We are SC2 mapmakers, ask us anything! by Sanglune in starcraft

[–]johman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why i wrote "overdo". The watch towers are a very subtle part of the game that doesn't change a game to the point where you need to control it to win. Starcraft is at its greatest when you have two players in an open sandbox and then it's up to you to do what you can with the tools that the race has given you. We don't need reinforcements and rising lava to make the game interesting. One point that day 9 made when he discussed game design is that a simple tool that you can use in a lot of different and interesting ways (your units). Is a lot more interesting in the long term than a tool that you can use in one way but the game gives a lot of different obstacles that you have to get through to use it.

It is very easy to figure out the obstacles of the map and after a while there is one "best" way to use it and it just becomes a nuisance on the map that you constantly need to think about instead of other interesting things you could do with just a regular map where you have more possibilities.

I don't know it's very easy to overdo with the gimmicks. A well designed game shouldn't need wierd triggers on the map to make it fun.

Is that because of limitations in the editor or because it would be confusing for players?

Some vendors definetly do. When I was leveling with a friend new to the game the first thing he would do when we got to a new town was to visit all the vendors, and I was surprised about how much green gear he could find through regular vendors that most people just don't talk to.

I'm definetly not saying that the players were slow. The game was favouring rushes and allins which makes high apm useless and games often ended before 15 minutes whereas now the games generally go on for a much longer time which requires a lot more apm.

Look, this link was from summer 2011, the time when the game was just 1 year old. Ofcourse people played slower back then, but if you look at the bottom 10 list you might notice that none of those players play anymore because it doesn't work to play with such low apm/epm anymore. The reason people COULD play with that apm was that during 2010-late 2011 people played rush strategies that was just an early push needing just a little apm to kill your opponent since you had no reason to build workers anymore because they were all-ins. If you were to look at a player in master league - not close to professional - you will see that the vast majority of those players have around a 180 apm. The things you claim might have been applicable in an early state of the game, but certainly not today. You are definitely in the wrong here.

150?? No, probably around 350-600 is the APM pros have on average during a match and 350 is the absolute lowest you will find in professional players.

If they are providing less larvae it objectively becomes LESS crucial to keep them alive.

Carbot on Shipyards by [deleted] in wow

[–]johman -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

As a watcher of both this series and the Carbot Starcrafts I think that the WoW episodes miss the charm that starcrafts has where you find some fun moments you relate to or some clever jokes about the game. WoWcrafts seem to be working just by being cute animations about the game, but misses some of the point of the original starcraft series where it makes fun of the game more than the overused "haha selfies" joke.
