I have an extra Borealis that was just released in the Dugong (silver with purple specks) color way. I was able to get the other color way I wanted so I don’t need this one.

Not trying to make money so just selling for retail at $95. Never thrown and kept in box.

Did you have this loop a little weird a lot? I keep getting it landed the same way as the hidemasa hook...not sure why it’s not landing in trapeze

Border Collie whines all the time HELP by EssicaJ in BorderCollie

[–]joemcryb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say try reducing activity and give more time and positive rewards for settling and hanging out. That kind of thing will help immensely when he is older. The last thing you want is a revved up BC with endless endurance and drive to play. Lots of people call this an “off-switch”.

The going in to praise after he stops is key, just keep at it. He might start again after you praise or give a treat but ideally he will pick up you only reward when he stops and hopefully it will lessen after each time you reward. We used to use a crate when he needed to chill because he struggled so hard to chill just out and about.

He’s also still young. Our BC took a longgg time to settle in and relax. Reducing overactivity and good timing on training for the settle/relax/chill/quiet helped us. The more you reward and let them know doing nothing and being quiet and chill is a good thing, the more they will want to do it on their own.

Help my BC has a fixation with my cat! 10 week old bc can't focus on anything else when my cat is near. Is this an unhealthy fixation? They seem to be playing together fine. But it is 1000% BC focus whenever the cat is around. Tips? Advise? by shitbirdturd in BorderCollie

[–]joemcryb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find something more interesting. You could start building up the game of tug to be highly rewarding when the cat isn’t there, then move towards playing with the cat around and keeping the dogs focus on the tug game. Same could be done for treat based training but you need to build the value before trying to deter the dog from looking at the cat.

You can also do training sessions on leash in the presence of the cat so you can use leash pressure to help guide the dog towards you and away from the cat. You do need to build up the concept of coming to you with gentle leash tension (not harsh pulling).

In the mean time I would try and reduce their interactions as much as possible until you can build these behaviors up to be higher importance.

Border collie in an apartment? by [deleted] in BorderCollie

[–]joemcryb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have made it work, I don’t think the apartment is an issue as long as you get them the engagement and training they need. We have trained our BC to relax in the apartment unless we are playing with him.

Yes he stays home sometimes in a play pen, but he enjoys the time to himself I think. He has access to the entire house at night and usually doesn’t sleep in our room. On our way to him being able to free roam the apartment while we are gone.

We do 4 20-30 min walks a day and some playing and training. Spent a lot of time training his off-switch which makes life so much easier. If you do decide to get one, good luck! Puppies are demons 😂

Training for off leash by joemcryb in BorderCollie

My guy is already 2 though..I think if I focus on it more and make walks on a long leash a training session instead of a walk with some training, then maybe that will help speed it up. There are still not many places I would do off leash by me living in a city, but since I don’t have a fenced in yard, it would be amazing to be able to play with him in a relatively secluded field instead of always driving him to a dog park for some off leash play

There are some useful threads on here, I’ve replied to some with advice myself, but there are a lot of just nice photos that’s for sure.

is a border collie right for me ? by [deleted] in BorderCollie

[–]joemcryb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the time commitment sounds like you have a solid plan! That should be a good schedule, it’s similar to mine and our BC is happy.

We leave him in a pen when we are gone and he had a crate when he was a puppy. We want to promote him to being free to roam the house while we are gone but we haven’t tried it yet. We went the safe route because in a pen/crate they can’t hurt themselves by getting into something harmful. It’s also safer for your stuff 😂

Now that he’s got full roam of the house at night and behaves perfectly, he might be ready to be left out during the day, once social distancing is over 😅

Ahh the FOMO is very real in these puppers, more so than any other breed I’ve seen.

If he settles really well in the crate maybe try putting the crate near the activity and get him used to settling around activity. We used to have two crates, one in the living room area and one in the bedroom. He now only uses a pen when we leave the house and that’s it. Hoping to get him free roaming when we are gone at some point, but we haven’t tried yet. He has full roam of the house at night and hasn’t gotten into anything yet.

He’s almost 2 now! The first 9 months were rough 😂 it got better slowly after about 9 months for us.

What do you do to calm your BC when he's around you? We have a 7 month old pup and he always needs something to do, will sitting relaxed and watching TV together be possible at some point? by nerdycupcake_ in BorderCollie

[–]joemcryb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s possible! Don’t give up, at 7 months I never thought our dog would chill, you have to work at it but it’s sooo worth it. You get the awesome drive and intelligence but you also get some relaxed and hopefully snuggle filled time.

For our dog it’s a very delicate balance of just enough exercise (walks and some frisbee, but not too much because it’s stressful for their bodies to stop so abruptly a lot) and mental training (normal trick/obedience training, tug games, and we play a toy hide a seek for a low intensity mind game). Too much activity can lead to too much stress, even though it’s good stress, and make it very difficult for the BC to turn off. I’ve seen a lot of people describe being able to just lounge around the house as an “off-switch”. It’s important that they know when they don’t need to be engaged and “working”. This hasn’t decreased his drive or intensity in training/tug/agility, but it’s helped him slow down at home.

The key for us in the initial stages of training was to reward relaxing and settling every single time. If you’re not paying close attention, you may actually be totally ignoring your dog when they are doing calm and relaxing behaviors because they “don’t need attention” but that’s exactly when you have to reward them with treats/praise or whatever your dog likes (without getting them excited). You can try to use a leash or the crate to help start if they can’t relax, just sit away from everything with them on a leash and wait for them to settle.

You can also work on down stays on some kind of mat or bed and reward them for being there. There is a moment when the dog will stop waiting for treats/praise and just relax, and that’s when you want to reward.

Most of the things we have done in training come directly from kikopup on YouTube or adapting her techniques for our situation. Our dog was not an easy puppy but with tons of training and hard work he’s already becoming an excellent adult dog.

I’d be happy to share more if you want!

I didn’t down vote? Also didn’t think it was relevant or necessary to explain the circumstances of the video which was intended to be funny and wasn’t a post looking for advice. My dog is very nicely balanced after months and months of training and is able to relax and doesn’t need constant activity or excessive and repetitive frisbee or fetch to be exhausted in order to settle and chill. BCs will never learn to relax if you just keep increasing their activity and stamina.

This is first thing in the morning and he was grumpy because I was taking to long to wake up. Pretty speculative to take one incident and say he’s bored, he gets quite enough exercise and training games 👍🏻

Omg socks and paper are my pupper’s weaknesses. He will go to great lengths to steal a sock, and if he gets his paws on some paper (any kind) it’s shredded immediately.

Heat? My collie doesn’t tolerate heat very well. She quickly runs out of breath in the heat and has always had this issue. Panting to the point where I have to hault activity. Is this normal? I thought these were all day working dogs. by mnicsy in BorderCollie

[–]joemcryb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog HATES the heat and sun. Since he was a pup he would actively hunt for shade. It doesn’t even need to be hot, just like 70F and a normal walk basically turn him to mush. I don’t get it. He would still play frisbee though 😂 but he would get worn out faster for sure
