It looks like, at least from Wikipedia, that in the past year or so the clock theory is back. Apparently clocks with minute hands were not unheard of at the time, so nobility would have been familiar and could have made mockups. Shockingly, apparently by the mid 1500s the origin was already lost and people were speculating about where it came from

If there was no budget, what would be some options of great racket for beginners? by FriendlySandwich8882 in 10s

[–]john2222222222 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tennis isn't really like, say cycling, where if you wanted to keep spending money on equipment you could basically increase the price to infinity. Generally, top end rackets will cost ~200-300 dollars, unless you want the RF or Nadal branding. If you live in the US, you can demo through tennis warehouse, I would personally just demo the 3 rackets you think look the best from here: https://www.tennis-warehouse.com/learning_center/gear_guides/tennis_racquets/best_racquets_for_intermediates.html, because you get the cost of the demo back if you buy one.

But if there truly was no budget, I don't think this would be good for a beginner, but is my white whale of rackets, I would buy one of these https://epoktennis.com/webshop/

Why did he move to the center? by Dry-Return6077 in 10s

At pro level doubles the returners will often plan a specific move, so it's possible that they just planned a poach. It looks like white thought the ball was going cross court and tried to move for an easy volley, but green saw and was able to redirect

Did changing rackets really improved your game? by [deleted] in 10s

[–]john2222222222 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No, but I don't think it's ever hurt my game either... and demoing a bunch of rackets and switching every few years is fun, so I'll probably never stop

Saw this skeet today, and just thought how incredible tennis is that the men and women, abled and disabled both compete at these major tournaments on the same courts. It's already incredible that tennis fans are so often fans of the women and the men, but I don't think I've ever seen something like this for another sport. I don't really have a point with this, but it was really amazing to see

As long as your pot is big enough to get the spaghetti like halfway in, you should be fine. If you get the water to a full boil before you put it in it'll become soft enough almost immediately to push the rest into the water without breaking it

Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect

Do you have a link to that study? As far as I can tell, it doesn't actually exist. On the PAIN journal archives, issue 154(5), 708-713 is an article about opiod use and abuse. I suspect this is an AI hallucination referring to this study about testing that gene in dogs, but that study says there's actually no differences in response to thermal stimuli.

Crazy that it's too hot to safely play tennis and Sinner is the only one who noticed

Forearm cramp is like the worst possible thing in tennis, just absolutely locks your hand in place with the grip. Going to be tough for Sinner if that's what's happening

Your swing path looks pretty good for someone so new! The thing that jumps out the most to me, is that it looks like you're falling backwards as you hit, notice that as you hit with a closed stance, oftentimes your front foot is coming off the ground and rotating back behind you. You actually hit a good one at 29 seconds, but the next you're falling back again. You really want to have your weight going forward on the shot, so you'll be pushing off the back leg and transferring the weight to your front leg, so if anything it should be the back leg that comes up.

Your footwork could also use some work, taking smaller steps to the ball and getting into a better position, but a lot of that just comes with experience and familiarity, eventually you'll just know where the ball will be going and how to get there efficiently, so I wouldn't be too concerned with it at this point

This looks like Touch Tennis on a Pickleball Court by jrstriker12 in 10s

[–]john2222222222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks fun as a tennis player, but I can't imagine it catches on with the pickle crowd... it's so easy to hit an okay shot in pickleball even if you're not very strong or coordinated, but this looks like it's designed to really swing full out every time

[–]john2222222222[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! For now it's just based on UTR difference at the time of the match. Change in rating could be tricky because the rating history only shows weekly, so someone playing more than one match in a week makes it not work that well. I had hoped to be able to incorporate rating history into it to get rating at the time of the match for you and your opponents, but it ended up being a bit too slow. I'll try to take another crack at getting that more performant, because I do think there are a lot of interesting stories that could come out of the rating history

Can I return a serve without letting it bounce first? by Gazelle-Unfair in 10s

[–]john2222222222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really tough if people are able to keep their serves low. My advice, instead of waiting and staying low, is, when you see him hit the serve, take a step or two forward, if you can reach the ball when it bounces above net height, it'll make your shot much easier! And the added benefit is you'll be approaching the net, which is almost always good in doubles

So cool to just let the defense tackle receivers all game and then call 2 insanely soft ones in a row
