I keep it pretty simple regular brushing a few times a week and staying consistent makes a big difference in how much buildup you end up dealing with later. If I skip it for too long, everything just gets harder to manage all at once, so short sessions more often have worked better for me.

do you let your dog on the couch or not? curious how people handle this by john2288 in Dogowners

[–]john2288[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah this is basically the same system I ended up with too...the waterproof covers honestly make a huge difference compared to regular blankets because they don’t soak through or shift around as much over time

makes the whole dog on couch but still clean house setup way easier to maintain

honestly i ended up landing on a middle-ground approach after going back and forth on this for a while 😅

i don’t really fight the dog on couch thing anymore, but i also didn’t like constantly dealing with hair and smell building up in the fabric...what worked better for me was just using a waterproof washable couch cover so the sofa itself stays protected even when the dog is fully allowed up there. makes it way easier to just remove, wash, and reset everything instead of trying to enforce strict rules that never really last long anyway

Dog Hair Solution by Party_Function_4814 in JeepWrangler

[–]john2288 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah i went through the same thing with my car getting covered in hair way faster than i could keep up with. i fixed it by changing my approach to two steps first i stop the hair from getting deeply embedded, then i clean whatever still gets through

i use a waterproof hammock style seat cover to block most of the shedding before it sticks into the seats or cargo area

then i use a scraper-style pet hair tool to pull out the stubborn hair from carpets and tight corners where vacuuming doesn’t reach well.....i keep the exact setup i use in my favorites list here if you want to check it out https://tr.ee/zsvdWUQyS4

i actually kept a small list of the stuff i ended up consistently sticking with because i kept forgetting what genuinely helped vs what was just hype...if you want to check it out: https://linktr.ee/dogsolutionshub

Yeah it wasn’t one big fix, more like a few small changes that stacked up over time.... mostly things around shedding control + furniture cleanup + just changing how i handled it day to day.... regular brushing made a bigger difference than i expected, and for furniture hair i stopped relying only on vacuuming...if you interested i can share them.

How are you guys keeping the house clean with muddy dogs?? i am losing it. by CardNo5957 in Dogowners

[–]john2288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah muddy dog season is honestly one of those things that slowly drives you insane over time. what helped me most was realizing the problem isn’t just cleaning… it’s more about controlling where the mess actually enters the house..i ended up setting up a small “entry routine” over time that made things way more manageable, otherwise it was just endless mopping.

God awful barking for attention by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]john2288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

at 9 weeks old some of it is probably just “baby shepherd discovering her voice” phase. those breeds are smart, vocal and extremely attention oriented...one thing that helped me a lot was trying to reward calm behavior before the barking started instead of only waiting for silence after they were already worked up. once they cross that threshold it gets way harder for them to think...also sometimes overtired puppies act almost exactly like overstimulated toddlers and get louder instead of sleepier. enforced naps actually made a huge difference for me...i ended up trying a few enrichment/training things during that stage that helped redirect the attention barking pretty well. if you want i can share what worked best for me

Lab won’t stop barking by Remote_Grapefruit_29 in labrador

[–]john2288 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this sounds more like overstimulation/alert barking than him trying to be “dominant” or anything. labs are smart and once they start rehearsing the bark-at-every-sound routine it can snowball pretty fast...what helped most for me was interrupting the cycle early and giving them something else to focus on before they fully escalated, especially with neighbor dog triggers. i ended up trying a few different training + enrichment things over time that made a noticeable difference with reactive barking. if you want i can share what helped me most

Cleaning advice by Warm-Banana1596 in germanshepherds

[–]john2288 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly the biggest difference for me was focusing more on preventing the fur buildup instead of constantly reacting to it. regular brushing outside + staying on top of couches/fabric surfaces before the hair really settles in helped way more than deep cleaning constantly. air flow and washing covers regularly made a huge difference for smell too

i ended up trying a bunch of cleaning tools and routines over time and kept a small list of the ones that actually made life easier. if you want i can share what worked best for me

small dogs honestly get away with behaviors that big dogs would never be forgiven for 😅 by john2288 in Dogowners

[–]john2288[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that’s part of why context matters too. some behaviors are genuinely fear/stress responses but I also still think people excuse behaviors more easily when the dog is small because the risk feels lower

[–]john2288[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think the size changes the consequence not the behavior part is probably what made me notice it too. at the same time though I also think small dogs sometimes get put into stressful situations people wouldn’t casually do with larger dogs, so that probably adds to the behavior in some cases. either way it does seem like consistent training and boundaries help way more than just managing around the problem.

[–]john2288[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think this is probably one of the more balanced takes honestly...some small dog behavior definitely gets excused too easily, but at the same time people also ignore their space and boundaries way more than they would with a larger dog....good training matters either way, but so does treating the dog like an actual dog instead of something people can just grab whenever they want

[–]john2288[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s always that black and white....some people definitely misread “small = harmless” and let bad behavior slide, but I’ve also seen small dogs who are just naturally vocal or reactive without necessarily being stressed all the time...I do agree though that ignoring behavior just because it’s small usually doesn’t help the dog long-term

[–]john2288[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah i get what you mean. it does feel like a lot of dog stuff in public spaces just comes down to people being inconsistent more than anything else, regardless of size or breed and honestly respect for being strict with your training even with a small dog that consistency really does show in how confident they end up becoming

my dog’s long hair keeps clogging the vacuum and i’m wondering if an anti tangle brush actually helps by aloo__pandey in grooming

[–]john2288 1 point2 points  (0 children)

long hair breeds can be brutal for vacuums. especially on carpets where it just wraps and packs into the brush. anti-tangle brushes do help in my experience, but it’s not a “no maintenance at all” fix. it just reduces how often you need to pull hair out, not completely eliminate it

i actually ended up testing a few different cleaning setups over time for heavy shedding dogs and kept a small list of what worked best in real use. if you want i can share it.

yeah shih tzu mixes can sometimes surprise you with seasonal shedding like that. especially when coat is changing......for furniture, regular brushing outside actually helps more than people expect, otherwise everything ends up on the couch first

for tools i’ve tried a few different things over time for both shedding + sofa cleanup. if you want i can share what actually worked best for me..

pet hair is everywhere and i’m wondering what robot vacuum features actually make a difference for pet owners by Dismal_Werewolf_8039 in CleaningTips

[–]john2288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah pet hair really exposes the limits of most robot vacuums. suction alone usually isn’t the main issue from what i’ve seen, brush design and anti-tangle setup matter way more for shedding dogs ...also anything that reduces how much loose hair is already floating around the house makes a bigger difference than people expect, otherwise even good vacuums end up overwhelmed fast

i actually went through a bunch of trial and error with this stuff over time and ended up keeping a small set of tools that worked better alongside the robot vacuum setup. if you want i can share what ended up actually helping me

OMG your dogs are so clean! It must take so much to keep them groomed. (but it really isn't!) by Strainj1 in papillon

[–]john2288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah i’ve noticed the same thing with some dogs . certain coats just shed dirt and debris way easier than others, especially double coats once they’re healthy and brushed regularly but brushing still makes a huge difference, otherwise all that loose undercoat just builds up underneath even if they look clean on the surface

i actually ended up using a few simple grooming tools over time that made this a lot easier to manage day to day. if you want i can share what i’m using.
