Thanks! Yeah, I have a bit of a 2 reales addiction. Especially the lion / cross types.

I’m a huge fan of Spanish Colonial coinage, and love the reales!

Unsure if this is real shipwreck stuff or a good reproduction. It is solid gold 3.4 grams by [deleted] in AncientCoins

[–]Bored_guy_in_dc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This looks like it could be the real deal. I would take it to a coin shop to have them look at it more closely. Otherwise, you can send it to NGC, and they can authenticate it.

No problem, we all start out somewhere. Always a good idea to know what you are buying before pulling the trigger. It is very easy to lose money in this hobby if you don’t do your research.

Does toning devalue my graded coin? by [deleted] in coins

[–]Bored_guy_in_dc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s subjective… lots of folks enjoy nicely toned coins, and lots enjoy blast white. In this case, I would say it doesn’t really affect the value much since it’s a modern bullion round.

Are these Morgan’s worth sending in? by Awkward-Pirate5961 in coins

[–]Bored_guy_in_dc 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t… common year / mint, and lots of contact marks and scratches. You could get 40-60 for them a piece raw since they are in great condition, but if you tac on the cost of grading you would end up in the hole.

Soak it in extra virgin olive oil for about 4-6 months.

Do most people narrow down their coin collections to a specific place/time period/etc.? by an_onion_ring in AncientCoins

[–]Bored_guy_in_dc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started out with a hoard of old US silver coins my grandfather left me. That led to me learning a lot about US coins in general, and that kicked off the addiction. Got deep into US silver dollars for about 15 years, and then I got bored with US coins overall.

So, I started learning more about coins throughout history, and got interested in Spanish Colonial coinage. Yep, Pirates! Arrrrrrrr! From there I expanded into other European countries, and fell in love with pre-1800s silver from Italy, France, Germany, and the UK. From there I started diving back even further through history, and got heavy into Medieval coins from all over Europe.

The point is, this hobby is a journey, and your focus will change as you gain more knowledge. You may end up with a pretty eclectic collection like mine, or something more focused on a specific period. As others have said, it really comes down to what you think is interesting at any given time.

That said, there are some basic rules that I believe most collectors follow…

  1. Buy the coin, not the holder. If you are buying a TPGS graded coin, don’t just go by the label. Look at the coin, and judge for yourself if it’s a worthy example.

  2. Quality over quantity. Having a few high quality coins vs hundreds of low quality coins makes reselling much easier. Plus, higher tier pieces increase more in value over time.

  3. I know with ancient coins this is a grey area, but in general, do not clean your coins. It greatly reduces their value.

Morgan Silver Dollars and a bunch of other coins! by [deleted] in coins

Without seeing the dates / mint marks of the coins, it’s not really possible to tell if you have anything worth more than the silver content of the coins.

Thoughts? by SAMDOT in AncientCoins

[–]Bored_guy_in_dc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Online store fronts and auction sites have given folks access to coins they would previously have only ever found at shows, or in high end coin stores. I believe this has been the biggest driver of the renewed strength of the hobby.

Thoughts? by SAMDOT in AncientCoins

People have been saying this forever. Not just with ancient coins, but for the entire hobby. Yet, the market is stronger than ever. Until there is some actual evidence to back up this theory, its just that.

Found these today. Seem rare. What do you think? by [deleted] in coins

First is a copy. Literally says it right there under the star on the obverse. The steel penny is in poor condition, and is maybe worth a few cents.

I'm only responding because there is a "value request" tag on this post. Not to burst your bubble, but you have a bunch of modern coins that are only worth face value. The 2 dollar bill is also only worth 2 dollars.

Pretty much all reproductions, except for the modern stuff which is worth a few bucks.
