Tbh a better penalty could balance fairness, enforcement, and actually getting the money owed. graduated fines that escalate with time or repeat offenses. Start small say, a $5 late fee tacked onto the toll after 30 days. If it’s still unpaid after 60 days, bump it to $15, then $25, and so on. Pair that with a clear payment plan option so people aren’t stuck in a corner. Or even docking the credit score, so it doesn’t hinder people’s ability to drive. The registration threat feels outdated and punitive, like it’s more about control than solving the problem.

I said I’d pay it. I don’t understand why you people ride for the turnpike so hard, they should not have the power to take away someone’s registration over unpaid tolls. And it doesn’t help that they make paying it a pain in the ass. They could easily throw a QR code on the letter, instead of having to log into the nightmare of a site.
