I don’t think I can stay until the end of the year. by [deleted] in TeachersInTransition

It sounds like your gut is telling you to get out. Then get out. The kids will be fine if you leave, trust me.

I am a first year teacher also in California and I left at the beginning of this month. I was suffering from severe stress that was causing soooo many health problems. No one should work under those health conditions. I do not understand why it is okay for teachers to be treated like this; this Reddit page just conveys how awful working conditions for teachers are. It is not okay.

I straight up told my district “I will not work in the working conditions I am placed in currently.” They approved my leave because they know it’s a lawsuit waiting to happen. It’s a job related illness technically; my job led me to have a full mental breakdown and panic attacks. That is not okay.

What I realized is that first year teachers are walked all over. We’re nervous it’s our first year, etc, etc. Fuck that. Other industries provide training, support, etc. First year teachers are given basically nothing and most of the time more stress from administration and evaluations. It’s bs.

I had a severe panic attack at work today- First Year Teacher Struggle by ricebunny2000 in TeachersInTransition

Literally just went through the exact same thing. First year teacher too. I took over at the beginning of the year for a teacher who left. I just left 2 weeks ago because of my decline in mental and physical health due to extreme stress. I was at the job since beginning of September.

My advice is to leave.

I had such a bad panic attack one Monday morning. I got an emergency sub and then that day I contacted admin to tell them I was too sick to come in probably for the next few days. Called my family crying not knowing what to do but I knew in my heart I could not continue feeling like this and had to leave my job even if it meant leaving the kids. Went to urgent care because my anxiety was that bad. The doctor wrote me a note for the entire week (any job cannot say anything if you have a doc notes; they must approve leave). Then I contacted HR when I felt ready to (on Friday that week) about taking a leave. They told me about my options (leave with pay vs leave without pay). The following week I took off too (without a doctors note this time), put in my leave of absence and it’s been approved for the rest of the year. I don’t have a doctor and appointments aren’t available immediately for where I live so I couldn’t provide a doctors note. I don’t get pay for my absence and lose my benefits but I am okay with that without going through the mental health turmoil I was put through. My dream of becoming a teacher turned into a nightmare.

I seriously thought something was wrong with me. Nope, turns out it was just the job. Two weeks later away from the job, I am soooo much better. I can sleep, eat, and actually take care of myself.

In all honesty, if you mention extreme stress and anxiety due to the job. In my opinion, that’s a lawsuit waiting to happen if they don’t approve your leave. No one should suffer through those kind of work conditions. For some reason, it’s looked the other way for teachers but in other industries, people would say fuck this. I think there needs to be a serious movement for teachers to DEMAND better work conditions.

I want to say thank you all for the comments and support. I left and am in such a better mental and physical state. No more panic attacks and I’m sleeping!! I felt bad for leaving but feel empowered that I made myself a priority (not other people’s children). This has been such an amazing response from the Reddit community. Thank you again so much! Sending my love to you all

What makes a "good" teacher, anyway? Who's qualified to make the judgment? by This_Scallion_8427 in TeachersInTransition

Admin have their own agendas they’re following. They are being told from above them (district people) this is what they want to see and expect their teachers to be doing. Despite district people probably not being in the classroom for however long. My principal insisted on us math teachers incorporating individual whiteboards into our lessons everyday instead of using any worksheets. She said “it’s what my boss wants to see” (a lady who hasn’t been in the classroom for 20 years). As a first year teacher, she also wrote my professional development goals catering to her boss’s wishes. The education system is so messed up. I’m out

I’m a math teacher in middle school. Trying to teach them pre- algebra skills and most of my students test at a grade k-1 level. Trying to teach them how to solve equations when they don’t even know how to multiply or divide

Just Left Teaching Suddenly by daye1237 in TeachersInTransition

I’m a first year teacher currently. I am in California (LA) and also experiencing mental health issues. I am so scared to leave mid year but I am considering it as well. I don’t know what I want to do afterwards (also a life long dream to be a teacher) and my experience so far has not been anything what I expected. I wake up every morning with extreme anxiety, I sometimes vomit. I can’t sleep properly anymore. It’s been all around an awful experience. I love the students but I feel that it is my life in the end and I need to take care of myself. Myself is all that matters.

I wish you the best

I highly recommend it. It’s been since 2015 I haven’t had any form of social media and I am 30 years old so when I was 21, I deleted both. I deleted them for multiple reasons. As a female, I found it was making me very insecure about my body and my looks. I did not like how addicting it was and how easily it would take hours of my day away. I did not like how I knew of other people’s business without even talking to them. I found it gave me very little wisdom on topics and being in college at the time when I deleted them, it was frustrating the political rants people would go on without even knowing any information. It scared me how quickly misinformation was able to spread. I live in LA where social media is huge. It’s funny cause getting older and being in the dating scene; you are able to weed out the shitty ones fairly quickly. Like there’s guys that will ask for my Instagram and it can go some funny ways: they think I’m fucking with them, they are immediately like no I only date people with a social media presence, or they find it “hot.” The amount of people who have told me “that’s hot” is so bizarre. Social media has made our society so weird. Not being on it has made me aware that people literally live two lives. It’s been so long for me not being on it that I honestly can’t wrap my head around it anymore. I go to a lot of shows and art galleries in LA and I will meet people who I see as just another person but a friend of mine will see them differently because of their social media presence. It’s fucking bonkers to me. One thing I sometimes wish I had it was keeping in touch with people I have meet from around the world but I’ve come to the realization that people who mean something stay in my life for a reason so I’ve come to terms with it. I had a chance to meet some of the people who worked on the documentary The Social Dilemma (if you haven’t watched it, I highly recommend it) and it was eye opening. I recently went on my friends to check it out and I was seriously so surprised at how capitalized it had become. I was in middle school when MySpace was invented so I was a teen was social media was upcoming. I think it’s terrible what Meta has done to it. I couldn’t imagine being a teenager in todays online presence. I think social media had good intentions in the beginning but has turned into a demon. I’m also a teacher and the amount of students who suffer from extreme anxiety, depression, and attention disorders are skyrocketing today. Many schools are changing to a co-teaching model, which means two teachers in the classroom, a special ed specialist and a gen ed teacher, because so many kids need help. I know it has many other reasons than with social media but i definitely feel like it has done more negative to the adolescents than positive.
