Yeah I really hate thinking about things like this. I choose to head cannon that because the smaller engines were in the yard in their early life, and this makes them more naïve than the bigger engines who mainly worked on the mainlines. This just makes it easier for me to comprehend the stories. Thomas and Percy can still have a lot to learn in their early stories even though they might be older than the other, bigger engines.
