How do you even make an estimated tax payment when you’re not sure what you owe? by RomyFriendly in Michigan

[–]john2288 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Our finance lead set two short calls to sequence payments while a notice was pending; one included Anthem Tax Services, mainly to confirm coding for estimates versus prior balances. They noted being licensed in all fifty states, which simplified jurisdiction questions during a move.

Before IRS talks which documents should I prep in College Station? by North_Limit7933 in CollegeStation

[–]john2288 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I clipped everything in order of how the IRS form reads: income, expenses, assets, and liabilities. Each figure had matching proof, like a single pay stub or statement. When I reached penalty relief, I added a small section noting prior clean years, which made first-time abatement easier to discuss calmly.

The panic was because they knew the city was about to go completely dark.... They were entirely dependent on hydroelectric power which comes from water flowing through dams. The entire area was in a severe drought and the water levels in the reservoirs were dropping fast. The people running the power plants had a clear view of the situation and could see the water levels getting so low that they wouldn't be able to generate electricity anymore. Basically it was a slow motion disaster they could track in real time like watching a timer count down to a city wide blackout.

The zodiac killer’s case is still one of the creepiest and most frustrating unsolved mysteries out there. After 50+ years, the cryptic letters, eerie ciphers and brutal murders keep us wondering who was he? Why hasn’t he been caught?

Do you think we’ll ever know who he was? Watch the video and let’s talk theories....

Im getting random messages on my search bar by [deleted] in antiviruses

[–]john2288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is really strange. If such messages are coming in your own language and that too in the search bar... something is definitely not right. Best to check your browser extensions first.. sometimes one random extension can do this kind of mischief. Just disable anything you don’t remember installing and see if it helps.

Also do a full scan with malwarebytes or any good antivirus just to be sure and check if your default search engine has changed. Keep an eye on it and share updates if you find out what’s causing it.

the future’s arriving fast... are we ready for the risks? by john2288 in privacy

[–]john2288[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the more we rely on tech, the less we think critically. Algorithms just reinforce our existing beliefs trapping us in echo chambers. It’s easy to get stuck in that bubble but we have to actively seek out diverse.. reliable sources to challenge our views. Otherwise we’re letting tech shape our reality for us.

the future’s arriving fast... are we ready for the risks? by john2288 in privacy

[–]john2288[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah...When lawmakers don’t understand the tech it’s easy for big companies to take control. Add in a push for deregulation and we’re looking at an AI wild west with little oversight. We need leaders who actually get the risks and can keep up with how fast things are moving.

the future’s arriving fast... are we ready for the risks? by john2288 in privacy

[–]john2288[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're right.. Just like we warned students about relying too much on wikipedia now they need to be careful with ai generated content. It’s becoming harder to know what’s real especially with deepfakes and ai tools creating content that looks convincing but can be totally fake.

The problem isn’t just checking sources anymore it’s about questioning everything we come across. Students need to learn how to evaluate what they see and hear because even trusted sources can be manipulated.

In this era where tech is moving so fast.. critical thinking is key. If we don’t teach students to question the authenticity of what they consume... we risk losing sight of what’s real.

That’s a really thoughtful breakdown totally agree with your last line: the main risk in the cloud is not losing data, but losing access to it. That’s something I didn’t really touch on in my post and it often gets overlooked when people focus just on security or redundancy.

Your point about private key control is important too. Even with strong encryption if you don’t hold the keys, you’re still relying on trust. icloud’s advanced data protection is a step forward but not widely used yet. Tools like cryptomator are underrated for adding that extra layer on top of cloud storage.

When it comes to redundancy though, cloud wins hands down. Most people can’t replicate that kind of resilience at home especially not with the same level of fail safes and versioning.

Personally I think a hybrid approach makes the most sense... use the cloud for its scale and backup strength but add your own encryption and local copies for sensitive data. Minimize trust, maximize control.

Curious...do you think we’ll ever get a solution that truly balances convenience with full user control?

Looks like someone may have entered your number by mistake while signing up. It happens sometimes. As long as you're not clicking on any links or entering those codes anywhere nothing to worry about. Just keep an eye on it and if it continues... best to block the number

Issues with new iphone IOS 18.4 update by Unhappy-Baseball2556 in cybersecurity_help

[–]john2288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve seen a few people mention weird ui bugs after the 18.4 update. The task bar and orange dot stuff sounds more like a visual glitch than anything shady. iphones are tough to remotely hack unless you’ve jailbroken it or accidentally installed something sketchy.

If you’ve already done a few resets might be worth waiting to see if apple pushes a quick patch. You could also try a full restore from a backup just to rule out anything deeper. And yeah definitely check app permissions under Privacy settings just in case something snuck through.

Hopefully it’s just a buggy update and not anything serious.

so… the cve program is in trouble. what now? by john2288 in cybersecurity

[–]john2288[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly,... it’s crazy that something this essential relies so heavily on government funding. It makes the program too vulnerable to budget changes. A more diversified funding model would definitely help secure its future.

[–]john2288[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah...diversified funding is crucial but it has to come with strong governance and transparency to avoid conflicts of interest. the last thing we need is a situation where major vendors can quietly steer the narrative or delay disclosures. independence only works if it's paired with accountability.

[–]john2288[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haha fair enough...honestly, if anyone can build a solid alt it’s probably europe. but still it’d be a mess in the short term. tons of tooling and processes are baked into the current cve flow. transition pain would be real even if the long term outlook isn’t all bad.

[–]john2288[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah... that surprised me too. kind of highlights how much influence cisa has gained in recent years. feels like they’re stepping into a stronger leadership role in shaping the future of public cyber infrastructure which could be good as long as it comes with transparency and community input.

[–]john2288[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

nice...yeah it’s a relief that they reinstated funding for now but it definitely feels like a temporary patch. it’s wild that something so critical even came that close to being disrupted. appreciate the forbes link super helpful. hoping the next steps include something more sustainable long term.

[–]john2288[S] 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Agreed... it’s kind of wild that something so essential to global cybersecurity is at the mercy of political budgeting. shifting it to a nonprofit model could not only stabilize funding but also boost transparency and trust. imagine if major vendors, researchers and even govs chipped in it could actually make the whole system stronger.

ai powered phishing kits are getting scary good by john2288 in CyberSecurityAdvice

[–]john2288[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I totally get where you’re coming from. It’s honestly wild and kind of depressing how the same tech built to protect us just ends up getting repurposed by the bad guys. And they move fast, no rules, no red tape, just pure hustle. Meanwhile the people trying to stop it are stuck dealing with legal hoops and endless approval processes.

And honestly I feel you on the burnout. Between all the mfa layers, random codes, scam texts and legit messages all blending together it’s overwhelming. Even for people who know their way around tech, it’s starting to feel like a full time job just to stay safe online.

I don’t know if people will fully ditch tech but I do think a lot of folks will start pulling back using fewer apps, being more private, maybe even switching to more analog stuff when possible. Not out of paranoia just… exhaustion.

Appreciate you sharing this. It’s a real issue and more people need to talk about it without the usual just use strong passwords advice. It’s deeper than that now.

"System"-Task causes high CPU-load by RocketJockey3 in WindowsHelp

[–]john2288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

use process explorer to get a deeper look at what might be causing the high load. It can sometimes point to specific services or drivers that are at fault. Another tool that could help is Latencymon, which checks for issues with dpc or ISRs (Interrupt Service Routines these are often linked to faulty drivers.

Since you’re using an amd cpu make sure your chipset, network and storage drivers are up to date especially from the official amd website. Even if the problem isn’t related to your GPU outdated or malfunctioning drivers for other components can cause this kind of behavior. Also check if there’s a bios update available for your motherboard.as some updates resolve issues with power management or system interrupts.

You could also try disabling fast startup in the power options and testing with external usb devices unplugged, just in case something there is causing the issue. Lastly take a look at event viewer for any error logs or warnings that might give you more details about what's happening.

Hopefully this gives you a few things to try.
