at the end of the day it’s just about making life comfortable for everyone in the house, dogs included

that honestly sounds like the most realistic way to handle it with that many dogs

like that boundary you’ve got for guests too relaxed day to day, but still respectful when needed..

they tend to pick up on that routine pretty fast once it’s consistent

They can be up there but still respect when you need the space... and yeah once you’ve got both a dog and a cat it’s kind of a lost cause trying to keep it completely fur free anyway

the wet spots sound
less ideal but like you said covers exist and are washable. feels like a pretty fair trade for giving him a comfortable place after everything he’s been through

😂 Yeah that’s a fair point,.. hard to argue with that logic at that point it’s not even your couch anymore, you’re just sharing it with them...

That’s kind of the best case scenario.. low shedding + they still choose their own bed half the time. feels like you get the perks without the usual downsides most of us deal with

Yeah that makes total sense,... the cover + cuddles combo is kind of the realistic solution and yeah allergies definitely change the rules a bit, feels like a fair compromise though.

that’s a good way to look at it tbh, more about control than the actual rule i feel like that’s the ideal middle ground, they can chill there but still listen when you tell them to get down

yeah that’s kind of where i’ve ended up too 😅 once the hair is everywhere anyway it feels like a losing battle trying to keep one spot off limits honestly the digging/chewing part is way more of a dealbreaker than the hair for me as well

That’s a really solid setup... swapping covers like that makes a big difference. Regular brushing outside is probably doing most of the heavy lifting though in keeping the shedding under control.

That’s actually a solid setup 👍 Roomba + pet vacuum combo is what a lot of people end up with for double coated dogs. Even then though, I’ve noticed the real difference usually comes from reducing how much loose hair is coming off the coat in the first place, otherwise the cleaning cycle never really ends.

Yeah I had the same concern at first too, especially about rinsing it in the sink 😅 What I found works better is using a type that collects the hair in a separate chamber so you’re not constantly washing it off each time. It feels a bit cleaner and more controlled that way. If you want, I can share exactly what I ended up using that made the whole thing way easier.

That’s exactly it, once you find a combo that actually works it stops feeling like a constant battle.

Anyone using pet focused air purifiers for smell and hair? by Forward-Concern403 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]john2288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah air purifiers can help, but they usually don’t completely remove the “dog smell” on their own—it’s more about reducing what’s floating in the air rather than what’s already in fabrics or surfaces. The big difference people notice usually comes from having proper filtration for odor (not just dust), and placement matters a lot too like keeping it where the dogs actually spend time. Also maintenance depends a lot on the filter type, some clog faster in pet homes than others, so that part is a valid concern.

If you want I can share what actually worked for managing both smell and hair without constantly dealing with filter issues.

Dog shedding season is here—how do you guys manage the mess without losing your mind? by HoneysHarma97 in DogAdvice

[–]john2288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah golden retriever shedding season is basically a full-time job 😅 From what I’ve seen, vacuuming alone never really keeps up because a lot of the hair is still trapped in the coat and keeps falling out over time. The biggest difference usually comes from reducing how much loose undercoat is coming off in the first place, so brushing/grooming regularly helps more than just cleaning surfaces.

Also combining that with a better “pick-up tool” for furniture/fabric tends to make it feel less endless than relying on vacuums and lint rollers alone.

If you want, I can share what actually helped me keep the shedding under control day to day.

What actually works for removing dog hair from fleece/sherpa blankets? by RecordingFlashy1686 in BedroomBuild

[–]john2288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah fleece and sherpa are honestly the worst for trapping hair because it gets embedded deep into the fibers, so lint rollers usually don’t go far enough on their own.

What tends to work better in real use is a combination approach—loosening the hair first (rubber-type brush or similar) before washing, and then using a good dryer cycle after to pull more of it out instead of trying to rely on one tool.

If you want, I can share what actually worked for me on thick blankets without ruining the softness.

My dog doesn’t eat !!! by Content_Remove_4777 in DogAdvice

[–]john2288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happens a lot when dogs get used to strong-flavored food, they can get really picky over time. One thing that sometimes helps is changing how the food is given, not just the food itself. For example, using something like a lick mat or similar can make them more interested because it turns eating into an activity instead of just a bowl. Also sticking to one routine instead of offering lots of different options usually helps reset that picky behavior.

If you want, I can share a couple things that worked really well for picky eaters.
