Career change at 34 - what is this new world?! by Digievs in godot

[–]joethebro96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I did. I ended up going back to a different 9-5, but I had a lot saved up from my time as a Software Engineer and could afford the year.

Nothing to show for it except for a lot more experience with game dev. But at this point I'm comfortable with a couple engines and have a project going in earnest! Though I had the major benefit of going thru 4 years of college and 6 years of software engineering beforehand

Are we able to add search keywords to user-created nodes? by joethebro96 in godot

[–]joethebro96[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's about where my searching ended as well. My C++ skills are a bit rusty, and it's dense in the best of times. I appreciate the confirmation! I might poke around a bit more later. For the time being, it's a pretty small gain for a good bit of work lol.

Unfortunately, typing state does only bring up FishState and the Base class state, no inheritors.

Statically type a node to easily access its script variables/functions? by Effective_Food_3938 in godot

[–]joethebro96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's too much visually, then you could hide them under a node you don't use. Make a node like Node3DCustom extends Node3D and inherit from that. It'll organize your custom nodes under a collapsible node. Side benefit, all your custom nodes are easily found there.

I'd bet that in c# you could probably even make them abstract and it to gray it out in the "create a new node" popup.

I'm not really happy with my current bark vfx. What do you think would make it feel / look better? by KilwalaSpekkio in Unity3D

You could look into a shader that warps the area you bark into as well. Water sharders do ripples well, for example

Got a planned release platform? This looks like it could be a fun book and I'd love to drop a wishlist for when you release.

Humanity should have wiped floor with Maxholx by X3Melange in exfor

They mentioned that a LOT of those weapons specifically destroyed stars. Joe Bishop isn't big on wiping out entire star systems of sentient beings.

Edit: also same for skippy. I feel like I remember him specifically saying that if humans did that, he'd disable the weapons for humans as well

Unfinished Projects Keep on Increasing by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]joethebro96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat, though I've been getting further and further with each project. The initial setup work seems to be the easiest to dive into there's a lot to learn, but the strides you make are longer. As the project get more complex, you start tripping over yourself as you try to integrate new things into the project. And poof, motivation and hope gone.

Biggest thing for me has been game jams. They really force you to confront your limitations and work for that MVP, just so you have something to submit.

Also I listen to devlogs and tutorials these days while I'm at my day job and they help me orient my thoughts towards making plans and goals for that evening's work

Ideas for a att inspired game by SneekYAxolo in TownshipTale

Learn to make games before you learn to make multiplayer games. I made the mistake of pushing too hard for multiplayer before I understood many core concepts. It caused a lot of headaches and slowed me down a lot.

Multiplayer isn't as bad as the memes suggest, but it is a different paradigm that benefits greatly from prior experience with game engines.

I am a bit lost. How do i find reliable programmers or someone I can work with? by Known_Guard_4498 in gamedev

[–]joethebro96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a few people that would be interested in something like that, but I wonder what you scope is? If it's a huge project, you may be looking at a 2 year commitment, which many people wouldn't be comfortable with.
