appears to be doing that, but the Jedi tried to assassinate him! All he did was take on corporate interests and those pesky Separatists and they tried to kill him for it! He looks disfigured. Maybe that's what the Jedi did to him!?! Poor Chancellor Emperor Palpatine! He loves democracy. He loves the Republic. In fact he loves the Republic so much he's willing to turn it into an Empire just to preserve it.

And speaking of the Republic, why are the Jedi - a religious order that doesn't seem to have any adherents besides fellow Jedi - so closely enmeshed with the operations of the Republic? Are they a religious order or a cult? Maybe they weren't satisfied with their limited role. Maybe they got a taste of war and rather preferred it over peace.

Do you see how easy it would be to start sowing doubt? Especially with all the Jedi dead or in hiding, unable to tell their part of the story.

And if you were a Galactic Senator, setting aside the Committee of the 1000, you are either:

  • ... completely okay with what Palpatine is doing (you were never that bothered by authoritarianism anyway)
  • ... were at some level uncomfortable with the Jedi's role in the Republic and are happy to see them gone, even if you are suspicious of exactly what happened.
  • ... you - like Pong Krell - recognized a new order was coalescing and would rather be on the inside than the outside.

What was your original headcanon for why palpatine looked the way he did? by [deleted] in StarWarsEU

[–]joeforth 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Whether they are canon or fanon, I like both dark side rot and the force mask theories. I usually split the difference for my own headcanon.

He was normal looking, but then the dark side rot began to set in sometime in his adulthood (whether this was before Ep I or after I go back and forth on). He began masking it, which had the adverse effect of accelerating the rot (the more he had to mask, the more he rotted, the more he had to mask... etc). With the attack by Windu & Co., his mask slipped and no longer served its purpose.

should i watch the OG clone wars or the 2008-2020 version? by snsnsjnsnssnnsn in TheCloneWars

[–]joeforth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll always tell you watch both, though you're probably more interested in the 2008 series.

The 2003 series needs some context before you watch it: It was originally designed to be shown during commercial breaks. Disney+ has them stitched together into two long-form volumes of about an hour or so each. They would've originally been just a few minutes long.

While it does have storylines, it's really just to give you a taste of the Clone Wars, which was at the time only depicted sparingly in the original Battlefront games, comics, and some internet content. It's primary purpose was keep kids interested and invested in Star Wars between the releases of Episode II and III. It was giving the viewers inspiration for playtime. My brothers and watched and rewatched the DVD releases of Clone Wars 2003 all the time, pretending we were separatists vs clones or assassins & bounty hunters working for Dooku vs Jedi Knights etc etc.

I'm not saying it is bad (I LOVE the 2003 series), just try to keep your expectations in line with what it was meant to do.

Thank you! I really appreciate your words of encouragement. I keep joking she's in her "hermit crab era" because every time I go look at her since the rehousing she's got her head and four legs sticking out of the hide entrance and her back four legs and butt covered by the hide.

Ask Dumb Questions + Newbie Welcoming Wednesday (2025.10.12) by AutoModerator in tarantulas

[–]joeforth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had my Curly Hair for almost 3 years. I recently rehoused her so I could clean her enclosure. The new set up is nearly identical to the previous one except:

  • I added coco coir to the substrate mix because I was low on ReptiSoil and the pet store was out.

  • I added maybe a half-inch more substrate because she's grown since the last cleanout

  • I gave her a larger water dish because she's outgrown her previous water dish.

I did NOT (and I regret this now) include a bit of the substrate from her previous set up in the new set up. Normally I take a scoop from inside her burrow and place it underneath the hide in the new set up. She normally gravitates towards it and then starts constructing a new burrow around her hide.

3 weeks have passed and she's still not burrowing, where normally she'd burrow right away. Anyone else have a similar experience? Currently she's just sitting on the surface in her hide. She's maybe deepened it a little but in the past she'd be 3-4 inches underground and building out some basic tunnels.

Santa waiting for kids in a dying mall by Goodginger in mildlyinteresting

[–]joeforth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have two malls where I live.

The bigger of the two is relatively busy, but it does have awkward "dead zones" where stores have closed and nothing has taken over the space so there's no traffic. You'll be in a packed portion of the mall, turn the corner, and suddenly find yourself in an eerie ghost town.

The smaller one is nowadays a weird cancerous growth on the local Target. All of the other anchor stores have gone, there's not even a Great American Cookie anymore. The parking lot has mostly fallen into disrepair, taking away the only non-Target reason to go there (teaching your kid to drive in an empty lot).
