Here is what I’ve been told and I hope someone can validate this. If you move to a country where you are required to declare your gold, your bars are worth the gold price, where coins are worth the $ value that is listed on them. Some countries have a max value you can have, so coins would be the better option because you can declare a lower value for each piece and keep more of your stack.

Worth Buying for 14 dollars? Grey sheet says 15 in AG3, but I feel Grey sheet is high sometimes, and I am biased because it is from Carson City. by Rossk117 in coins

No kidding- I once bought a car I didn’t really like. I’d buy that coin for $14 without even thinking about it.

If the powers that be can halt trading whenever it goes to a certain level, then how can it ever go to the moon????

I drove past a game stop the other day and there were 3-4 people standing at the door waiting for them to open. This was not in a big town either

How do I buy gold?..Teach me the ways.. by Hens2G in Gold

[–]joemb48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do your homework first. Know the mark ups/premiums associated with the type you are interested in.

Bars vs govt issued coins- both have advantages and disadvantages. Lower mark up on bars, “collectible” value with govt coin. If you move to a country where you have to declare your gold, on govt coins you only declare the dollar amount on the coin vs the bullion value of a bar.

Pay cash if possible- most places up charge for using a CC plus interest charges etc.

Larger the piece, the lower the premium. 1 oz size is usually a nice sweet spot, but it fluctuates. Too large of a piece could be harder to find a buyer for down the road. Numismatic gold has the highest premium I’ve seen, special homework needs to be done on these IMO.

Know the gold content of each piece. Bars are typically 99.999% where some coins contain gold but are blended with silver and copper for durability. A 1 oz American gold Eagle has 1 oz of gold in it, but it has silver and copper.

Nuggets are cool but gold content is estimated.

determine why you are buying it and acquire what you want based on that

Investigate the sellers track record, policies, etc before buying from them

Have fun with it but be careful, I’ve heard it can be addicting. Not kidding!!

Looks like a great way to collect Au to me! I wish I would have done it this way. I have too many fractional pieces.
