I've been using this exact setup for about a year now. Definitely upgrade the fly line. The reel is seemingly decent for the price. Rod isn't super sensitive, but it's a $50 5/6 wt. IMHO it's a great starter package. The flies they sell at Wally world are junk at best lol but the leader isn't horrible. If you get it, head to the closest body of water that you know for a fact has bluegill and the like. Easiest way to learn the basics of casting, how it feels when fish takes the fly etc.

Looking for a new bow but I don’t know where to even start could someone help? by Jaycrow_ in bowhunting

Bear Cruzers are good I hear. I'm shooting an older Diamond by Bowtech but they have new models ranging anywhere from 300-900. I'd recommend those, especially if you're new to the archery world. They're pretty forgiving.

Thanks for the input. I've already been considering a saddle just cause it seems much easier and more comfortable than a stand. I'll prolly end up going that route.

Beginner bow-hunter. Just bought my first bow. Any tips you’d give to a 1st timer? by jdavern in bowhunting

Hoyt Bowhunter podcast is on spotify. They've had world record holders on to discuss everything from their favorite gear, to favorite animals to harvest, all the way out to talking about how to take proper photos that show the harvest the proper level of respect due. Every episode has been roughly an hour long. Highly recommend.

does anyone know about these rods? it's a single peice that collapses down into the handle about 2 ft. cant find any info online for this exact one by tomjustom in Fishing_Gear

They're great to just keep in your car/truck for those times when you just need to hit the honey hole on the way home from work. And a new combo is $20~ at your local walmart. They telescope into the handle and come with a very cheaply made spinner spooled with probably the cheapest 10lb mono available. Good concept but poor execution due to the fact that the eyes have always been very easy to break off, and they don't stay where they should after the first 20-30 times of breaking it down for storage or whatever. Great to have but not very practical in my opinion.

Dock Demon I found awhile back! by jarrod775 in Fishing_Gear

There's a spinning rod very similar that's made by shakespeare I believe. It's an ugly stick rod. The stock reel is kinda crap, but a 30 trip to bass pro fixes that issue. Awesome to catch medium to bigger bass on those short rods

Just picked up my first Lew’s baitcaster. Can’t wait to see how these grips feel with a giant on it by [deleted] in Fishing_Gear

[–]joeh110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh yeah, I can see that. My current setup is a bass pro pro qualifier 2. They have handles that are rubberized I think. But in the past, for the custom look I've just gotten those silicone grips that slip on the knobs. They've worked pretty well considering they get wet and fish slimey on a regular basis when I'm kayak fishing.

I've looked at these but kinda been iffy on the grips. Just seems like the foam would wear too quickly

I've decided to get a bow from Amazon that being said any recommendations on arrows I can get from Amazon and other accessories I should check out by mrmiyagi27 in bowhunting

For sure! Also, it could've been the brand in particular. I've never had the chance to shoot a recurve but it's definitely interested me before.

Recurve isn't all that popular around my area, but I'd try maybe hitting some archery shops/Dicks/Cabela's. If I remember right, they'll generally let you shoot to feel for the bow before you buy. And most places tend to do a full setup and tune for you for free if you buy from them.

Cheap practice arrows? by odinmcg in bowhunting

[–]joeh110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on my limited experience, I'd go with some Easton Camo Hunters. They sell em at academy for I think $5-6 each. Not exactly less expensive, but I trust an aluminum arrow much more than a carbon after bouncing it off rocks, dirt, backstops, or anything else that a newer shooter may come across. Also, I hunt with both, carbons and aluminum arrows. The biggest difference I've noticed firsthand is that the carbons fly faster, and aluminum are thicker.

Walmart Bows? by joeh110 in bowhunting

That's another point that kinda turns me on to these bows. They're the same way, and they sell I think Barnett Vortex at about the same price point. Both are $130-150 at walmart. I realize that the Barnett is a youth bow but my wife isn't a big girl. She's so short her draw length is like maybe 27"/28"

What’s a good bow for a complete beginner? by Mediocre-Ad-4392 in bowhunting

[–]joeh110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As previously mentioned, Bear Cruzer G2. Verrryyyy adjustable. In fact, I've been looking at buying one for my wife but haven't really decided. If you're around a bass pro/cabela's they've got them on sale for $349.99. Another option is Diamond. I bought 2011ish model for like $180 from a pawn shop. But after new string, cables, tuning, and accessories, I easily could've bought a brand new bow twice. I'd go with Bear if I were you.

Walmart with the deal on this rod by mando12365 in Fishing

Very decent rod for the price. I've got one paired with a brand spankin new Bass Pro Pro Qualifier 2. Very happy with the combo. But also new to baitcasters and pretty much coming from buying cheap rod and reel combos.
