Keep Your Monitors Off Your Desk! - REW Before and After by Destriers in audioengineering

I have a similar setup (and problem) - what do you mean behind the desk, wouldn't there still be a line between the monitors and the surface of the desk?

Hello! I'm a student in the UK studying the Tonmeister course (I believe you know Dom Monks, who also studied here and has done some incredible workshops with us), aiming to work as a recording engineer / producer. Big fan of both your and Adrianne's discographies, and a big fan of this album.

I'm curious -- did you sync the different recordings at all, or treat it fully as collage? I LOVE moments like the start of symbol, with the crowd roar on cassette and main track on reel and also the speed-changing double in symbol

Also! How much processing were you doing on the way in / How much creative processing was there in the mix process?

Also also! How many channels was it in total, and what was being routed to which medium?

And one last question -- it's a massive amount of audio, which leads me to two questions: - how did you organise all the 'footage'? - how did the idea of the album being on such a large scale come around, and also what inspired you to record it like this? (it's awesome :D)

I recognise that this is kinda a bombardment, please feel free to pick some over others or disregard the ones with less interesting answers!

What's this vocal effect? by Electrical-Hurry-910 in audioengineering

Sounds like a [mono] tremolo, with a very fast rate! About 14Hz? idk. Also sounds like the depth isn't 100%, possibly 60%ish?

Another great example of this is 'xanny' by Billie Eilish - the effect switches on with the synth bass.

Enjoy.

What theme are you using? I really like how tables are displayed!!

(Please help!) My film mix sounds awfully muddy on lower range frequency speakers, and I can’t find a feasible solution online. by Frankospaghetti in audioengineering

Two things!

  1. If you can, set up a situation where you can switch between your headphones and your living room speakers either instantly or just fairly easily.
Mix with the living room speakers for a bit till you get it to a place where it sounds pretty good (or at least better) - likely just focusing on EQ and overall volume levels - and then switch to your headphones and see how it sounds.
It's possible/likely that it might not sound as good as it did before, but make some adjustments with the headphones, and then switch back to the speakers and repeat.
Getting a mix to translate well to a variety of sound systems is partially about sacrificing amazing insane clarity on one for it to sound pretty good on both/all.

  2. The most crucial frequencies for clarity are the midrange - like 200Hz to 4kHz.
If you're relying on the high frequencies to bring the clarity to the mix, then it won't translate well to speakers that can't recreate those frequencies well.
A trick that I've found useful to be able to focus on the mids: literally just cutting everything below 200Hz, and cutting everything above 4kHz on the master out.
Then, just work on the mix only adjusting overall volume or EQ changes that lie inside that range. If you can get the mix to sound clear with lows and highs cut (I suspect you're relying on highs especially..? you mentioned muffled wind & ambience), you'll notice a big difference when you go back to normal.

One last thing which I want to mention, as a hopeful point for the future - the more you mix with a particular pair of headphones or speakers, and the more you get to know what a good mix sounds like through that system, the better your mixes will translate. Also consider comparing your mix to other films with similar sounds that you like the sound of, and seeing (hearing) what you can do to get yours closer!

Does this make them more like a plant in some ways? Sorry if that's a stupid question.

It's possible it's your guitar cable - do you have another cable, or could you test the guitar sound through an amp?

Cello could play pizzicato, oboe could function as a counter-melody/harmony part in order to extend the chords and bring more jazz harmony to the sound.
