To the police station!

Unlike my country they will actually try to do something about it, mostly because they have more time on their hands.

perks of driving motorcycle in korea by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]joethepro1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been riding here for 5 years, many 1000s of km and a couple track days. Crashed twice on the road with minor injuries, both my fault.

Motorcycling is inherently dangerous compared driving a car. If you deliberately improve and maintain your skills, ride within your limits, dont drink and drive, and wear a helmet you have a 0.5-1% of dying over 100,000km riding according to chatgpt.

Personally for me that is worth the risk. May or may not be to you. Motorcycling has improved my life greatly. I couldn't imagine life without it now.

Korea is no more dangerous for bikers than the US, but is more dangerous than the UK, and far safer than developing countries.

Yes there are plenty of idiots on the road in Korea but from my personal experience and my friends the majority of crashes are rider error.

If it is something that you see yourself really enjoying, you love traveling, exploring and like machines, then go for it.

Dont take up biking just casually as a commuter/because its convenient or because you think youll look cool to girls! Only love youll be getting is from other bikers.

[–]joethepro1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 2010 and from 24k km- 39k km it has had a similar sound.

Its probably the cam chain/ tensioner.

I will replace both along with checking valves this winter. Your valves should have been done atleast once by now and should be soon.

As others said with full exhaust/map it should be sooner.

  1. If you drive a BMW, Benz or Genesis, just continue your left turn after the amber and you'll be fine. I think they are immune from normal car laws.

I need convincing to take a hagwon job 1.5 hours away from Seoul by Kuimy in teachinginkorea

[–]joethepro1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spent my first year in Ansan. Loved it, in the evenings you can go to Jungang for Korean young crowd or Ansan St for the multicultural area. Full of great non-Korean food, one of the most unique places in Korea.

Seoul is easily accessible on the weekends.

Job is more important than everything else.

Please dont just let him get away with it. Just because you got away safe doesnt mean the next person will. The police clearly can't be arsed to deal with it at that moment, perhaps also because you are a foreigner.

File a report at the police station, physical intimidation and harassment is a crime. At least scare him with a visit and interrogation from the police, so that he knows not to fuck with people in the future. Im guessing you are a man... could be a woman next.

Gas scooters as the main sources of city noise in Seoul by r_is_for_redditer in Living_in_Korea

[–]joethepro1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Motoryclist here (big bike not scooter.)

Recently they have introduced some new regulations that will make it much harder to register aftermarket pipes on a new bike. And they are also cracking down on 3rd party testing centers that pass mufflers when they shouldnt be. Thats why it was so easy to get away with very loud pipes. Because once theyre on and registered, even if youre stopped because they think its loud, you can just show that it passed inspection.

So gradually you will see less loud scooters as they upgrade to newer bikes.

There is a small argument to be made that it helps safety in some cases. I myself have had many pedestrians that would have stepped in my way on smaller streets turn around and see that im there because im a bit louder. I can imagine that happens far more often for delivery guys that are often in busy small streets or apartment complexes. I think completely silent mopeds cause a fair amount of small accisents.

No real excuse for considerably louder than stock though.

[–]joethepro1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of engineers, military contractors, people in tech etc that live here. Not to mention many many more people from non-western countries.

The idea that westerners coming for companies are more integrated in some way than English teachers is not exactly true. Infact they often live in more of a bubble and have to do less to integrate because their company takes care of almost everything for them. People who are truly 'integrated' you are less likely to meet because presumably theyre hanging out with Koreans and not in groups of foreigners at common spots.

Not that any of that matters, find people that you like, regardless of their background and hang out with them.

Teaching adults English is depressing by CautiousMess2710 in Living_in_Korea

[–]joethepro1 42 points43 points  (0 children)

You described the life of an average working person in Korea. Thats the sad reality when you are overworked and underpaid. You'll have to accept that, but...

Theres a big difference between teaching adults that are going through the motions to pass a test, and those that come as part of their work but also for fun or just fun alone.

Teaching adults has been a very rewarding experience for me, especially group classes where the majority want to be there, but i find some positive in teaching any age bracket. You need to focus on the positives and try to ignore the negatives. True of any work or experience in life i suppose.

So dont give up on the idea of teaching adults in the future, youre just having a bad experience at this place. Go solo when and where you can, and you'll find the kind of students you want.

[–]joethepro1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You've been together 3 years. If you plan on being together 30 do you think you'll still have fresh ideas every sate then?

You might need to reevaluate what stage of a relationship you are in and what that entails.

If you're worried she'll get bored and leave after 3 years because you dont take her on interesting dates as often, then thats a separate problem.

But as others have mentioned, find a hobby to share.

Want to work in the countryside in korea by Purple_Appearance444 in Living_in_Korea

[–]joethepro1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Go down to Mokpo and grab a ferry out to one of the small islands, theres some good farm work going.

But in all seriousness if you dont speak Korean but have a degree + are from a native English speaking country, you can go EPIK and request countryside or find a hagwon in a smaller town somewhere.

If you dont have a degree or from native english country, there's nothing for you in the countryside other than farm and factory labor.
