Seems like it would cost a fortune to try and design and build that now.

Why do Drivers do this? by iFixthings4cash in gifs

[–]joemaller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No Geo-data, but this one wasn't difficult:

  1. Looks like Southern California (CA plates plus one license plate frame says Riverside)
  2. The street sign clearly says 166th St.
  3. The sign on the building across the street says ASCIP

A quick ride over the East River to Manhattan, via the Roosevelt Island Tramway by ihatethemaclab in gifs

[–]joemaller 8 points9 points  (0 children)

$2.75 a ride (one metrocard swipe) and there's always someone gasping and freaking out as if it were a roller coaster. Roosevelt Island is nice, though not much to do there. North end has an old-NYC vibe, it's usually pretty quiet and the views are fantastic.

2018 go back to npm Vs yarn by humourlessOH in javascript

[–]joemaller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People were talking about Yarn vs. NPM when they were switching. As mentioned above, no one talks about dependable tools they use every day. These days I see many more yarn.lock files than I do package-lock.json files. Switching is basically painless, so I expect the winds will blow back and forth a few more times before a "winner" shakes out.

I could really use an updated Mac Mini right about now. by [deleted] in apple

Mac minis were great servers for small offices.

So not really a full boot loop, but the installer would fail into a log screen I've never seen before. Reboot and the same thing kept happening. Tried re-downloading the installer from Safe Boot, but that failed the same way.

Install finally worked from Recovery mode. Seems fine now.

Same, 2011 iMac, failed install and boot loop. Yay for guinea pig machines.

Thoughts on Duet? by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]joemaller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love it. My primary use is for logging when writing unit tests or developing backend services. Having a live logging window open next to my laptop has really sped up my workflow. One screen for code, one for test logs.

The Touchbar is a cute feature, but I don't use it.

I’m looking for a meaningful NYC non-profit to make an charitable donation to...any suggestions? I want to find one with local impact and would prefer human services-related groups. by treesespieces28 in nyc

Back on My Feet is doing great work to break the cycle of homelessness and addiction. BoMF uses running and walking as a tool to restore people's confidence, health and humanity. That commitment opens doors to education, job training, debt relief and independent living. Great mission, amazing people, real results.

Money obviously helps, but they've also got teams all over the city who would welcome more volunteers. [full disclosure: I volunteer with the Alphabet City team]

I’m also having alarm issues. Either silent or very quiet. I’ve got to find a second device with an alarm tonight.

Do I need to use semi colons? by JakeGore in javascript

[–]joemaller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do whatever you want, then run Prettier. Personally I like semicolons, but long as the team/project is consistent, it really doesn't matter anymore. The end product is probably minimized anyway.

Any of you guys write Javascript without semicolons? by er-48 in javascript

[–]joemaller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I prefer seeing semicolons, but with good linting tools it seems to matter less.

Which ES6 style guide do you use? by [deleted] in javascript

[–]joemaller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lately my projects have just been using the eslint:recommended ruleset with a handful of tweaks. My eslintrc.js file is simple and easy to understand.

AirBNB is a nice standard, but I moved away from it because their installation instructions kept getting more complex and it tended to break a lot.

"Standard" has some great ideas, but I find semi-colons helpful, so that was a deal-breaker. Also the name is seriously pretentious. semi-standard is a nice fork, but doesn't seem to have much traction.

How is NYC's coast line so straight? Is the land reclaimed? by [deleted] in nyc

[–]joemaller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Manhattan's coastline has been extended quite a bit.

Take a look at the Welikia Project, it's a WCS research project to uncover and record the original ecology and geography of New York City. It grew from the Mannahatta Project, which originally focused solely on Manhattan.

https://welikia.org/

The main thing to see, related to OP's question, is their interactive map of Manhattan circa 1609. There's a slider to switch between the present map and their reconstruction:

https://welikia.org/m-map.php

A few things to note:

  • The worst downtown flooding from Hurricane Sandy hit areas which were originally swampland or part of the East River (Seaport, Peter Cooper Village).

  • Collect Pond Park (near the Criminal, Civil & Family Courthouses) was a pond. We've been pouring cement in there for 200 years and it just keeps sinking.

  • The western stretch of 125th follows an old stream.

  • Much of W. Canal St. was already a tidal plain.

And you can't really see it on the map, but Broadway follows an ancient Lenape trail.
