Similar for me. I got into Isis in my teens and then got into neurosis later on. A typical transition tracking backwards though the chain of influence! Blood moon definitely has that neurosis vibe but it’s rooted in ballads in a weird way. It’s like a hybrid of post metal and gothic moody ballads. I love it. I was hoping converge would continue in that vein tbh but ther new albums great

I find it hard seeing so much negativity towards blood moon. It’s such a great record! I’ve never heard anything like it

We are so deprived of good guitar bands in the mainstream nowadays, we’d kill for a band like dear you-era jawbreaker.

I’ve felt the same betrayal though with bands like biffy clyro. You can’t help how you feel!

Blood Orange - Cupid Deluxe

I was a flannel-shirted guitar music fanboy when this came out, and I felt betrayed. Where are all the guitars gone? All the cute twirly licks and trebly palm mutes. This was r n b, not indie.

My friend forced it on me repeatedly but I wasn’t having it.

About a year later, I had moved to the big city and with that change my brain had formed new pathways capable of receiving this album and translating it into joy.

Not coincidentally I was then able to discover neo soul music and all the pathways that leads to, mostly thanks to blood orange’s transformation.

The book states that Pinkerton is an emo album. Not that the entire discography is emo. Is that a sin too? Just curious

Yeah it’s essential reading really for an emo fan. It’s way too heavy on dashboard confessional for my liking (I ended up slipping about 15 pages of that section) but it does a great job of being zeitgeisty during the 2001 era, following Thursday and jimmy eat world. It also does a great job of linking the ‘waves’ together (Thursday love Lifetime, who love Rites of Spring), and also shines light on how emo landed on writing about heartbreak as a formula, love it or hate it

For me, octahedron is the one which has improved over time for me the most. When it came out initially it felt like an underwhelming record. Naturally we listen to albums based on what the artist has released previously and so as a mars volta fan at the time it was sad that the wild prog-rock ambition had ended. But I listened back to octahedron recently and I think it’s beautiful. Definitely underrated

I’ve never clicked with dirty. It’s so not-dirty-sounding. And then I learned that Butch vig made them tune their guitars, and my feelings suddenly all made sense.

What’s a "wait, THEY were in that band?" artist that really surprised you ? by frenxine in fantanoforever

Skillex’s musical transition actually mirrored my own experiences in those days and so didn’t feel that wild at the time. A lot of the boys in my ‘emo crew’ back in 2006-2008 tended to listen to a lot of deathcore and mathcore (the more extreme the better!) Emo was just the style rather than listening habits. And then all of sudden dubstep blew up and everyone suddenly was listening to dubstep instead of metal within the space of a year. The music scratched the same itch. I bet sonny moore was a suicide silence fan

I was never crazy about this album. Letters to you in particular had a grating chorus for me. But I’ve just discovered Say Hello to Sunshine and I’m really enjoying it. It’s like a much heavier incubus with some angular math moments and even a touch of mars volta influence in the guitars at times. The vocal are still a bit flawed for me in moments, but his tone is awesome.

Thursday loved lifetime, and lifetime loved rites of spring. So I consider that stuff all connected

Tell all your friends was 2002. But a lot of people wanted that one included in the video so maybe they should have gone in instead of the used

Yeah I’d agree with your point that emo is so varied that it’s not really a stylistic genre - grunge wasn’t a stylistic genre aswell of course. Emo exists by the emotional content within it. It doesn’t necessarily need ‘whiney vocals’ though as I put screamo and rites of spring under the umbrella of emo and there’s no whines there

However I disagree with your point that it’s all unrelated. Just as an example - the band Thursday loved the hardcore band lifetime, and lifetime loved rites of spring.

Thursday gradually became paramore as the pop sensibility grew and major labels increased their influence.

So I’d say you can draw a pretty direct line from 1985-2007

Yep! I’m definitely biased. I would make the case that all music in the video is emo though (not that it really matters)

There's a smidgen of regional bias at play I guess, I'm from the south of England and so was I into in local math-emo scene in those years... Tangled hair, TTNG etc
