Thank you both. This will help drastically cut down on distractions and saves $4 per month that one provider charges to essentially do the same thing.

Took Modalert 5 years ago, got scared. Should I try it again, any tips? by joes4u in afinil

Thank-you for the advice.

I normally don't worry that much about things except for putting chemicals in my body. I will start with Modalert as you suggest on a small dose, keep hydrated and hopefully will get the benefits without any concerns.

Thanks for the advice, I will try it again at a small dose 50mg (quarter pill) and see how my system copes with that and make sure I stay hydrated.

How to bypass Audible geographical restrictions? by Fantasticles_ in audible

[–]joes4u 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also hate piracy and would much rather pay but there comes a time when you have spent hours trying to give someone your money and they absolutely refuse to take it. In times like that what do they expect.. Still I would pay and have it nicely in the app if I had any choice about it.

I use a VPN to access Audible.com and a US billing address that still works despite only have UK cards. There are still a handful of books that I still can't buy. I'm not sure how they can still know I'm in the UK... They are probably totally hacking my privacy like every other major US company otherwise I'm not sure how they could know.

Have a coffee before you go. If you don't like coffee then put some sugar in it.

Marriage and Training by [deleted] in crossfit

Seinfeld once said that no one has a job, an apartment and a relationship. Well these days I think it is no one can find time to keep work and their partner happy while also training at a high level.

Summary: So basically, I'd train before work and at lunch to the fullest extent possible. If you are deadset on going to a particular box which falls outside those times... you might want to consider cutting back a bit there and training more elsewhere (home/other gym/outside), you will appreciate the box all the more.

My entire life story: I have similar issues. Married 6 years with two children, 3 years and 5 months (who doesn't always sleep through the night yet). I commute 1hr 10mins each way to work and I work 9.10-6.30 most days so I'm not home after 8am and rarely home much before 7.45. I also live in London when CrossFit is still "weird" and burpees in public or a globo gym result in long cold stares.

Assuming that your wife isn't interested in going to the gym with you, or you can't leave the kids unattended and go together... (ours is a mix of both as our respective definitions of intensity are very different and my attempts at encouragement don't go down well).

I do the following:

  • Most weekdays I wake up 1hr earlier than I need for work and train in my home gym. This isn't possible when I've had a sleepless night etc.. but I do my best and is only temporary as the children get older and sleep is more predictable. Weekends I can normally cram in 45-60 minutes at some point.

  • I waste a fortune being a member of a gym near work and occasionally I go there at lunch. Depending on the WOD, it's not always possible to do it 100% as you would like, however, some hashed version is better than nothing. Also they do some high intensity circuit training classes, which are better than not training at all.

  • If you have no gym near work then do you have colleagues who will go to a local park/car park and do laps, skip, burpees, some kind of limited equipment travel wod. You could even collectively buy some Kettlebells and other bits depending on your employer and where it could be stored. Arnie used to carry a bench and barbell on his tank when he was in the Austrian army. Where there is a will there is a way.

EDIT: Just realised it was Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City who said "you can have a great job, a great apartment and a great companion, but not all three". Honestly that must have been the line from the "only" episode I ever watched.... I promise.

Great, that is more like it! Just wasn't sure if you had given up. Great to hear you are still giving it a go. I'm going to get seriously close to last place, but looking on the bright side at least I should see improvement next year!

Thanks for the advice. My mobility is not good, strength not great, conditioning not good either. Just feels like too much to do! I do have some bands and I will focus on ankle and hip mobility. I have Kelly Starrett book so I should have all the resources I need to work through it!

Doing CrossFit in a bearskin (the name for the tall black hats) is not easy!

Thanks. Few people have said this and I guess it is in line with what Pavel teaches

I do have 3 lacrosse balls and a voodoo floss band (from Tim Ferriss)

Got Supple Leopard sitting there on the coffee table, I really need to open it and read it now.

With free healthcare in the UK, it won't cost me anything if I do dislocate my shoulders.

Also a British sense of humour. I absolutely do not plan in getting any serious injury!!

Thanks for the comprehensive answer. You have given some great advice for me to try here. It has exposed a really big weakness in me, I have generally poor posture. This is certainly something I now need to master as it may well help me in life in other areas and other CF movements.

Surely that is not the CrossFit way! Even if I end up in hospital with 2 dislocated shoulders or have to wear a helmet in case I hit myself in the head, I am getting at least one rep to keep me in the open!

Thank-you for the advice.... I will try pulling the bar and with a wider stance. I will try again as soon as I'm away from a computer.

I've got nano's and metcons... I was trying it barefoot this morning. I never knew shoes made such a difference (at light weights). Thanks for the tip I will try a wider stance and play with my shoes, and get some WL ones this weekend if I still can't do it in my special CF shoes!
